You know, this won't be a series, but it will be a book. However, the storyline from this video to now has COMPLETELY changed into an original drawing style and story. The story is called Wild Fang Solaurea, and takes place in Canada and the US.

That's what I was wondering.

People think that recoloring an existing character can turn it into an "original" character. But the fact of the matter is, this "Solaurea" is just a green version of Weed. Not original at all.

I understand that she may look like that, but as an adult, she differs from Weed. I'm thinking of changing her as a younger dog, but as I said earlier, she differs from Weed in her storyline and personalitywise.

She doesn't look like an adult to me. You are aware that young dogs have different physical traits from older dogs? Even in GDW, the adult Gin looked totally different from the young Weed. His head was smaller, his eyes more narrow to suggest age and a more serious demeanor and he was larger than the other dogs in the series. Yet he and Weed still looked related. But in all of these aspects, Solaurea and Weed are exactly the same. Even their markings are exactly the same, just a different color.

Not that I am trying to patronize you here. But you have to look at things truthfully. From a character design perspective, Solaurea is just a green Weed thrust into a different storyline. She is still the main character of her story, she has the same proportions and traits as Weed does, and she is unexplainably an odd color for a dog (dogs can sometimes appear to be a shade of blue in real life, but never green).

As a character designer myself, I am just trying to draw your attention to that.

A personality alone does not make a character. If she has a different personality, she should, by nature, appear differently. The anime style is particularly well known for its wide variety of eye shapes and sizes to depict personality. Serious characters have narrow eyes. Sincere characters have larger, rounder ones. With a whole mess of them in between.

Which only brings me back to my original point that re-coloring screencaptures is NOT a means of creating original characters.

I simply see these recolors A LOT and, being a character designer whom actually spends days upon days figuring out exactly how her characters are going to look, act, and feel from the point of view of the audience, I find it rather annoying. It's technically art theft, really, stealing someone else's character and recoloring it only to claim it. And it's so popular on top of that.

I simply do not agree with it, different personality or not.

So I find it difficult to believe that this character is "old" or has changed at all since this movie was made. In that span of time, you could've made plenty of drawings for a nice video. ;3

I'd really be nice to see you flex your talent a little more by showing some more originality in your works, particularly in terms of character appearance and design. I do feel like Solaurea could be an excellent, individualized character... if she didn't look quite so much like Weed in terms of markings and proportions.

But, practice makes perfect. I just like to encourage originality wherever I see a lack of it. ;3

I use the brush tool on photoshop, and set it to color. I then make the color green, and then I recolor it.
