My bt is 7 and 1/2. Ever since we got her i have tried hand stripping her. But she always bites me, even though she is in full blow and the fur is lose and dead, she will always turn round and nip. Never hard, she's the best dog. But she grumbles and mouths you. Is there any way i can stop this behavior? When we sent her to the groomers they got the clippers and shaved her fur. Ik you are not supposed to cut a borders fur so i wont be taking her back there!
Lol, what a patient dog, we could never get ours to sit through it! We just shave him instead, looks just as handsome, but not exactly what they look for if your wanting to win crufts :)
To be fair this is probably the best "how to" BT stripping video on you tube, we keep out BT pretty much stripped all year, he's a blue so when he casts on the house it's very obvious, my mother says the stomach hair should be cut rated than stripped ? but i can't find a solid answer to that one. He's never that keen though, we just give him a bone though and that keeps him distracted long enough...
@zeeet Border Terriers have a double coat which requires stripping the top coat out when overgrown, the hair is dead of no use so should never hurt when plucking unless it has a poor example of a coat which is then maybe best to be clipped instead & yes they do shed a lot.
@srborders I've done some reading and people everywhere are recommending the BTs for allergy sufferers, since "they almost don't shed". Is that false then?
@srborders But only seasonly, right? I just know it's a dog recommended for allergy sufferers.. This has to come from somewhere. You have to pluck the coat so I would think it's not like they drop fur all over the place..
@Clayman93 Stripping minimizes it for a bit but not for long when the top coat starts coming back in, you are more than welcome to join "Border Terrier World.co.uk" which is a forum dedicated to the Border Terrier, members with years of experience are always happy to help with any info regarding the Breed.
This is great - and reassuring that I'm doing the right thing. i've tried using various knives but find it easier to do it by hand. Just out of interest, what is that knife you're using on the legs at the end?
Hi it is a ‘Hauptner’ blunt stripping knife but used purely only to remove excess undercoat after a strip as Mitch has a very thick undercoat, anyone using a knife for this purpose will need to ensure they are light-handed with it as otherwise they could scratch the dogs skin :)
I love seeing people who are truly dedicated to their wirey breeds. I have a parson russell terrier and a standard wire haired dachshund and I hand strip both of them. I wish to be as great and fast as you some day!
wow he's putting up with that well , ours tells us when she's had enough !!!!

I have a question:
How do you know when its time to strip a Border Terrier's coat?
Screamqueenrocker 2 weeks ago
This is excellent- I will have to do mine in a couple of months for the first time - I just hope she will be patient. :)

I have to strip my BT in stages. He does not like it, even though I try and do it carefully.

Thank you everyone, it takes just under 2 hrs for a full strip, he's so good as his Breeder who strips him had him well used to it from being a pup.

This looks amazing, such a transformation. How lucky that you have a well behaved, patient dog.
How long did it take in real time?
I am going to be hand stripping two border terriers tomorrow, so fingers crossed they will be as good.
Thanks so much for posting your video and look forward to maybe one with instructions as I would love to know what you are doing.
