@RichardElden Its a shame because although Brett was a classically trained actor he did use method acting. Principally in his role as sherlock holmes. He literally became Holmes and it took a strain on his health. I think it was more his 'style' that marked him out as belonging to an earlier time. As I say his looks and intonation belong proper to melodrama, where they have their greatest effect, but unfortunately that particular genre had gone out of fashion by his time.
I only revisited this page to watch Jeremy Bretts amazing response to the picture. The blind terror and panic felt whilst trying to grope towards the trusted face of the beloved, only to be greeted with the remorseless eyes of a murderer in the once loved face is brilliantly conveyed. It is pure melodrama, the word has been used as a perjorative but for sheer emotional power the form can be very affecting. I think if the Victorians had seen Brett they would have put him up there with Irving.
Black out, Dorian's starting to exhibit signs of debauchery, oh next scene, he's already the most depraved man alive. Totally cut out the most important part of the book why don't you.
@JuanMacready ...LOL...how old are you??? 12?...in the middle of puberty I presume as you bitch around like that and admire a childish boy like Firth xD
@JuanMacready xD ok first of all Jeremy Brett was not homosexual. He was bisexual...a slight difference! Anyway Firth does not really look his age, does he?
and that's not the point. I don't really care if you wet your pants over Firth or not but you shoud stop bitching around here. I don't insult you precious Firth either do I?

@Dratini999 Yes you did. Anyway I guess Peter looked young because he didn't suck his way through 60 cancer sticks a day like the bipolar mental case Brett.
@JuanMacready AGAIN you chose to insult Jeremy Brett. you seem to have no respect at all. Bipolar disorder is a tragic illness and you can hardly insult him for it.
@JuanMacready You are utterly offensive in your remarks about the deceased Mr. Brett. A most troubling interjection into the comment section especially as he's done a most remarkably good show of Basil in this film.
ok, it did seem a bit of a overreaction with "KNEEL, DORIAN!" and "AAUUURGHHH!!!" but I can't help but be a little heartbroken at how Basil dies with his arm(s) around Dorian :(
I wonder when he said that Allen is a scientist and made experiments Was he referring to Experiments with electricity and other things on human cadavers It was a big trade to bring in human cadavers those days to medical schools Lots of money in it
its been like, an hour and im still laffing from the killing scene!!
AND WHEN DORIAN STARTS TO UNBUTTON HIS COAT/JACKET/WATEVER THAT WAS I WAS FREAKIN' I thought he was unbuttoning his pants!!!!! Is it sick that this turns me on!!?!??
That was the thing I've always thought wile reading.. I guess Dorianseduced him and later on blackmailed him.^^ (And in that time, being exposed for men was like a deathstab in society)
If I remember the book, didn't Dorian's face in the picture get worse and worse? So far, we've had no indication that his face has progressively become more hideous in the portrait.
i don't like the killing scene.. and in the book it's supposed that Dorian stabs him while he's sitting on the table and he remains that way until the chemist gets rid of the body...
(Couldn't help laughing when the curtain hit Dorian's lamp at 5:50)
Nuuu the acting killed me but I truly didn't see that coming (as I haven't finished reading the novel yet) but this is a nice portrayal by BBC :). I can't wait for the new one featuring Colin Firth as Lord Henry and Ben Barnes as Dorian. Thanks for posting!
I think it's unfair for you to make personal insults about me when one was simply making observations about the difference between the two versioins of the film referred to. I am well aware that the book was the ultimate origonal as I've read it from cover to cover - I was meaning the origonal film version.

@Dratini999 Childish boy? He was a 22-year-old man, and far better than the ugly overacting homosexual NUTTER Jeremy Brett.

im sorry, but the killing scene was kind of cheesy. they could have done a better job if they had taken a few more minutes to draw out the scene. =p

Damn, the moment Dorian starts unbuttoning that jacket...
I don't think the words "You are scientific" and "You have made experiments" have ever sounded so exquisitely suggestive.

No duh they seem gay. The story was made to be in a way homosexual like, and the author himself was to the men rather than to the women.

The BBC skipped the parts with Sybll's brother & didn't make it clear that time had passed.

For those that read the book, Sybll's brother will make an appearance later in the movie (though in a slightly different way).

I love the scene where Basil is screaming when he sees the picture.

The homo-eroticism in this production is very stylishly done; very bold of the BBC considering this was 1976.

The Alan Campbell in this version is much nicer than the one in the origonal; the one in the origonal refused to even sit down!
