When i think about how good Paganini and Liszt really were, theres two trains of thought. One is that they're playing abilities were over-rated and the other is that they truly were the phenomenal legends of music.
WHAT?? how can you say that their playing abilities were overrated? have you seen their scores? their music demands nothing less than inhuman virtuosity, and their playing abilities are OVERRATED?!
dude he wasn't saying he thought they were over-rated was just saying that there's largely two ways to look at it. I personally think they were as good as the legends go, especially liszt and I'm not even a pianist
yes, i see what you mean. i spoke too soon. but yes, there are people out there who think that they're overrated. at this point, what with godowsky and sorabji having taken the pedestals of difficulty; i can see why. but they shouldn't be, because without liszt and paganini music wouldn't have evolved the way it did.
truth. Anyways, I love this vid. I mean, we can always hold Paganini and Liszt up on pedestals, as for the most part we are probably right to do so. I just find films or documentaries like this exciting, where titanic performers of our age do "impersonations". I mean, as long as they are historically accurate, it can almost give an insight into the lives of the legends
or more to the point goobleglob, we'll never know cos there are no recordings... i imagine due to paganini's works being played by many violinists today that by today's standards he MAY not seem so extraordinary as at the time.
The fact that many of the violinists of today that you refer to wouldn't even exist without Paganini says enough about him and his "overrated playing ability".
no, there aren't any recordings, but there are tons of favourable reviews and criticisms about their playing; by the best scholars of the time, even. they made music what it is today.
So, which lost unfortunate soul disliked this???

I think that Kremer's weirdness perfectly suites Paganini's weirdness as we've heard from tales about him.

inesef , Have you seen Kinski's version of Paganini? This one is so mellow by comparison.

Кремер, конечно образ Паганини показал просто неподражаемо. А дальше не будет музыки? Блин, зачем такое произведение резать и давать всего лиш кусок?
