only people that is stubborn and crazy enough to work in this depressing profession should choose architecture. like me. so just do it and enjoy life. :)
Unless youre a doctor or porn star, every job sucks for wages just now. Also I'm fucking loving uni. Not going to lie, you WILL hate it if you don't have a strong passion for architecture. But if you're retarded enough to study it just cause you had a slight interest in buildings, then you're stupid and kind of deserve to hate your job... But for all you out there that truly enjoy the subject, don't let this video put you off. If you have the passion then you'll be a great architect .
I'm an architecture student now and tbh, yeah it's extremely stressful most of the times and you get shitted on by professors during crits often times too but in the end I'm still god damn proud of my work when I'm finished. It's really a profession that people should pursue if they are 100% passionate about it.IArch isn't for everyone, lol half of my studio dropped out in 2 years. ;o
I think that if you're studying architecture, you definitely shouldn't be doing it for the money or for the guarantee of an immediate job. Only study architecture if that is what you are 100% passionate about and willing to dedicate your life to the next several years...
This movie is so skeptical. 99,5% of architects dont really design amazing buildings etc. But the famous starchitects don't really work alone either. With big projects there might be 5 or more architects in a team along with lots of engineers, designers and all sort of people. Some architects might want to do research, some teach. If you are good enough and work hard for the 7 years of your course, you will get some sort of job, unless the economy dies. But if the economy dies, all jobs will die
Well look on the bright side: according to this video, at least some architects are at least good at insulting aspiring architects and making sure they don't want to join the profession.
@Mozartmostly, no i dont speak as anything. i never said it is something automatically that an architect gets a job right away, obviously the person has to find one... im not stupid, to start with 30-40 a year isnt bad.. and why u asking my age? im old enough.. i am majoring in architecture.. my first year, but im a junior. yea its obviously hard. no major is easy. u dont become a doctor in 2 days. it takes 6-8 years. same with lawyer.

But seriously, this is kinda exaggerating. Architects start off $30,000-40,000 a year. So if your single it's good. Teachers make that much. And you can also start by making houses. That's an easy and quick way to pump up your portfolio and experience. And location matters a lot.
@icynezz you speak as if architect students are garanteed a job worth 30,000-40,000 a year in the field. They have to find one and earn one. Nothing is giving just becaue you went to school. You are naive. You are the girl in this video. How old are you ? Not to be mean, sorry if I offend in advance. peace my friend.

LOOOOOLLLL!!!! So true. I know that people may think that this video is an exageration but it truly is not. I graduated a year ago with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and everything this video says is true. Everything he said is true except that in California there are 9 licensing exams instead of 7. I laughed really hard... and then I almost cried.
LOL Architects always have wet dream Ideas that are nearly impossible to actually implement. Oh well, someone has to try so don't take this to heart, be an architect if thats what you want. Green design is not a waste at all wtf are you talking about?
@rvinvideo If you honest and truly want to be an architect, just stick in there. It's a tough program, but it's worth it if you're going to be doing something you enjoy. Expect long hours in the studio, all nighters, and working to the last minute to get things done. Then having to present having not had any sleep in over 50 hours.
There's a book called "Time Management for Architect Students." Read it before you don't have any time to.
'at least they knew what job they were getting into' - what, thievery?! doubt freshmen finance majors(or any other college freshmen) had a clue about the real world after college, but they did it because they heard that's where the money is, so from day 1 that's the goal - get the most money regardless of the means. what they don't get is if you milk the cows without feeding them, they die & eventually so will you. if it weren't for arch, etc, we'd all still be living in caves, but traders...
@NotYourNumberSix aren't we going back to the cave? we now try to design a super sustainable green building which use a recycle material. It sound like cave to me which I do like to live in. ^_^
'traders of nothing make millions' - because they can! i think it's outrageous too that the very people putting us in a depression are completely unaffected but at least they knew what job they were getting into.
hey it's satire ... architects poking fun at themselves. there are currently 180,000 unemployed, but, design schools keep cranking them out?! call this a p.s.a. to let everyone else know it's not the glamourous life you might have thought, (not unlike that of airline pilots today) underpaid & overworked, but most do it because they love the job regardless of the underappreciation & couldn't dream of doing anything else. the bigger question is why traders of nothing make millions.
boo-hoo, poor old tortured repressed genius artistic architects. why on earth would anyone not research what a job is like before enroling on a lengthy course?
"... they will make you change a single wall's location 20 times by 2 inches ... " only to approve what you originally designed (after 18 months min. of pure torturous life & death deliberations) ... righteous!
This is right on. My brother got his master in arch, then worked for various firms doing the grunt shit and being treated like a secretary and paid like a janitor. He's now working at a retail store and owes 90k+ in loans for a worthless degree.

Oohhh gosh what an encouraging video for the future architects!!!!!!Jesus I'm in first year of architecture and this kinda frickin me out!!! :O hihihihihi..... Sould I change my mind perhaps and study sth else??? _never_
@tgold1968 well, I think I will stay, because I dont use to live my dreams..I know things gonna be hard but i am willing to try!(at least I am way smarter than the cartoon girl that lives in a utopia:D)
@jebus733 "I need to do some stair sections and contemplate the best way to kill myself" (Stair sections are very tedious and not really a creative design phase of architecture, thus he wants to kill himself! lol)
I've been practicing architecture for 26 years and this is by far the most hilarious thing I have ever seen online... Exaggerated yes, but the script was obviously written by people in our profession because all the things the guys says are SO spot on... LOVED it and it made me laugh so hard I cried... Hang in there, architects!
@2Garyable well go to univerisity its fun and you will get a lot of knowledge and experience, but after school is over, you won't be at the top so you have to make your way to the top good luck
@2Garyable Just follow your heart and do whatever you think is good for you. Do not listen to anyone on your way, because it's your and only your way :)
This is dead balls on accurate and describes my entire 20 year career as an Architect. Thanks, it's nice to hear someone else say it, I'm so tired of telling this story to me friends and family.
This is so true! People just don't understand when we tell them they can't do stuff! We went to school and learnt, cried, sweated and lost a whole boatload of sleep to make less than a high school drop out!
So Architects are being butt-fucked by clients\teachers\society not only in my Cunt-ry. How unexpected! Anyway, the animation is not perfect, so clearly this was made by an architect trying to go the Pixar\CG way.
I can't wait for the girl to join the architecture line! I'd love to see her reaction then... Have fun~ 'till then I still have more CAD drawings to do, sigh~ =(
"Your designs will be stupid, your professors will tell you as much and make you cry during your reviews for being a complete and total idiot" haha so true
ironically as i listened and agreed to that i was drawing stair sections. However I do not wish to killy myself...the engineer on the other hand. His days are fucking numbered!!!!
This is beyond hilarious! I am currently working on a masters in interior architecture and I can truly relate to this video. Even our field has to deal with similar problems as architects. I'm not saying that it will be like this for everyone, but the current situation for most right now is to feel this way. Thank you for the stress relief laugh. Gotta head back to my floor plans now.
well...... at least the girl would be happier than the dude......... she has a dream...... although she's stupid....... "cause brad pitt said so.." xD but hey, if u like something alot.... it might be worthit to go through all of that.....beats sitting behind a desk contemplating about killing themselves.....

Wow. I wanted to be an architect, if only to make the ordinary offices and apartments and normal life look pure, simple, clean or organic,
to define the very fabric of the environment around us to the needs of society,

structure by structure, brick by brick, even if it gets me nowhere.
Now I don't. This stiff animation scares me shitless.

So funny! What about becoming a contractor or builder? They build houses and earn more money perhaps....
apriltime2008 1 year ago
@apriltime2008 Building houses? Where is there demand? Financing for home owners? Not here in the U.S.

Architect and Doctor playing golf:
Architect: I don't get it. Why do you guys make so much money?
Doctor: We go to school for years longer than most people.
A: So do we.
D: We have to intern for years, working long hours and at low wages.
A: So do we.
D: We have to study long hours and pass these ridiculous exams to get licensed.
A: So do we.
D: Well, when we make mistakes people die.
A: Well yeah ONE AT A TIME!

@dnha14 I don't understand the last line that the architect says. Can somebody explain it to me please?
jebus733 10 months ago
@jebus733 "I need to do some stair sections and contemplate the best way to kill myself" (Stair sections are very tedious and not really a creative design phase of architecture, thus he wants to kill himself! lol)
scotty3670131 9 months ago
@jebus733 If a doctor screws up, he might kill one person. If an architect screws up, he can kill many people.

Anyway, the animation is not perfect, so clearly this was made by an architect trying to go the Pixar\CG way.

ironically as i listened and agreed to that i was drawing stair sections.
