  • just use a machine with some more ram and probably a lil bit better cpu and install vmware ESXi ;)

  • Are you making money with this?

  • I see lots of room for consolidation, but that's just me. I'm big on efficiency, neatness, and ease of use.

  • what about power consumption?

  • nice and clean home rack system

  • the picture @ 0:48 suggest you leave your server's case open. I would recommend not doing that. Funny story - I used to leave my computer case open all the time, our computer was in a room with an open fire, our chimney fell down in an earthquake and tons of dust came down and absolutely covered every corner and surface in and on my computer lol

  • @TimeLord75 Cause that happens all the time.

  • I have the same dell at 0:09, I love it and it still works. :D

  • Why are there so many fool commenting here about heat? And that one guy with the water cooling idea... Just wow...

People need to understand these are servers, they are not game rigs plying crysis2 all day.

    Good video btw:)

  • BTW, an enclosed computer is ONLY a bad idea without an exhaust outlet and a fan forcing the air out of the enclosure. I personally for years OC'ed my rigs and kept them inside a closed desk cabinet with a exhaust fan and had excellent temps for years and years. NO EXHAUST outlet is BAD

  • I say he did a fantastic job, old gear works for him apparently. I on the other hand are going to build a specific Server for movies with Windows 2008 R2 for my home. I can use my old rig P4 with 2 gigs of dram and multiple sized drives to serve movies. But I prefer to build a I7 rig with gigs of dram3 to match my gaming rig I built a few months ago. I am in server class atm and will host a video when completed....

  • I think that the temperature is hot when the 'ikea-fans' are working. You should have an airflow problem, cuz you're pushing air in, but it can't get out xD

Why don't you flip 1 fan over, so it has a nice airflow, i think that'll reduce the temperature.

  • @wesiem1993 Who the fuck said he was having any problems? He obviously wanted to show his awesome set up to us o.O

  • @FKProds who the fuck said I was talking to you? I obviously was talking to joker9494 o.O

  • How much do you pay for electricity ?

  • LOL 0:47

  • Squid server?

  • why not subscribe a dedicated server such a waste of electricity

  • Classical is pretty but I prefer the sound of the machines.

  • awesome use of those rigs and a nice setup.

  • its pretty cool and all but isnt it a bit impractical due to high energy consumption / heat output (in summer)? How many people does it serve anyway?

  • Good old linux :D makes your outdated windows computer run like a mac :P

  • fail

  • nice man!!!! but how many hard drives does that pc take??? i didn't know a mother board could take that many sata drives :-\

  • did you really have to put that sticker on the door? come on now.. what are you 12?

  • geeks hehehe

  • why? lol just because you can? because you could just have one awesome computer or two instead of worrying about all that. and have them all in other rooms and one as the server with wireless storage. lol

  • that is was i call cable management :D

  • Nice what do you host on the servers?

Or what do you use it for ;D

  • very nice equipment do you get money for this??

  • Just out of curiosity, what kind of ups do you use? If you need that kind of hardware for routing and serving some files, you DO have ups's installed?

  • @lesleyhenriquez

No at this moment i do not have a UPS install, wear i live the power rarely goes out(knock on wood) but the few time it has(some my flout playing with the breaker box) I have not lost any this in the future I would like to up grade to a UPS with Linux support just so i can shut the system down before the battery dies, to avoid the loss of DATA

  • That router is hugely overpowered. I have an Antec 300 ISK-65(65watt psu) with an Atom N550 with a tdp of 8,5 watt, it will rout and firewall my 120Mbit internet with loads of spare capacity(6 users, up to 12 systems online at once, excluding web, file and gaming server.) I also seriously doubt you could not virtualize all that shit on one system or unify most of it. Huge waste of money and power.

  • power usage???

  • Wow good setup. :)

  • @wintoons

    Thanks

  • i got a fucking boner

  • the red box and the yellow box make me think of sektor and cyrax from MK... ha hahhaha

  • Such a beautiful nerd cave. I need one so badly..

  • wy 4 pc´s

  • @mikejollie661751

The old geek say because I can :) and 4 is better then one

  • Why didn't you take a closeup picture of your monitor?

  • @HTPtheFirst

It was on the pf Sense boot screen pretty boring, if you Google image search pf sense boot screen you can see what it looks like

  • unbuntu really mateat work im trying to make 70 ibook g4's run on that shit and im hating every second of htat cheap crappy os

  • lol dude nice but overkill lol ^_^ ill run my ipfire firewall and routing services on an old athlon 1400 not on a 5200+ =P and how much is used of your 6tb space actually?

  • I dont understand why you arent deploying 2/3 NAS drives for file sharing/torrenting. I do however see the point in the hardware firewall

  • @waqasahmed939 once the movie are DLed i transfer then to the server clean up the folders and cover art and fan art and when the 1tb drive it full I store it and get another,

  • 120 days uptime :D i must beat that! hopefully your power went out since 2008 or else i have a LOTTTTTT of catching up to do

  • Wouldn't call this a "server" room. Would just call it a bed room.

  • @barryj12345

    Bathroom :)

  • WOW nice setup, about how much does it cost to keep these running?? I want to build my own server too

  • @fallenspirit123

35 a month and since they went up in 2009 i have had zero problems

  • Ahhh! Good ol' ikea cabinet :D

  • @gergy008

I know eh, so much of there stuff is just perfect for this kind of stuff ever time I go there i leave with some thing i dont need

  • @joker9494 you can virtualize almost all your equipment and save yourself and everyone else the power/money spent these junk machines (sorry but they kinda look junky)

  • Great set up

  • ВЫКИНЬНАХУЙ

  • most of you really need to learn how to spell . running a few old desktops and calling them servers is pretty far out there . really you would be better off , haveing one pc in each room , as needed , and just share files . trapping those old rigs inside a big heat box and hopeing a few fans are going to keep it all cool is a bad idea, cut the back out or some thing .

all and all pretty cool use of some old gear . i did enjoy the read mostly , nice job ...

  • @heydo6

Hey, just letting you know. You spelt "having" wrong you don't put an "e" after the "v".

Also you spelt "hoping" wrong once again, you dont put an "e" after the "p".

    Cheers!

  • @heydo6

These system wear bought brand new in 2009 with the sole reason to be used as a server/router and they have never over heated being in the cabinet

  • @joker9494 Why was the video made in 2008 then?

  • @heydo6 Start to throw in some vlans and a proper rack, then he will know what a proper server setup it. even if it is a hobby setup, spend that cash. the skills learnt from dealing with proper server hardware is invaluable

  • @heydo6 Surely if its used as a server, its a server... Sure you could have a purpose built system, but a desktop will run as one

  • @heydo6 Server = "a physical computer dedicated to running one or more such services, to serve the needs of programs running on other computers on the same network."

  • @heydo6

This is an old comment and everything, but you said "most of you really need to learn how to spell", but I didn't see that you included yourself in that. There is no "e" is "having" and "hoping", just putting it out there.

  • @heydo6 Dummy, server is anything what have any service what transfer data in internet, i can convert my pc to a server if i want, ..

  • @heydo6

We need to learn how to spell? You're the one that misspelled "having", "hoping" and shit load of other words.

  • this is week i have a 1GB ether and modem fiber optic. P.S. if you billed a reel power full home sever go with liquid cooling not fans!

  • @1Administrater

Why would you go with liuqid cooling in a data storage setup those files are there for safe keeping adding water to the mix is just plain stupid even the big boys (Dell, IBM, HP, Soloris, and the others) don't us water

  • @joker9494 the only rezone why i sead that is beaus i over clock my servers i have over clocked my i7 prosesers over theater intend capacity. and i cant make a video abowt it because if i did i will go to jail! suck to i what to show it off:(

  • @joker9494 Erm sorry to inform you, I work for IBM and we use water cooling for our racks :-)

  • @joker9494 lol you

allot of new high server setups will be using liquid cooling. I don't know why you think its bad.

  • @joker9494 IBM uses water but its in such a closed system that the only way it could leak is if you took a pair of pliers and ripped a copper tube from the cpu waterblock. as for all the people making stupid comments shush! Its actually pretty cool how IBM did it, its a complete no leak system because the waterblocks for each server tower are all connected with copper tubing instead of the nylon tubing or whatever home depot/lowes has to offer. of course they have to shape all of it before hand.

  • @joker9494 100% right, that guy is talking out of his ass

  • Media Servers? or Game Servers? Lol i hope you have unlimited internet

  • do servers cope with me spunking on it, wile screaming "oh ya baby take that bitch, now whose got a Hard Drive" ?

  • @TheLolWutBBQ Ubuntu has also server editions X)

  • So basically that is the hot box for you computers.

  • aren't those cases old pavilion ones?

  • I wonder how big the power bill is after leaving these on for a month or so, If I were to build a server I would build aFreenas server and maybe a crappy website :D

  • i don't see the point having a server in a home, having one or 2 computers for use is ok but like 3 servers? your not a institute, youre in a house, a computer with good specs can do everything you want and better by itself, only reason id see if you needed a server is for gaming if youre hosting a game server but thats it

  • @trevormeuse16 where do you see 3 servers? I only see 3 desktops

  • couldn't you integrate all your servers into a vmware server, im trying to learn if its better for vm servers then physical, i need a similar setup to use in my home. :)

  • @AnThOnYrox8 Stop learning i have the answer! Virtual servers are better! not in performance but in management and reducing costs.

And you dont want a similiar setup by the way :D

  • @AnThOnYrox8 well I've heard of b\people doing that and having a great time with it, so I guess its up to you

  • @ITGuru0111 oh, haha thanks! probly lost 1.5 TB

  • @ITGuru0111 yeah, i don't know why.......and the thing is that 230 ppl were on my site and it crashed, then i think a virus was on it so all the fans turned off and the cpu burnt :( and then it starting poping and blowing stuff up :(

  • @ITGuru0111 yeah, i don't know why.......and the thing is that 230 ppl were on my site and it crashed, then i think a virus was on it so all the fans turned off and the cpu burnt :( and then it starting poping and blowing stuff up :(

  • @DavidRockin1 You problably didnt connect the fans very well loool never heard of a virus that let yours fans stop spinning.

  • @nickboyz prob, idk....well i took my old computer, and it use to be win 98, and i deleted everything...when i boot it up nothing happens.. i have to use a win 95 boot disk witch it my uncles, to boot it up, he also lent me some disks, if i type in E:\setup.exe in command propt, from the boot disk, it gives a bunch of errors.... i will post a few video of it to help u to help me, cuz i wanna make it a server to replace my old one until i get a new one!!

  • @DavidRockin1 That is an old box lool. If you want to use it try linux its free hand has nice communities to help you out. But it is not for beginners esspecially if you want to install on a old box because you cant just do a full install of most distros out there like ubuntu fedora debian etc you need to adjust them. So i should try slackware linux. I have a video that simply install slackware 12.Good luck

  • my server blew up :(

  • open wifi./? thats silly thing to have on any newtork

  • use ssh ;)

  • Why is everyone complaining about sudo? You do know you can log in as root in a terminal and NEVER use sudo again.

    sudo passwd

Type ur sudo password, then your root password twice for confirmation.

Type su and hit enter, then your root password. You can leave that terminal open 24/7 if you want and issue commands without the sudo.

  • ZOMG WHERE IN CANADA U FROOOOOM?

  • is that a 5102 thats almost imposble to get it manly the same as the 5101 (bcm3349 chipset) but with a 64 client dhcp server instead of 32 spi flash and a stock noisy bootloader (seral)

i how much u want for it

  • i have only 1 tower full atx board, full of sata controller cards for i can stack HDD's in it have 8 drives running 2 raid-5 configs with 4 drives each. should be enough for a long while.

  • Can someone tell me the point of having a server?>?

  • 2G Ram? hahaha my cell phone have more...

  • Bach or beetovhen symphony. Is the music

  • name of song ?

  • open wifi ! thats cool i need all my neightbors do the same for god sake !

  • My fucking god... what do you do that you should need all that server space for....

  • I have a 2 Windows Xp servers, one to tream data off of and another that serves as a webserver.

  • Excuse me for being stupid but why would you need a server room in your home anyway? Why not buy a couple of computers and hook them up? What's up with a server room? You doing some illegal shit or something?

  • @zolidius it feels good well at least for us geeks

  • wooo linux now thats the way to go man. You should check out FREENAS for your file server

  • @latticelinux ya FreeNAS is epic

  • @latticelinux

I looked in to freeNAS but it is terrible slow, and with UBUNTU(any plain linux distro i have the ability to do what i want with the system 100%)

  • @joker9494 I would have to agree with that. Another thing is freenas is heavy on the GUI and I ran into multiple issues when making changes in both the GUI and CLI. Freenas is great for something thats a fast setup with a small foot print. However building your workstation and or server from scratch is amazing. With any distro that I have used that has both workstation and server installs it has always been better to install the server base package and then install your X session and WM.

  • wow dude you really have to work on your cable management lol or your gunna start a fire in there

  • @shuffle953 Cable management loool as if he needs to think about that with the few cables he is using.

  • Why did you make this video? Just to brag about your computer hardware? Try doing something of benefit to the online community instead of self congratulations.

  • Dude :O This is gonna sound Messed up XD I have sorry i should say my dad has a old Dell that look just like the one that's on the floor @ 0:12 XD

  • Moonlight sonata would've been much better for this video.

  • @TheLolWutBBQ He probably uses ubuntu server edition

  • hi whats that little display the yellow box has?

  • I agree. sudo is so annoying when your trying to set stuff up!

  • ok ubuntu has several versions, ubuntu desktop, netbook ,and server. the server edition doesnt naturally run x server (the gui) and u can start it fi you want but it doesnt hog ram, processor, or anything else for that matter. if you dont believe me i encourge you to go do the research!

  • What? I was talking about the sudo command and passwords.

  • So that black box performs well? I've been thinking about building a media server that can simultaneously stream Hulu streams and FLAC over gigabit ethernet. Current media server is based on Athlon XP 2500+, and can't even handle Hulu via PlayOn.

  • I live in Canada, so i have no access to HULU with out a proxy and have never tried the service. But if not mistaken it is a service similar to You tube and in that sense why would u need a server to view the streams. And for FLAC I have personal streamed over 30 movies(480p) of this box to one PC, and done 5(1080p) 6(720p) and about 10(480p) at once as well as my itunes server witch handles FLAC and MP3. What OS is on your server? hope this has helped

  • sort-of, i'm running windows home server right now which has the integrated xbox streamin part built in but i really want to switch to Linux and a big part of my house for my family is to be able to access the huge database of movies i have stored instead of using dvd's now i know orb media player will do it for any normal windows computer but i want one for linux.

  • what service are you using for the x360 media server?

  • Have you tried running dd-wrt on that router instead of open wrt? I used open wrt until i saw dd-wrt and noticed how much better its supported.

  • No I have not i had the router for 3 months, and started to notice that once i started to download more the little WRT just couldt keep up it was the fact the hardware was just to slow. No OS could fix that :( so i built my pfsense box and em loving it, it maybe total over kill but i dont mind i will have this router for years to come and even if my internet gets upgrade to 100 up 100 down i know it will be able to keep up

  • you can hack these router (wrt) to have a USB key instead of ram ...

they run MUCH faster after that ...

  • Well sadly my does not have the USB port but it was bound by the CPU not the ram, its only 140mhz (some then like that) and trust my with the abuse I give my internet connection it just could't keep up. Not that I didt love my little blue linux router but it was just to dam slow

  • The only linux machine I have at home is a Popcorn Hour (Networked Media Tank). I use Samba to transfer files to and from my Windows machines, but it's painfully slow - like 5MB/s slow.

Is this related to transferring between NTFS and EXT file systems? Or are the slow transfers related to the cheap hardware in a Popcorn Hour?

I ask because it seems silly to use a home server that can't transfer files fast.

  • I personaly get upwards of 50mb/s to my fileserver over gigabit network, so i think you problem lies in the fact that the popcorn hour has a slow cpu, no gigabit netowrk interface and the fact that your files maybe on a USB drive or a slow notebook drive

  • yeah, it must be the slow PCH hardware. i transfer files between Windows computers on my network at over 100 MB/s, so it definitely isn't my network.

  • very nice!!! but get some zip-ties and rangle those sata cables! heat isn't good for hard drives and from the picture it seems that the cables are blocking the case fan. I'm just saying... but still thats the shit you got there

  • Ya it is a little bit of a mess, I want to clean it up but i can really be botherd since I plan on building a brand new server very soon

  • Is this at home or is this a business? I kinda want to run 3 servers right now instead of breaking my back into running only 2, just to save electricity. what a shame on my part. you have so much better equiptment than i do.

  • This is in my house, and i would stick with the 2 systems I have to admit this is a little over kill but i like to go all out! and besides to servers is cheaper to run then 3

  • nice, dude ;)

  • nice one you will se mine

  • Fans stuck to the wall

  • should try AMD Opteron for more RAM

  • Well i can put up to 8GB of ram in the servers both run 64bit linux, and the router can support up to 4gb (32bit limitaion). But whats in them is enough i dont need anymore then what i have, most the time there at less then 50% used (excluding cache). And for my next round of upgrades I will be switching to quad Xeons on a dual socket mother board

  • I just went with a quad-core (8 logical cores) Core i7 @~3GHz, 12 GB RAM. Beats the pants off of anything I've ever used. Runs 64-bit Fedora Core 11. Mostly for programming, application servers, database thrashing and virtualization. Whatever I throw at it, it just yawns and says, "Please wake me up when you're actually _serious_." And I just smile back :)

  • what is the purposes of these servers?

  • Well one of them is my router(Yellow), DownLoading Files(RED), and anything you can dream up(Back), and a testbed(White).

  • music fail... nice vid though

  • Ubuntu Sucks, but thats my opinion I have a freedom of speech and am allowed to voice it.

Another opinion of mine is that Windows XP is the best OS in the world next to windows 7, but XP is better.

  • ...blue pill effects!

  • grandmastgarth i really hope your high because what you said is just plain stupid, at least give some facts

  • No i don't smoke nor drink, Ubuntu just sucks, its not even stable Windows XP is better than ANY linux distro, and yes i've tried many including Ubuntu and it crashed when i tried to open a terminal

  • i do know that you are stating your opinion, but obviously you don't know how to use linux if it crashes when you open the terminal. if the terminal crashed for everyone then linux would have failed on an epic level a long time ago.

  • The kid's right, man. Linux in the home is "neat-o" if you are the type who likes to build your own furniture. Most of us prefer to go to the store and make a purchase of quality and save a shit ton of time.

I am not denying the fact that linux is very powerful and secure, but it is such an extreme pain to work with.

  • Actually linux is easy as hell if you're good with Pc's....

  • Linux is easy as hell? Please tell that to someone trying to use a WiFi card. It is the opposite of "easy as hell". Give linux to someone who knows nothing about a computer. Then give them Windows. Then give them OSX.

You honestly suggest that Linux dominates? You're an ass.

  • It is very easy installed it on over 10 systems no problem, and have you ndiswrapper and looking up a how to there got to be one for your wireless card

  • Did you not read the end ? I said if you're good with PC's besides I said nothing about linux being dominant I even use windows my self.... so please Read before commenting and being an ass

and whatever issues you had with wireless cards those changed it's simpley double click and insert your Key and that's pretty much it....

    P.S I use all 3 Os's I love them alike.

  • dude u then need to learn about the kernals of operating systems and the protection systems of linux and why they are vastly superior to windows. and if its because u just cant figure out linux go learn it itll help u know more about ur computer than u have ever known

  • Yeh, so superior. That's why you have to use a command line to install everything. It's good for servers, but as a normal operating system, wtf.

  • 3 Servers for view Jobs. Wasn't that very inefficient?

Why you don't run the Services on 1 or max 2 Machines?

  • Well the Firewall/Router has to be its own system for securty and i kept the other to systems sepurtet so i would not be thrashing my storage drives with BT traffic, and the i would always have CPU cycles to waste on my server for what ever other apps i may want to run on it in the future, and i dont pay for electricty :D

  • 1:05 holy fuck :D

  • Thanks :D

  • Thanks :)

  • Nice setup I love it you keep it so simple and easy.

How do you use pfsense firewall? If you could explain abit i m interested to know about it. that how it is protecting you?

Is it connected to ur modem first and then your local network?

i am a bit confused how do you use that if you got time let me know thanks

  • Thank you very much. The pfsense firewall is pretty much a 80 dollar router on crack. It's about a thousand times faster, it can handel a hell of a lot more traffic then any d-link or linksys router could dream of. its completely tweek able i can pretty much do what ever i want with it. and it protects me from out side attacks. And yes it goes between my modem and my network

  • nice setup, is everything running gigabit or do you have some that's 100 base-t also, im starting to switch things over to gigabit, im running a data/game server at 1.5tb of space till i got some externals to plug my 2 other 500gb hard drives into it, im using all linksys switches and haven't ran into any probs yet, ill be doing a vid when i get it all set up for gigabit, do you know what's a good network typology to use for it

  • Yes every thing is gigbit except for the xbox and some of the laptops, but i used cat 5E and i really wish i had used cat 6. so thats a future upgrade. And my there linksys switches(all the same as the video) and the linksys router(all be it slow) all run perfect. unlike the stupid dlink rounter i had in my home theater for a total of 30 mins. (dlink sucks) and I dont normaly us terms like network typology(i just build it fancy words are for smart people) so i look it up on wiki and i think im

  • running an Extended star start, its the best sounding match to what my network looks like

  • yea thats what im running right now to goes modem to down stairs wifi ( which is also my DHCP for the network) to up stairs wifi and then to my gigabit in my room

  • how much of that 6 TB are you actually using?

  • Right now im sitting at 3407.2 GB free

  • not that good at all mine is better

  • I am sure that you have a video to prove it?

  • Ya can u please show me a video first then come back and complain like a 12 year old girl

  • wow!

I'm also a computer freak. This server room is very awesome. I also planned to build a home server and set up a wireless network for my friends. but you got a lot more space as i will ever need

  • Thank You, and if your talking about hard drive space ya I diffidently went a little over board, but i do plan on filling it up. Im just about to pass 2tb used so I'm well on my way. And if you me the room ya I could probably just put it in a closest some wear but this room was free so I figured it would be nice to have some wear to sit

  • sorry, I was talking about the hard drive space :)

  • How i see well in the case you can never have to much hard drive spave, my next server is going to be 24 or 48 terebytes depending on weather i go with 1tb or 2tb drives

  • nice serve their but do you really need all those? i can just dismantle a ps3. take out the cell. use it. and steamroll your who set up 20times over. lol cell floating point 2.2 teraflops..
