Newt endorses the mandates and he supports the exchanges, but he opposes a general single payer system. I absolutely love Charles, and his insight into poltiics. Usually, Charles is quit right in his assessments. However, he needs to get full context directly from the source, before making such a statement.
If you you all watched the recent center seat with Newt, he very eloquently explained his logic when he made that statement, which to me, made perfect sense. Imposing a mandate or system on our society without people having full knowledge and understanding of it, is a recipe for disaster.

Krauthammer captured the sentiments of republican voters perfectly: They see Gingrich's flip flops as deviations from a conservative core. Romney's flip flops are deviations from nothing. Gingrich's service to the republican party, his consistency on abortion and gun rights (two very important issues to the GOP base) testify to his core conservatism. Romney is a classic northern, east coast "republican"

That is not true. He had it in his book that he would like to do what he did in massachusitts and implement it to the rest of the country. Then when the tea party emerged, he took that out of his book. He also stated on meet the press he would support a nationwide mandate.

@DP3mo24hofosho Romney never supported an individual mandate on a national level. In the paragraph right above that passage (in both versions of the book), Mitt clearly says that states can adopt whatever plans they want.
When he said his plan is a national model, he's always prefaced it by saying that states can have their own plans and that it should be done on a state by state basis.
Those remarks don't make in into the edited soundbites, but they prove that Romney is not a flip-flopper.

@DP3mo24hofosho The liberal media has put out a false narrative that Romney is a flip-flopper by taking quotes out of context (just like the individual mandate stuff) and it has stuck. But that doesn't make it true.
For example: on gay rights, Romney has always supported domestic partner benefits but has always opposed gay marriage and civil unions. He's been 100% consistent on this issue.

@DP3mo24hofosho He's never gone back on his saying he wants gays in the military. He has said that now is not the time when we are at war to make this decision.
When he was asked in a debate last time around about him saying in 1994 that he "looked forward to the time" when gays could serve openly in the military, he responded by saying "now is not that time" because we were at war.
If you want to count that as him dodging the question, then fine. But it's hardly a big "flip-flop".

@alaskachillydog Well both Democrats and Republicans are against debt and deficits, but somehow they get bigger and bigger. They are oppossed to higher taxes and here we seem to pay more everytime. I just know that when Obama was running he admitted that his energy plans would increase the cost of electricity, his foreign policies have been ineffective, and that's just the start. He has stated how he would solve issues in debates and speeches. Only bigger mistake than Obama is named Biden.
