Niiiice this is evil. Drumbeat is crisp and simple the way I like, and that warble bass is hypnotizing. I think you could almost scrap the melody from 1:30 to 4:00 and go straight to the one you introduce at 4:10, it's nice. 5:30 arp is all over the place, it's madness :)
Right around 4:20 you started some knobtiddlin' improv. I love a producer actually interacting with their music (unlike some "pop" stuff).
Although i would have to recommend that the speed and feedback ratio of some kind of flange effect. I suppose I am recommending more of a psytrance skwelch, or something liquid.
How exactly does that work? I have a emx and i want somthing like a virus to go whit it. You let the 5 synth part play stuff like you normally do on the emx and the virus then also recieves the notes to play via midi?
Correct. You make the Virus play the Emx tracks via midi, then you mute them keeping the volume down or like I did, select the waveform to external source-in (which obviously is disconnected). You don't want to use the actual part mute/solo buttons because they trigger midi, not audio, and you need them to play the Virus.
@sph9000 I have a question please. I'm actually hestating to trade my Roland MC-307, mainly used for seqencing purposes for an EMX. I need to sequence a Waldorf with it. I know that on the EMX, the synth parts are mono.
BUT can you sequence via MIDI polyphonic patterns from the synth you are piloting, since you're using te polyphonic sound generator of the synth, not the EMX ? Are you able to use the polyphony of your virus in the setup of this video?
how do the emx and virus get along together? I am very curious about changing patterns and program/bank select messages. Can you get the virus presets to change along with the emx? On my emx (squencing vsts) when I turn the wheel to select a new pattern, the stupid machine sends program change messages immediately, and NOT when the pattern actually starts (at the end of the bar). Have you managed to work around this?
I connected the midi out of the EMX to the midi in of the Virus. This way everything you play on the EMX will play on the Virus as well. 1-5 parts will play 1-5 Virus channels and rhythm part will play the 16th channel. Then I muted the osc of my EMX synth parts leaving only the drum part audible, and in the Virus I muted the 16th channel. The EMX sequencer is playing everything, the only thing is that the synth parts sounds in there are replaced with the Virus. That's it! Hope I was clear :-)
If you are using a drummachine with Logic you will have to set the drummachine clock to EXT in order to use it as a slave sequencer synched to Logic. Anyway I didn't use any sync in this video, because there's only one sequencer there. The only job MIDI is doing there is note sending.
Each of the 16 tracks is an independent polyphonic synth. Example: now you could create 16 midi tracks in Ableton and send each to one of the 16 Virus channels. Now you'll set a different sound for each track, like a bass drum on the first, a snare on the second, and so on, including basses, pads, leads... You've got now a powerful groovebox for electronic music under your hands, instead of those VSTs or internal Ableton sound generators, but it's your choice...
No, at all. I use multi mode, and often set a channel to audio in. Filters and delay/reverb are so good. As for the vocoder, I didn't play with it a lot, but it sounds ok to me.
Yeah, 16 polyphonic tracks. Isn't it good? You could write on your sequencer your songs and use the only Virus as the sound source: rhythm sounds as well as basses and other melodic textures. Everyone realtime editable. Think about morphing your kick into a melody. Virus rules:-) It's live sound! It's hardware!
Sequence the virus with an esx is simple: esx midi out to virus midi in. Then you only have to make sure the esx sends midi only to channels you want to play on the virus, 1 and 2 in your case. I usually turn all the other channels to 16 and 16th virus track is mute. Chuss!
thx for the information .. and i got another one then .. didn't you plug the audio out from the esx to the audio in of the virus to use it possibly for effects ?? plus: how did you combine the sounds of the 2 devices ?? with a external mixer ??
You can either plug your ESX into the Virus as well as the Virus into the ESX. I usually run the Virus thru the audio in of the EMX because I consider it as a sound source, so it's easy for me to make mixes directly on the Electribe (mute, filters, fxs). Don't forget you can also make realtime slices!!
Very nice mate! I love the evil sound of the Virus. I just got a Classic to add to my live setup, looking forward to getting some more tunes online using it. :)
Do you simply trigger the virus via midi/out from Korg? Have Korg e-sx1 and virus B(next time)....Thx for Answer.....greetz

how do you set up your virus and drum machine?
midi I mean...drum machine out to virus thru or what?
then what is done on the sequencer...I use logic for example...do I have to sync the drum machine with midi clock?

so is it like your playing 16 different tracks in the same key?
or can you program different tracks to have different rhythms?
I dont know if all this information really even matters.
I just bought the new ableton which happens to have unlimited tracks of audio.
I think that might beat my Virus
haha
You an ableton user?

Yeah
I've heard the vocoder's not all that great
I really haven't used multi mode
what advantages does this mode bring?
XYtoTheDoubleG 4 years ago
In multi mode you get 16 tracks playable simultaneously.
sph9000 4 years ago
so... you can have 16 different sounds going at the same time?
is this what you're telling me?
