I don't know why people think walking a dog on a leash is normal, but not a cat. If the cat will walk with you, then why not on a leash? Prevents them getting run over when out and about - just like a dog. The only reason people think it's strange is because most cats don't dig it. But there's nothing inherently weird about it.
@123444122 thank you! finally someone who gets it. I enjoy taking my cat out for walks and she will walk on her leash. She adores it and it's great for the cats to get fresh air, as well.
Nice, my kitten is currently in training to walk, so far she is doing fantasic! Took a walk today and it started raining, she got a little cranky but then got use to it, we headed home when it started to rain anyway.
@razzg My cat gets what I call "cabin fever" (running wild inside, jumping, running, running AND jumping, generally just SPAZZING the hell out), so it might be good for her to get some exercise... this is just one reason someone might walk their cat.
Long time ago, I walk with my " Tom the cat" along the beach, up to 5 km without Leash. and close to home I and "Tom the Cat" raced to my home. "Tom the Cat" tried to sleep my bed. I love him and he is my friend
I've taken my 2.5 year old gray and white female Tabby, Bella, out for a walk five times now. Prior to this, I tried getting her used to wearing a harness, but both of the store-bought ones I used she was able to work her way out of. My next move was to make a harness from an old fabric belt by following instructions I found online, and it worked. Stastically, cats that are permitted to run free live on an average of 3 years while those kept indoors grow to be 13 years old.
I'm shocked the cat walks straight down the sidewalk like that. I've taken cats out on leashes, but they tend to stay in the same spot in the yard, or freak out when cars go by. Very impressive!
I am also getting my kitty cat to enjoy the outdoors. She definitely seems to prefer trotting in grass rather than sidewalks, but hopefully she will soon be as comfortable as your kitteh
Is this something you have to teach your cat? When I put a leash on mine, she'll just lay down and start biting at it.
She loves going outside, but both of my cats have an issue of running off into some hole under the house, and I don't want them down there, but I want them to enjoy the freedom of being outdoors.
Is there a way I can train my cat to be more comfortable with a leash?
i got mine to enjoy being outside on a leash, she trained me to how i walk her@!,...still i do have a say in the direction now, it has taken me about 3 months of patience to get this far@! i am very happy, everyone told me to give up, NEVER@! she will do it like a god any day now, im sure of it...
Your cat is so beautiful - a Russian Blue I presume? I couldn't tell if the eyes were green but I'm going to assume so! I hope I'll be able to walk my cats like this someday haha
It's probably easier to leash a cat than most people think. I had an similar leash as you, with two straps, one around the neck and one around the chest, and it doesn't seem like the cat even notice that it's there. My cat was 10 years old at the time, had never used a leash and is an outdoors cat. My cat is a bit shy tried to run away when she heard cars or busses, so you probably have the best chances if you start using it when they're kittens.
what leash and where did you purchase it my Lawrence has slipped out of the 2 I've purchased, we want help because he is interested, amenable to the idea-
how did you put the leash on cause you kknow cats scratches you or they thinks its a toy so how do you make it comfortable for him to wear it without minding...?
I will also teach my cat to walk on a leash. I started today and he walked :-D Ok it took some time to get from one corner to another but still it was not that bad and he was not afraid (that much) :-D
When I think about it, dogs don't like walking on a leash right away either. :'D I've seen a cat on a leash in real life before and that cat sure didn't like it. I guess it's just a matter of training, just like it's with dogs.
I'm in the process of training my cat to walk on a leash and he got better day by day, then I tried a retractable leash on hime and he freaked out with I used it, any advice?
I really like this video, one of my favs. You can tell your friend enjoys the walk. And you show us you enjoy taking your buddy along as well. Nice touch with the bonus shoulder "ride" through the door at the end. Would really like to see another walk again some time soon.
My sister had an orange-striped tabby, named Punkinhead, who ALSO walked on a leash. HE would not go outside UNLESS and until he had his leash on.
I have a couple of bunnies and have a harness and leash for the little one;; each time I try to put it on her, she flattens her body to the floor so I can't do it. One day, though (maybe right after she's fixed and is sleepy enough), I will do it and have her walk ME!
my cats are completely outdoor cats, one spent her kittenhood on a farm. well, some dumbass neighbor complained to the police about them always being out and about even though the never did any harm, and now they're only allowed outside on leashes. they hate it, I hate it, and I swear I can see the neighbor who reported us watching and laughing through the window. it pisses me off. also, how did you get your cat on your shoulder?
Mroww, notice how the hu-man did not ever impede the free movement of the superior being by lagging behind. Convenient way to lead the hu-man about while keeping all four paws unencumbered.
When I got my first kitten, he really had a hankering to go outside. I love going on walks, so I decided to train him with a leash and a harness. As soon as he was outside he seemed to forget it was there! I took him out regularly, and let him explore his surroundings, and eventually he became quite comfortable with the leash :)

OMG your cat loves it! I've trained my cat to come when I call her and to sit quietly and patiently when I trim her hair (for a cat anyway), but this must have taken some serious time and effort. I'll be moving back to a big city soon and will be living in a studio, so I've been researching leashing a cat. You're video was terrific.
Me and my cat do this all the time, but only if i push him to walk. Since he's outdoor/indoor cat and we live on long island he basically only walks if he has to. *has to everyday :P when its nice out*
that's really cool that your cat actually runs out the door. I think if mine became an indoor cat he would do the same. :)
But it's great exercise for them and he really gets happy when he goes and smells a bunch of stuff lol.
Neither my cat nor I had the patience for leash training. He played up so terribly that I decided to get him used to the lead by just putting it on him and tying him to a chair while I sat down for a cuppa. He bolted with the chair in tow and squirmed himself free. I didn't see him for the rest of the day. Your kitty is perfectly trained.
Me and Otto have tried this. Not even near a street. He gets so scared he hyperventilates. It sucks cause he wants to be out and about big time. He spends all day in the window looking out on the world.
We just adopted a Russian Blue or Chartreux cat. He acts like he will let me do this, in time..... Looks like a lot of trust involved. I bought the little leash!
huh huh . just wait till your babe is as old and heave as my smokey! the carrying on the shoulders part gets a little harder! smokey is my first pet and she's 10, at her age i think the leash would freak her the f... out, but i can assure you after the first couple of times she'd "get it" she's super smart!
You are very fortunate to have such a well trained cat. I tried a harness on mine to get him used to the outdoors and the traffic but he just belly-crawled and sulked so i never used it again
@ffcbulldog666 it's a slow process, you have to have patience - cats just don't take to it off the bat like dogs. I am working with mine right now, he is 7 months, and after 2 weeks of indoor harness and leash practice he went outside today for the FIRST time, and this was my private rooftop. He wont be out on the street for another week or so till he is comfortable with the city sounds.
That is awesome!

huh huh . just wait till your babe is as old and heave as my smokey! the carrying on the shoulders part gets a little harder! smokey is my first pet and she's 10, at her age i think the leash would freak her the f... out, but i can assure you after the first couple of times she'd "get it" she's super smart!
