I love hitting the FH on the run and hard, and from the baseline I am very accurate. However as I am running forward on the approach shot, I always overhit and it goes out a bit. How do you add enough top spin to keep it in that close to the net?
I hit it a lot like you, but my coach wants me to get my racquet back before the ball goes over the net, which is hard to switch from a normal swing, so what do you think?
It would great to see a video on how to handle short balls during co-operative rallies, eg. how to come in and hit a short ball and then move back to continue rallying from the baseline. When doing some practice hitting down the middle, I find I often get "stunned" by a short ball, and I assume it's partially because I do not predict it well (feet not connected to the eyes), but perhaps more so because I don't know how to solve the forward and back problem with my feet.
Very nice. I showed your forehand vid to my brother in law. The footwork aspect is so important. I use a Jim Courier like setup technique and a Berasategui grip so I won't be able to lift off the front foot as much, but I do try to "glide" through my shot pushing off both feet and not be as planted as say Roddick. If it wasn't for doubles experience I would be stuck on the baseline!
Hey, I have a question. I stopped playing tennis for 2 years because an injury. Now my forehand sucks but its not because my technique is because my timing. What can I do to improve my timing?
jeff i have a question, when you do the lift and land, can you finish the swing over your shoulder? or you have to '' turning the hand'' across your body?
I see alot of players running straight at the ball and then being unable to execute the approach shot. Important to run not straight towards the ball but more around and toward so that your body can get sideways, them employ the footwork shown in the video.
"Don't jump! Stay grounded!" is what my instructors would say. That is because if the ball landed short but kicked up high, I would have the urge to get to the ball quickly only to jump up and hit at the same time with terrible form. It's not so easy to "hit" then follow with a "hop" like the pros.
important footwork pattern. I have a bit opposite problem with my students: they think to hit the forehand on their way to net just "in running", which is even in this pattern not the case: it is not stopping, but there is a "loading moment". Important in my view is in this pattern what is doing the front foot.... anyway that a lot for this video...
i learned that by doing it through reflex cuz thats what my body told me to do wen i was running up to the net

Dear coach, could you suggest some drills?, how to practice for the hop+swing with accuracy because it is not easy for some kids. Thank you.

@mephatboi i found it! check out fed hitting a low ball @1:48: watch?v=plw3cfD6tnw
federer tucks his right leg behind his left knee (@90 degrees) as his left leg straightens up... prob for balance but his style is awesome!

This front foot hopping step, is "winner oriented" ?
In other video you use a "step through the shot" to approch to the net...
when we have to use one or the other ?

Thanks for the tips, would love to see it in a point-based situation to better see your instruction.

Oooh! Excellent point, MegaReemas. You're absolutely correct! It's that Carioca steps that I'm missing! Thanks!

Great vid...can you do a video on the follow-up volley?
Especially if the ball comes back as a high backhand volley
