Well I would really call the NKVD a " special unit", they were the police, secret and public. Also I would love if you could prove to me that 99% of germany followed or didn't resist nazism. When the Nazis gained power in 1933 they had around 2000000 members. at the hight of power they had around 8500000 members. Most of these members were there because of there careers (postal, railway ect.) and they had about 1000000 active members. this is from a population of over 90000000!
I'd like to add that I am sick of people trying to pass the buck on this issue. If this guys isn't considered a Nazi then who is? Don't say Hitler and a couple followers because this was a huge movement

Which leads me to your last question, and if your read anything I wrote then you would know that the nazi party had around 2 million active party members. Those 2 million, I consider Nazi's. If you want to count the non active members thats fine, but that leaves 81500000 germans that had nothing to do with the nazi party.
I must add that the 2 million party members don't include the SA, and SS. But, for fun I'll add 3 million members of the SA ( #'s from 1933), and 1.25 million SS ( #'s from 1945) in with the number of people who you could consider Nazis. Although it is widely known that at the end of the war the SS was made up with allot of soldiers who were forced to join to fill the SS's numbers. But even IF they were ALL Nazis that still leaves, 77250000 germans that had nothing to do with the nazi party.
I'll even go one further and add 1 million members of the Algemeine SS ( #'s from 1940, and yes I'm getting these #'s from wikipedia) to the mix, leaving a MINIMUM of 67.25 million Germans that were not nazis. Although to be fare, like I said before not all members of the SS were nazis OR were in the SS voluntarily. But it's not like I'm going to convince you of that fact anyways, you've already condemned 90million Germans!
I feel I should add, that since I'm obviously talking to an American, ( and I'm assuming that your family's been there for generations) that your relatives must have been murderers as well...... have you heard of the Native American Holocaust .......If all Germans according to you murdered the jews then the same as to apply to the Native American Holocaust!

yeah. Maybe not everything is true in the book which was the pattern of the movie, but the story is true. some maybe say "unbelievable, nobody can escape and hide that long on 8000 miles" or whatever. it could had gone wrong or end always on his escape, but he was lucky to survive.
I enjoyed the film, and that prompted me to get the book, which I think is even better.
I couldn't believe that the Camp commander would personally chase Forrell for 3 years accross Russia and catch him at the border bridge-only to stand aside! The book version is more believable.
I also didn't believe that the Russians could march their prisoners thousands of kms from the nearest railhead fo the eastern cape, but that really did happen!
