Hey guys, I'm a paramedic what happens if I get a police K9 thats Hypoglycemic? Can i give the K9 D50 or D25 like what we use on human patients or is that not safe for dogs?
This...really, really ,really helped. I actually bought exactly what she has on his hand that she gave to the dog. I even put pancake syrup in his food.
@rkenshin0922 its like sweet syrup for dogs. There is different kinds. For dogs, cats, etc. But if you have a dog (obviously) if it's a puppy you will need to buy puppy vitamin syrup, and if your dog is an adult then buy the adult kind. I forgot what It is called. Since it was a year ago >_>, but its a syrup that is really good for your dog. That I think you can give it like once a day or twice a day.
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster thanks for the reply jojo. i'm taking her to a neurologist tomorrow since my primary vet insist that its not hypoglycemia, even though her glucose is low on the testing. i had another vet check her glucose, but i didnt fast her that day, but he said he should be able to get a pretty accurate reading and he said its ok. but thank u for replying.
@rkenshin0922 yeah. I hope your dog is fine. I realized my reply wasnt really any help. But that syrup helps everything balance out, as well as a few vitamins in it :) I had problems with my dog. Now he's 1 year and a half he's healthy.
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster thanks jojo. i just came from the neurologist & she said everything seems to be fine. she's not sure if its a seizure or not, but to test things out, she suggested doubling the phenobarbital. 1 tablet in the morning & 1 at night. each tablet is 16 mg. i really hope this doesnt mess up my dog's liver. i really don't think its a seizure. it happens about 8-12 times a day, she'd twitch for a second & go back to whatever she was doing. happens a lot when she's drinking water
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster she also twitches from certain sounds. like opening the door or closing my gate or my parking brake. i dont know, maybe its just old age? but she's only 12...
@rkenshin0922 Ha ha ha. Yes I'm pretty sure it's because of old age. Don't you see elderly people? Yeah. :) 12 years old is not that old. It's probably something that she has. Like some people have habits, maybe your dog has a habit of twitching, I mean... you never know. Dogs are almost like humans. Even if they can't talk, or walk in two legs.
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster the weird thing is, it just started happening late august. certain sounds will make her twitch or while she's drinking water. i am hoping, at the least that it is old age. ive done tons of research and i dont even know what to look for anymore. the neurologist said it could be a number of things, but of course u have to do testing to find out, and i honestly don't want to put my dog through all them testing. its not a money issue, i just don't want her to be in pain...
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster and you are right, 12 is not that old at all. im really out of ideas here man. she's not in pain when she twitches. she just has a surprised look sometimes like "wtf just happened to me" look. i guess i'll see in 2 weeks. we're scheduled to come back on the 28th to see if doing using phenobarbital in the morning and night helped. i hate giving it to her cuz it slows down her movement, and she sometimes looks high when on it...
@rkenshin0922 Wow. :\ Im really sorry. As dogs get older more problems can happen. It also depends on your breed. I have a maltese. I havent had any problems yet except he's afraid of dogs and of rain (rain is normal). Twitching constantly isnt normal. I have heard of dogs just spazzing out and hitting themselves on the wall. I hope thats not happening with your dog. If so, she really needs to see the vet. It may be a habit or something serious. It might have to do with a nerve.
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster thanks man. i cut the dosage in half and asked my vet if that was ok since the neurologist won't be available until tuesday. since cutting the dosage, she doesn't look high anymore. i think she almost OD'd one night, and thats when i made the decision to cut the dosage. she still twitches everyday, but i'm noticing a slight improvement during peak hours of the medicine. i've tried to do research on dogs twitching while drinking or eating and i can't find anything on it.
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster she's a pomeranian. the neurologist said a brain tumor is least likely with that breed. maybe she has worms, so i might get her checked for that tomorrow. its been almost since this started. she runs around the house like nothing is wrong. and no, she's not spazzing and hitting themselves on the wall, just twitches. sometimes it's subtle & sometimes you can really see it. im scared to have her checked for worms cuz i heard the medication for that actually causes seizures
@rkenshin0922 There is many possible reasons. And you should do anything just so that dog can get better. I wonder if she feels any type of pain when she twitches. Don't be too scared to have her checked for worms because it's better to have her problem fixed. And the seizures is not really common, but it could happen. It's worth the risk.
@JojoTheJoCpuMaster her shots are up to date. she's an indoor dog, is it possible for her to get worms? i mean we do take her outside to do her thing & sometimes for walks. i don't think she's in any pain when she twitches cuz i dont hear her yelp & she doesnt look traumatized from it. she just can't control it at times, and the twitches only happens for 1 sec at the longest. i'll see if i can squeeze in an appointment with my vet tomorrow to check her for worms. thanks for the advice.
My poor baby Sparkle layed down, and put her paws waaaay above her head and started shaking. I was like crying my eyes out I thought she was gonna die. D:
Her Test came back Liver Faiure, The low blood sugar was just because her body wasnt doing its job, apparently she was 1 in a million in a litter with this and she had it..
she was now in a diabetic coma. Once put on the glucose drip by a couple of hours later she recovered, and I pick her up this morning..I will be putting a vidio of this on youtube of this experiance people need to know this is common with small breeds. if it had of been night when we all slept she would'nt be alive today..
Part 2 of comment: so of to the vet in a mad rush, I didnt know what was wrong I thought shed been poisoned, went though the list of what could have been's, her heart rate was under 50 she was twitching, so she was given something to correct that and put on a drip, had a blood test, which took 20 mins, her gums where white, she had a fit on the table it was horrible, her test came back all normal except her blood sugars was 0.45, a normal low is like 2.0 so you can only imagine.
My dog had a hypoglysemic attack last night, she had been dry reaching in the afternoon and I thought "oh shes been eating grass..". Later my son saw her outside looking tied, I did'nt know, and came out with her twitching and unresposive, of course I fliped. I thought she was dying.
what is that stuff in her hand and where can i buy that?

i just stir some corn syrup in my dogs water and put out a seperate bowl of plain water, this works to keep her blood sugar up.

White sugar, karo syrup, pancake syrup on their food and in their water always helps. Sometimes frosted flakes or fruit loops as a treat is good.
