I was using a MiniDV camcorder and decided to up grade. I'm not a big Canon fan, mostly because of price but I sure do love this camcorder. There is A LOT of great features on the HG21 and yes it does have a viewfinder (the HG20 does not). Its very simple to use and you have a lot of storage with the 120GB hard. I love shooting in the 24p ...

this or the canon hv40? cause i was going to get the hv40 but i just heard of this caera but i dont like that you cant record to mini dv tapes. please get back soon i need to coose next week.
Its pretty much the same camera. If you want to be able to record to miniDV, get the hv40. Its always nice to have that hard copy minidv but it also is another expense. Either way you go you will be happy with it.
@henryhop02 the quality of this looked far better in this video then the hv40 but you must just have it on the perfect setting. haha, btw howd you get the yellow-ish tint?
@henryhop02 can you tell me how to do that? i have adobe premiere pro and after effcts both cs4 and i know how to use them i just dont know where that setting is. haha
I export as 1280x720 full resolution mp4 at 30FPS. As for audio, I do not use an external microphone while filming skateboarding, I only use one if I am recording a person speaking and for this I would use a wireless LAV mic. If you were going to use a microphone to better the audio quality I would use the RODE VideoMic, they are fairly cheep and greatly increase the audio quality.
make sure you are filming in the full quality setting (theres multiple quality choices you can shoot in). Also mess around with the manual settings (Vivid setting is pretty nice and adds nice contrast). Also this clip is color graded, not straight from the camera thats why the colors pop. Good luck!
i dunno if you got it yet, but def. go for the HG21, i was having the same issue and realized the the 21 has a viewfinder, which can come to be a battery saver! plus the extra HDD space doesn't hurt :D
Hi henryhop02....I'd like to know something...is there a chance to set the language of the menu in Italian? Is it possible to record movies in PAL? I'm thinking about buying me an hg21,but getting it in the US would be lot cheaper then getting it here in Italy.Could you let me know if I can use it here with no problems? Thanks a lot :)
Well, Canon sells 2 different versions of this camcorder. The NTSC version is called the Vixia HG21, and the PAL version is called the iVis HG21. If you want to record in PAL, you have to get the PAL version. Otherwise, you could just change the regional settings in post.
Yes, this camera has many language settings, and Italian is one of them.
The camera shoots at 60i so the motion is pretty smooth. Youtube videos are very compressed and anytime you are streaming from the internet there is going to be glitches. I do recommend this camera and even in fast moving scenes it performs very well.
oh ok thanks, but dude i was reading how like it has a really bad battery and that the clips are hard to edit on the computer. is this true? i'd really appreciate if you could help me out cause like i trust skaters opinions lol
The batteries are pretty weak (especially if you use the LCD screen) but they are very cheep to buy. You can buy replacements on ebay for as cheap at 15 bucks. I would recommend buying a big 6 hour battery for like $30-40. As for editing the footage you do need the correct software. If you have a semi new mac with an hd version or imovie you will be good to go. I would research and make sure that your software can handle HD video, if it can its not very hard to edit the footage. Good luck!
Is there any specific type of battery (brand/model) that you would recommend getting for this camera? Cuz I heard that many third-party batteries aren't officially supported by Canon, therefore the charge level cannot be displayed with them. (?)
after effects has native support for the .mt2s files that the camera uses (type of mpeg video; I have both the camera and after effects).
When I edited a green screening clip with it, there were no imperfections in the edges and it rendered extremely fast (compared to my old camera, which was SD, that took 4ever).
Thats a good and cheap choice. if you want better glass and to preserve more of the awesomeness of HD you can get a Century Optics Fisheye but the Opteka will definitely do the job. Good luck and have fun!
It really matters what you are going to be shooting. But this camera does have great image quality (for the price) stores a whole lot of media (internal 120gig hard drive) and the accessories are really cheap (opteka fisheye $100 and jag35mm adapter $100-300). Hope this helps!

would you recommend this camera cause it seems pretty good in still shots but like when the skater moves it seems kinda choppy idk

The charge level can not be displayed through the camera but they usually have button on the battery that shows the charge
