Why the people still doing these bullshits comparisons of who is better?
Mike Portnoy is genius, Jojo Mayer is genius and I bet that the both are not giving a fuck about this competitive stuff with each other, they're focused in do MUSIC, and that's what it matters at all.
And man, they play differents music styles, why the hell are you comparing?
The thruth is that Mike Portnoy really doesn't do anything educational in the recent clinics, he goes, sign some autographs, take some pics and it's all ... or I'm wrong?
ive said enough on the internet about how awesome this mans drumming is so instead i want to take some time to focus on his hair. i wish i could grow a fro like that xD
so much hate rofl...both jojo and mike are great regardless of "attitudes" put mike in jojos shoes for a night and he couldnt do it...put jojo with dream theater for a night i guarantee he couldnt..
How do they even dare to pair Jojo Mayer with Mike Portnoy on a clinic tour? I guess it's because Mike Portnoy cleans Jojo's drums, wash his clothes and makes him dinner.. I knew his place was in the kitchen!
@sempthegreat i'm sorry to disillsusion you but if one of these two drummers behaves like a real star, then it's portnoy. he really was an arrogant prick that day (just an autograph session), letting his fans wait 90 minutes before he showed up since he was at burger king across the street. But Jojo is the man, a really nice and relaxed guy
@sempthegreat well, no misunderstanding at all - I just wanted to emphasize portnoy's asshole coefficient that day. there's obviously no need to discuss who eats whom for breakfast... ;-)
@sempthegreat Although Mike has an arrogant attitude, trashing him is immature and shows a lack of education. He's still one of the best progressive rock drummers alive today.
@indiscipline I fail to see how anyone could possibly be arrogant on a clinic tour alongside Jojo. Surely he would just see Jojo ripping every night and walk around with his tail between his legs as he realises time after time that he doesn't deserve to share a stage with such a high caliber musician. Bottom line, Mayer > Portnoy.
@tooldrummer Again, incorrect. Mike, regardless of attitude, remain to be one of the best progressive rock drummers alive today. It doesn't make ANY sense to trash him.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX Are you trying to say that my conclusion of Mayer > Portnoy is incorrect?! I was only trashing him for his lack of respect so that indeed does make sense. I actually quite like his drumming, I find it somewhat musical at times. However having someone share a stage with the most technically skilled drummer in the world (Jojo) who can barely play a double stroke roll is laughable.
@tooldrummer I'm not seconding your statement, as I feel that Mike and Jojo are both phenomenal. I do agree that Mike is disrespectful and immature a lot of the times though. Either way, I don't find whimsicality in the fact that Mike and Jojo shared the stage. Mike is amazing, just as Jojo is, so why can't they do a clinic together? Obviously, both musicians agreed on it.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX Look mate, you're right, I probably am being a bit harsh on Portnoy. It's just my initial reaction when I saw both their names on the bill was "something doesn't quite add up here". But, I guess it's just like when a big band plays and they have a support act. They are rarely of equal caliber/popularity. Nice use of "whimsicality" btw, no sarcasm, it's a great word.
@tooldrummer That is seriously fucking retarded, man. Portnoy is in some ways superior to Mayer. Can Mayer play a drum roll between his hands and his feet? Or decently fast double-bass pattern? It's not fair to compare the two. Portnoy chooses to focus on his way of drumming instead of learning rudiments. And his hand-to-foot combinations sound better than anything anyone can put together using just their hands so I wouldn't be so quick to conclude that Mayer is better.
@tooldrummer Also, Portnoy's work with odd times is something I've never seen from Mayer. Granted, his style of music doesn't utilize odd times and frequent time shifts are not common in straight-up beebop. You just have to learn to respect the fact that Portnoy has his own style that is no better or worse than a more "traditional" approach to drumming. Let's put it this way - neither drummer could play in eachother's respective band.
@metalmike83 JoJo not only plays in many diff. time signatures, he is always exploring polyrhythms. He pretty much set out to stretch the laws of time. JoJo also plays rolls with his feet, its just different obviously because his left foot is on the hats
@tooldrummer hahahahahaha...okay. Trash the guy who has a better feel than Mayer. Portnoy's fills always fit the music perfectly where as Jojo - despite his amazing hands - sometimes plays figures that are not quite as tasty as they could be. You are merely comparing hand technique it seems. You are looking at Jojo's amazingly speed and dexterity and concluding that this automatically elevates him above the level of Portnoy. Both drummers possess skills that eachother lacks.
@metalmike83 Dude, if you come on here trying to tell me that Portnoy has a better feel than Jojo then you're literally not even worth talking to. It's strange because you can actually write fairly well but there is no way you could come back from saying something like that. Some things you say even make me think you're trolling by how ridiculous they are.
@tooldrummer Lol. Saying that I'm ridiculous and that I'm a troll not worth talking to doesn't invalidate my points. Can Mayer play the Dance of Eternity? I know for a fact that he can't. Or how about A Nightmare to Remember? Common, he plays with a single pedal. You can't just automatically give him credit for being able to play difficult double bass passages simply because his hands are over-the-top scary good. They have different skill sets but neither are superior.
@tooldrummer I honestly feel that Portnoy has a slight better feel than Mayer. I mean, I love Jojo. But sometimes, I swear he plays things that just don't fit perfectly with the music and even throw it off a bit. I know some of that is on purpose. But for instance, I heard him play some bebop and he was way too loud with is left hand. I've heard guys like Gadd and Vinnie play that type of music and they sound like gold and play with a much lighter touch.
@tooldrummer Don't get me wrong - no one has better hands than Jojo - but that doesn't automatically qualify him as superior to Portnoy in every possible aspect. In all honesty, it's hard to compare feel really because they play different styles of music, but MP is at the top of the rock/metal food chain. I know Jojo plays mostly drum n bass now but his bebop is not as smooth as Gadd, Weckl or Vinnie. So overall, I would say that MP has a slightly better feel.
@tooldrummer It's at the very least debatable. I mean you could argue for either drummer being superior in terms of feel and ultimately argue over who's better overall but it's not as if I went crazy and said something akin to the earth being only 6000 years old.
@metalmike83 I know opinions are subjective but I'm sorry, this is not debatable. So what is Jojo doesn't play double kick? You seem to rate this aspect of drumming far too highly. Jojo's right foot is the best in the world and he sure can play some things that most couldn't play with a double. MP is not at the top of rock/metal. Guys like Danny Carey, Gavin Harrison, Steve Judd (Karnivool), Josh Freese, Abe Cunningham and any of the Mars Volta players whip his ass.
@tooldrummer Abe Cunningham? Josh Freese? Steve Judd? LOL. Dude, I looked these guys up and from what I've seen they are not even in Portnoy's league. They are not top drummers at all so I dunno why you brought them up. Danny Carrey can play at equals with Portnoy but when he solos he's not nearly as exciting or powerful. Portnoy and Carrey have two very different styles but I will say that it's easier for me to cover Tool songs like Parabola than it is for me to cover D of Eternity
@tooldrummer Gavin Harrison is the only drummer you mentioned who I actually feel is superior to Portnoy. I mean, he can do everything Portnoy can do except with more fluidity. Plus, he is more versatile. However, this does not diqualify Portnoy as a top rock/metal drummer and he is still leagues above the other guys you mentioned. I'm not even sure where you're getting your information from, you seem to be just spouting garbage instead of refuting me with actual facts.
@tooldrummer Furthermore, double bass drumming is extremely important in most rock and fusion drummers playing. Dave Weckl, Vinnie, Steve Smith, Virgil Donati and Gavin Harrison all use double pedals very effectively and are all at equals (or perhaps in Gavin's case) a bit better than Mike Portnoy. I simply cannot fathom how you can claim Jojo is better when he can't cover Portnoy's material. Granted, the same can be said about Portnoy covering Jojo's material.
@metalmike83 Oh so Portnoy is now as good as Weckl, Vinnie, Steve Smith and Virgil?! Those guys are literally part of the drumming elite. They are world class players. You are so painfully deluded it's almost laughable. Wake the fuck up man. Seriously.
@tooldrummer Why shouldn't we consider Portnoy in league with the best? I mean, Virgil made a mistake during one of Portnoy's songs when trying out for Dream Theater. I honestly can't see Weckl able to play Dream Theater songs at all. Or Steve Smith. Or Vinnie. Explain why if they are so much better. I can play a double stroke roll better than Portnoy. I therefore am automatically a better drummer, right?
@metalmike83 Because the best have played for more than one fucking band! They are the ones who have spent their lives mastering the instrument, 1000s of hours practice trying to reach perfection. They are sought after by the top artists and producers in the world. Playing a DT song does not qualify you to be in the league of the greats. Yes they could all play DT songs, Vinnie especially. Have you even SEEN Vinnie play drums?! Jesus. Get your head out of MPs ass already.
