My 16 gig zune works on itunes, amarok, and windows media player. I'm even able to copy music from my friends imac. This video is retarded please ignore it. MTP devices are a little sketchy sometimes but there's always a way around it. Plus zunes don't freeze up or require a reformatting to go from computer to computer, its a disturbing problem with the ipods that you can't go on someones library without risking to loose your collection.

Reply to Ben 55607- The Ipod only crashes with windows systems that have problems, I have yet to see an Ipod that has crashed with a Mac. If you look on the comparison on best buy dot com, the Ipod and Zune are almost identical in everything including battery life for music, movies and pics, the only advantage is that the zune has a radio, and a customizable background, the wifi doesnt count since you cant surf the web with it :(. Hes just saying it suks that zune doesnt work with apples.

A lot of you Microsoft apologists think that because the Zune doesn't work with a Mac that it's somehow related to a failing with Apple.

Actually, the Zune uses a protocol (MTP) that is specific to Windows, so by design, the Zune can't work with anything other than Windows.

It's not that big of a deal since if you own a Mac or run Linux, Microsoft assumes that you won't buy a Zune anyway. But don't think that it's the Mac's fault that it can't use Zunes. The Zune is hiding from the Mac.

That's not true on the software end. ANYBODY can make software for the Mac. Hell, OSX even comes with decent programming tools for free.

Windows isn't really "more versatile". It's more popular. There's a difference.

BTW, Windows can't run .App any more than OSX can run .EXE. If it were "more versatile", it'd be able to run other types of executables.

maybe you don't program or know much about anything but with a Mac i can just about use only mac software and specially designed hardware. But with a Windows OS I can install any new hardware i want with device drivers already included with it. Not only that Windows is adaptable and can download or convert almost any file into what it needs to be used. I can use an Ipod on a windows but not a Zune on a Mac. macs are Tech 'racist" they only want macs to work with mac products

iPods do not show up as an external hard drive on a mac desktop either you enable it as an external storage device in iTunes. However, regardless of the OS, the Zune does not give to option to use the player as an external storage device (unless you want to hack it). The Zune simply is not designed to be a user accessed HD. Since the Zune cannot be used as an external HD, there is no reason for OSX to mount the zune onto the desktop (just as the mouse, keyboard, etc).

And jcortes187, I'm not absolutely sure what you're referring to, but the Mac platform is very capable and supports quite a wide variety of things straight out of the box.

About the Zune, I don't care for the bigger screen: I listen to music more than I watch anything (I don't ever have time, even if it comes with me), so the video aspect is useless to me.

MP3 players aren't videogame consoles, there fore they can't rely on their media catalog to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Apple came out with a simple, attractive, small and affordable device first with an massive media blitz to match. It'll be hard to topple. I buy music players for MUSIC. USB hard drives or faster and smaller flash drives for storage. The iPod was way too slow for serious storage anyway. And, since there are 1000 ways to move data other than a USB device this still doesn't make sense to use an iPod for anything other than music. Which it doesn't do best anyway. You do buy a music player for music right? Then why doesn't the iPod do so as well as others in playing that music?

Just to comment on using an iPod as an HD- I would not work on files saved on the iPod, nor would I save files to the iPod. The iPod HD is to slow to be used as a normal HD. However, simply copying files to the iPod is extremely fast, especially using firewire. I can transfer 1GB in about a minute. Listening to music and having a portable back-up drive-- 2 birds with one stone.
