Reinhardt Teddy Suhren was a genius,one of the top U Boot aces.He was held in high regard by Donitz who once sent him 400 marks when Teddy was a bit short of cash.Teddy died of stomach cancer in 1984.

I just read that same article in WW II Magazine.

Suhren wrote about it in his book Ace of Aces.

They lost one torpedo during that when two of the attached lifevests came off midway between the boats.

Once the vests were off the remaining ones could'nt keep the torpedo afloat anymore and they could not do anything but to watch it sink.

Nonetheless Suhren's "stupid idea" worked. :-D

In his book he claims the torpedoes when fired turned out to be duds!

I believe he later found out that the torpedoes were sabotaged right in the factory.

Not sure though. Its been a while since i read his book. ;)
