I hated the Vietnam war. But those poor kids that had to act out the crap...That's the true crime. It was genocide against our own people. And the dead were the lucky ones. They didn't spend the rest of their lives being spit on, and remembering.
This is surely one of the most beautiful but heartbreaking songs ever done, Bruce is God, I think it is one of his best songs ever, and while the two missing verses original will always -- this is just the greatest. Anyone who hears this and doesn't cry, I don't know why.
I've heard one early version of this song with an extra verse or two at the end, where it's much much darker. He explicitly sings about Johnny going into that river without a name and drowning himself.
@biggi19902000 Yes, thank you. I knew I'd heard extra lyrics at the end in an earlier version of this song. I can understand why he left them out in the later versions, but either way, it's a beautiful song. There's also another live version that I've seen where he introduces the song and talks about how he first met Ron Kovic, the Vietnam vet who wrote the book "Born on the Fourth of July" and inspired this song.
A friend of mine just returned from his fourth and final tour in Iraq. He was supposed to have been discharged 2 years ago, but was stop-lossed and sent back.
During this past deployment, he was too close to an explosion, blast caused brain damage.
Listening to this song after talking to him about dealing with coming home, dealing with his injuries.
At least he came back, but this song really hits on the fact that nobody returns from something like that the way they were when they left.
why the hell would the american people trust this goverment or any goverment about war after korea, vietnam ,now iraq it bogglles the mind ever congressman and senator and bushes gang of liars should be marched down to the vietnam memorial and read the names of every person on there and then ask what the hell did they die for especially pres chickenhauk
@johno934 George W. Bush, AKA Chickenhawk-in-Chief, was the worst president America ever had! Had there not been election fraud in 2000, Bush may have never become president. I love the Anti-Bush shirt that says Chickenhawk in Chief and depicts Bush as an alcoholic, cocaine addict, and lying draft dodger.

With the exception of the French Foreign Legion I do have to wonder why he sang this song in France. The land of surrender and hoping the USA will save their useless onion and snail eating asses.FFL is the only real "French" Army and they are made of cast-offs of other countries...Just for the promise of "French" citizenship.
Europeans have had to deal with wars for thousands of years, and yes they are fed up with them. The USA, as of late, seem happy to go to different continents and start wars for absolutely no good reason.
And finally, this song is about people who are sent to those absurd wars and come back scarred for life, as well as the lack of consideration they get from their countrymen. I recommend to you the book (and movie) 'Born on the 4th of July' by Ron Kovic. The book inspired this song.
JohnO934....It aint just the "in theater" guys who are dying. My best friend/brother spent 2 years at Ramstein with the 435th CASF loading and unloading the wounded. It caught up to him stateside...he shot himself. I got PTSD from my time in an Iraqi field hospital. Bit I wont put my girl through that shit. 2 damn many kids and men are dying for corporate greed. Hillary or Obama wont bring them home either. They too are making MAD money at the cost of US Blood.
Its a lot more then that. People who load and unload the Medevacs at Ramstein/Landstuhl are developing PTSD from just hauling the bodies of the injured from the C-17's and putting those some injured bodies on the C-17's to go onward to Walter Reed,Malcolm Grow, and US Army Burn center in Texas. I did a 90 day deployment on that mission. My buddy spent 2 years doing it and it ended up pushing him over the edge. Between that and what I saw in Iraq and the issues I have I am surprised to still exist
And it's a very touching song. I'm sure it brings Ron Kovic to tears everytime he hears it. Since the song was written after Bruce read "Born on the Fourth of July"
im crying right now.

@Hyperion35 this is the last verse (from springsteenlyrics):
As the grey moon disappears beyond that ??? sign
Stars rise, grow brighter then gone gone gone in the black and endless sky
Like the others before him, he'd gone and done his best
Now he watches the water of that nameless river rise above his chest
