  • Easter-egg? - In an early PET Microsoft Basic, type the command WAIT 6502. The screen will fill with the text "MICROSOFT". This apparently was inserted by Bill Gates himself in order to assert Microsoft's copyright on PET BASIC after he had had an argument with Commodore founder Jack Tramiel.

  • Just grabbed one of these on Ebay for a decent price! I'm freaking psyched, and watching this repeatedly in anticipation. So thanks again for the video :D

  • @phreakindee Awesome! What model have you got?

  • @SteveBenway An 8032, US model. Looks nearly identical to yours minus a different faceplate under the monitor and with the expected 110v PSU.

  • advanced pc

  • love your channel, its been a ride down memory lane for me. subscribed to your channel, i'm a mac user now who uses computers mainly for graphics.

  • To me, the PET is the coolest looking vintage home computer. I just bought a German machine called a LEUROTEX 5000 which is the spitting image of one of these PETs, but is apparently just a "data terminal".

  • To me, the PET is the coolest looking vintage home computer.

  • @9:32 - Very nice motherboard!

  • I need that computer to finish my Commodore Collection :(

  • 8:30 - "I know nothing about computer hardware"... LOL, that about sums up this guy. Get a copy of Bit by Bit and dive in. A real hacker would have had the case off in the first 2 minutes or less. Actually, your best bet is to get a Time Sinclair 1000 manual, and read it... that is a good introduction to a very simple motherboard... you have one discrete chip for everything... cpu, rom, ram, etc

  • @cobrachoppergirl I have never claimed to be a hacker. I'm a collector, and a retro gamer, nothing more.

  • great video and review, I used to own a 8032 as a kid, never seen another one till now here, have seen the 2001 models but not the 8032

  • Don't feel bad that you brits don't have chicklets. They're pretty terrible, about the quality of hard gum you can get at dodgy seaside candy shoppes.

  • The top board is for the monitor. There is a bonnet style prop under the lid too.

  • Great to see the system reviews back. Retro heaven. How about the Oric machines next?

  • @Gazmonster1 Most likely gonna be the Memotech next, as I'm on a bit of a roll with it.

  • @SteveBenway Did you do the ZX Spectrum yet?

  • @TeamRocketReviews No, that won't be for some time. In all honesty, the Spectrum bores me senseless.

  • That's an interesting looking computer. I've gotta say though that the motherboard certainly looks like it has over 30 years worth of dust caked on it.

  • Great video Steve. Interesting about Commodore removing the RAM sockets on the lower memory models, the swines! I love it when the public figure out a way of getting more for their money. This happened recently with digital oscilloscopes made by Rigol - some clever hacker found that he could upgrade his 50Mhz model to a 100Mhz model costing twice as much, by simply changing some text in the firmware. So sales of the cheaper model soared & the more expensive model collected dust in the warehouse!

  • Grade Video (as always ;) Thanks!

  • cool my dad had one back in the day then he upgraded to a trs 80.

    good job Steve!!!

  • Great Steve, good luck cleaning that keyboard :)

  • lol chicken nugget!!!!! lol nice video good info dude!!

  • Amazing machine Steve. This is almost Black Monolith-like to me.

Shame about the keys. Keep us updated on those keys will you?

  • Thanks for showing this Steve, we had one of these in my catholic school when I was in the 1st grade but never had a chance to even use it.

  • Nice vid Steve.

  • Excellent review / overview of the PET Steve.

I remember at Computers Studies back in school there was a PET 2001 sat all alone at the back of the room because we (I was in the first year that CS was offered to) had just took delivery of 8 shiny new BBC B+' - I used it very occasionally trying to write a simple text adventure in basic and it was actually the teachers own computer!

I'm always faithfully hoping to find a PET - ebay isn't fiscally viable due to the weight of them though...

  • @bsg7 I never saw one, back in the day. First time I saw one was when I bought this beastie.

I totally understand avoiding ebay due to the weight. I walked around a field with this thing for 20 mins, when I bought it at a car boot sale. It damn near killed me.

  • That Dreamcast on the left of the screen looks dangerously close to falling off that shelf, eeekk! Or is it an optical illusion?

"Pretty Green light", not quite as insane as the flashing L.E.D. on my cab' though, that thing is blinding, literally.

  • @28steryan It's an optical illusion. It's sitting on top of an Xbox, but in the poor light, you can't see that.

Is your blinding LED a tactical ploy by your cab? "I can't beat you with the game, so I shall beat you with my blinding bright light... Muahahahaha!"

  • @SteveBenway No I was just desperate to find a use for it & the cab' was the choice, it's truely evil, especially when it blinks blue for some god unknown reason, fortunately it doesn't hamper gameplay as it isn't in line of sight, It's roughly bouncing off you knees when playing sat at one of the stools, I should have put a cutting lazer in there activated by my voice when my opponent is beating me at Sensi', goodbye legs & balls sack, wa, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!

If you do R3PLAY this Y'r drop in.

  • The keyboard is easy to clean. It's a simple contact mechanism between the buttons and a circuit board underneath. Over time, however, dust and debris builds up in the gap. A good blast of compressed air should be all you need.

  • @psyjax2 That's exactly what I'm hoping :)

  • I love the style of this system! They should bring it back!

  • @silntdoogood They should... though perhaps a bit lighter :)

  • awesome review steve what are the chances of an x-box review

  • @theg00dnamesg0ne Chances are slim, at the moment. With so many old, rare or unusual systems to get through, the x-box is just a bit too recent, and common.

  • @SteveBenway the rare stuff brings in the subs lol can you just tell me what you think of it in short. i think its a very underrated system

  • @theg00dnamesg0ne Tisn't about the subs, as such. It's just that everyone and his dog knows what an Xbox is like, so there's no need to me to do a video about it :)

My own personal view... I like it more than I thought I would. It's technically more advanced than the PS2 and that shows in the games. It doesn't have Gran Turismo, which means I favour the PS2 over it, but it does have Halo, which I find an extremely impressive game.

  • @SteveBenway the sub thing was a joke anyway the x-box has a lot of gr8 games halo 2 is 10x better then halo 1 bungie (that makes halo) seems to make better games when they are rushed to make it because they spent more time on the marketing then they did makeing the game and when it to the last few months it was basicy shit we spent more time makeing demos then we did makeing levels id recommend you get fable the lost chapters and star wars KOTOR

  • I wish you all the best trying to get the thing to work properly - my father spent a good amount of time at one of his first proper jobs resoldering the contacts on a PET after every use - they aren't very reliable things (though, being metal cased, they'll probably cosmetically outlast most other computers of the same period).

  • @DdlyHeadshot Hmm... he must've had a bad one. These things are generally considered to be bullet proof and were very popular in education due to their rugged design and reliability.

Still... it's gonna take a bit of luck fixing the keyboard, coz I'm no electronics engineer. Should be fine if it's just dirty contacts though.

  • Awesome video - finally we get to see the PET in action!

I had no idea MOS were bought by Commodore - is that why so many companies chose the inferior Z80 over the 6502, thereby avoiding giving money to their competitors?

  • @DdlyHeadshot I may be wrong, but I think the Z80 was actually a superior chip. The 6502 was cheaper to make and some companies cloned it... if memory serves.

Probably shouldn't quote me on that... it's all a bit blurry.

  • Haha "Due to popular demand!! At least 4 of you have asked for this one...." - brilliant!

  • @saberblock *takes a bow* :)

  • That's a very informative review, I've never seen a PET in action. That keyboard must be built really solidly, much like the very famous IBM model M series keyboards that have been around for donkeys years. Does the system have a cooling fan? It made a pretty impressive humming sound when you threw the switch. You've said in the past the PET is really really heavy, I think Commodore did the right thing in designing it so the keyboard and screen swing up to allow access to the insides.

  • @Lachlant1984 The keyboard feels like it was made in a soviet era tank factory. Acually, the whole computer does.

    There's no cooling fan.

That hinged design is indeed very clever. I didn't even know about it till I did this video and spotted those two screws.

  • What a fantastic old computer, hope your back was ok after lifting it up !! I know those weigh a ton ?

Shame about the keyboard, probably just dirty contacts ?

I really love the look of those, it always reminds me of the intro for the 80's BBC Micro live programs with Fred Harris

Hope you get the keys sorted :)

  • @zombieAndy1979 It does indeed weigh a ton.

I'm hoping it's just dirty contacts. Gonna work along that route anyway. Compressed air first, and if no joy... pcb cleaner. Failing that, into the dish washer with it. (that really does work) :D

  • @SteveBenway I have to admit I've never thought of using the dishwasher, !?? :D Logically, I guess steam would do it ?

We use compressed air (canned air as I call it) on digital dye-sub printers at work, and that’s ok for dust and things but for electronics and contacts like on my synths I use IPA alcohol solution / wipes, and that works wonders....Tastes foul though :D

An excellent review though Steve, was nice to see inside the beast for the first time.

  • I really want to repair that keyboard for you and send you some Chiclets gum.

  • @Roadstar1602 Haha... that would be very cool :D

    Wait... no chicken nuggets?

  • I think there was/is a Cmd PET game called Robots or Daleks which Robotron is based on. The Pet has to be one of the most iconic computers of the late 1970s 80s, it just needs some square shoulderpads :)

  • @atombat I'm not at all up on what games were made for it, though I've come across a few on sites with downloads... gonna have to see if that's one of them.

  • @SteveBenway Haha, Ima bit mistaken, there was a Unix derivative game called Robots/Daleks which partly inspired Berzerk. Robotron was inspired by Berzerk and a CMD PET game called Chase... phew, I'm now going to lie down for an hour or 3..... :)

  • Great video Steve. Just like to say thanks for making me spit my drink all over the place with laughter when u said the motherboard was copyright 1900. Funniest thing I have heard in ages.

  • @Tudave LOL. 30 years from now someone will find your computer and wonder why the keyboard sticks and some keys don't work ;)

  • Clean the keyboard contacts with some pcb cleaner and it should be ok. Love to see it in action :)

  • @RomeoKGT Yeah, I have an action plan for the keyboard, getting gradually more drastic at each stage.

If compressed air doesn't do it, then I try pcb cleaner. If that doesn't work... it's going in the dish washer :D

  • huh? did you mod that LED light on yourself? my 8032 dont have a green LED.

  • @Borin81 The light was on it when I got it. I've never been sure if it's standard or not, but if it's a mod, it's a well done one.

  • @UKRetroGames I've had no software for it, so never felt the need to turn it on. While doing my research recently I found a program that'll convert .prg files for VICE to wav files, so i can put them onto tape and try loading them. Just need to sort the keyboard first. Fingers crossed :)

  • has it got any games?

  • @slenkar Games were made for it. I may or may not be able to get some running on it, if I can get the keyboard working a bit better.

  • Wow, made in the USA?? Don't see that anymore :'(

  • We used these in school many years ago.

  • @MaximumRD I never saw one in the real world till I found this thing in the mid 90s.

In school we had these things called Research Machines Link 380Z and 480Z.

They sell for a pretty penny these days too.

  • Sorry you lost me at Chicken Nuggets....im hungry...lol

Nice review...I find it funny that Commodore was allowed to get away with the cheating practices they practiced.

  • @kreeboy411 Mmmm... chicken :D

Yeah, I dunno how they got away with that either.

  • Oh wow I was JUST wondering what exactly a CBM was! I remember the PET over here and I didn't know it was basically the same thing just the name in Europe. I heard that Commodore "bought" all the chips from MOS and never paid them for it. LOL WTF Commodore. That's how you keep the prices low! So 80 is for 80 lines and 32 is for 32K? Neat naming scheme. That's so old school inside... I love it!

  • @MN12BIRD Jack Tramiel's business practices were always rather on the dodgy side... lol.

The naming makes sense on the 4000 and 8000 models, but I can't figure it out on the 2000 and 3000 models.

  • This was the first computer I ever used back as a kid. My Dad borrowed one from the university where he worked and I ended up spending most of Christmas on it back around 1980/81. I vaguely remember liking a game called Nightmare Park - would love to see that running on here if you get it working.

  • @9Pix9 If I ever get any games running on the thing, you can count on me uploading videos of them :)

  • Thanks for this Steve, a very informative video. Good stuff!

  • @HalfBlindGamer Thanks. I'm glad you liked it :)

  • Do you by any chance have one of the Commodore SX-64 "Executive its the portable c64 i remember once seeing a couple of them at car boot sales possibly in the 90.s i could kick myself now for not buying one .Great review by the way .

  • @paulb4uk I wish I did, but unfortunately not. Gamester81 and pcna both have one. The nearest I've come to one was at the computer museum at Bletchly Park.

  • Very nice. I really enjoy these system reviews. This reminds me somewhat of the computer terminals from Fallout 3 and New Vegas :)

  • @Ensor42 I haven't seen Fallout 3, but these things do appear from time to time on TV and in films, as kinda retro futuristic computer consoles.

  • @SteveBenway That machine really does have a unique look to it, mainly due to the sloped sides of the monitor, making it look a bit like the head of a retro futuristic robot!

  • @kevin12567 I'm thinking "Walter" from Judge Dredd in late 70s era 2000AD comic.

  • Interesting video. I've only vaguely heard of the Commodore PET before.

  • @Croooow111 I first heard of them when I was in school. The resident computer geek would sit reading the adverts and reviews in the middle of lessons. I think I was the only person besides him who was interested.

  • I really like these computer/console reviews you do. Very interesting.

  • @nexus000111 I'm glad you like them. I have *lots* more to come :)

  • @nexus000111 I have to agree Steve...These video reviews are some of your best work!

  • YES. One of my most-wanted systems and, in turn, one of my most-wanted reviews from you as well since you're one of the few people I know of who owns one and could make a nice video about it. Lovely machine, mmm. OH yeah, turn that things on, open that casing up, yeah that's what I'm talking about... *composes self* Man, that thing reeks of late 70's computer design, especially internally, so freaking rad. Thanks for the vid!

  • @phreakindee I aim to please :) I dunno if it's a US thing, and these things are more highly thought of over there, or if it's just me being desensitised to the thing, but I never really got very excited about the PET. The Sinclair ZX80 or Jupiter Ace on the other hand....

Actually, there are 2 machines that I dream of at the mo... the Camputers Lynx (looks at UKRetroGamer... make that video, you) and the Spectravideo SV318.

  • In 1983, my school had several PETs to teach the students BASIC. I have fond memories of programing my 1st "Hello world" program on it.

  • @MAMECADE They were apparently very popular with schools, coz they're built so solidly. This thing weighs a ton.

  • 7:40 You found a way to do "going under water" effect with your mic? Sweet! :-)

  • @newcoleco Yes... now guess... did I fill the room with water, or did I accidentally have my thumb over the camera's mic? ;)

  • @newcoleco lol!! Sounded like Steve was going snorkeling, or hitting the water bong :D

  • @newcoleco What does this have to do with the wonderful computer that is the PET? have you no balls?

  • @Pablos544 His comment is not connected to the PET but is relevant to the video. Now please do not be making insulting remarks to other commenters on my channel.

  • @SteveBenway 'have you no balls?' is an insult??

  • @Pablos544 It most certainly is where I come from.

  • @SteveBenway Where I come from 'have balls' simply means you are a good guy, but you should be more like a man. If anything it is a complement, not an insult. Anyway, why are you picking on me? I merely make an innocent remark to someone and you are picking on me. Other people have put the words CUM in capitals like that in CAPITALS, but you are picking on me. What's wrong with you???

  • @Pablos544 You asked a commenter here "have you no balls?" which is in no way a compliment. It's an unacceptable thing to be saying anywhere, and certainly not something I will have being said from one commenter to another in my channel.

If you think I am picking on you, it looked to me like you were picking on him.

The word CUM was in no way used in a manner that was aimed at any specific person in an offensive or insulting manner.

  • @Pablos544 I maintain that nothing offensive was meant by that remark 'have you no balls'. Further, I note that other people are making sexual words in CAPITALS, but I clearly see that you are leaving them alone. Your whole tone strikes me of some self-appointed dictator who wants to control everything.

  • @Pablos544 Lets keep this simple. What you said in response to newcoleco's comment was unwarranted. He had said nothing that justified you suggesting he "be a man." That was disrespectful.

The use of the word CUM was not inappropriate. It was a reference to misreading the words on the front of the computer.

    Context matters.

Every channel owner gets to decide what is acceptable conduct in their channel comments. This is my channel. So don't give me that dictator rubbish.

  • @SteveBenway Now, we can either draw a line under this right here, as no more needs to be said on the matter, or it can get blown out of proportion and end in a predictable manner.

  • @SteveBenway In this brief communication with me you have used the term/phrase "my channel" 3 times already. If you don't like being called dictator then maybe you should stop acting like one.

  • @Pablos544 I have used that phrase as you seem to believe that this is a democracy where everyone gets to decide how things are done. That is not the case.

You can do whatever you like on your own channel. That is the place where you can say whatever you like, and no-one can question you. On someone else's channel, you may not.

Now I've been very patient with you, but as you were not prepared to let the issue go... the result is obviously predictable.

  • Thought it said CUM on the front.

  • @retread01 Haha... there's just no answer to that :P

  • @SteveBenway Actually, now that I sit up and look at the screen properly, the contrast is better and it doesn't look like that any more. So it's nothing to do with me thinking about *that* all the time. Nothing at all... absolutely not...

  • It would be interesting to see what this system can do at one point.

  • @wrestletube1 So would I.

I've had a go at a couple of programs for it on an emulator, and got rather confused, but I'd love to get some games running on this beastie :)

  • *rubs nipples*

  • @WorthyouruniverseHD Oh baby!

Oh... wait.... that was yesterday's video.

  • @SteveBenway still time for kink and tech! lol good video as always bud. a brisk cleaning in that monster is in order for sure.

  • i share my age with this thing.

  • @oxxor77 So you do :)

I share my age with the pyramids... well... some other slightly younger pyramids, somewhere.
