Once the first one starts, you have an alternator putting out (on average) up to 100 amps. That's roughly 1400 watts of power. Assuming a nominal charge voltage of 14 volts. The average starter in a small car is roughly 1400 watts. Once the first car starts, all of the others just feed off of it.

Yes and no, the alternators in cars of that size are not very powerful, surely they could not put out enough power from an idling engine to start another car within 5 seconds, why do you think you have to wait a few minutes and or rev an engine to jump-start another?

@thelegendbullet937 There is a Volvo S40 MKII out there. That vehicle has an alternator rated for 140A at 14 Volts. That is a whopping 1960 watts of power. The starter on that same car is rated at 1200 watts. The starter is a standard gear reduction starter motor used on many of the other cars in that lineup. There is enough power coming out of that alternator to start another car. Also, you have to wait when jumping a car with a dead battery because a dead battery acts as a load in the circuit.

@thelegendbullet937 Ergo, you must charge the battery for a minute before there is enough current from the alternator and battery of the jumping car to turn over the starter motor in the car being jumped. Also, jumping cables are typically undersized and can't handle the massive currents required to jump a car but can handle charging a battery. Starting a car that has a moderately charged battery is much easier than jumping a car with a completely dead battery.

Granted, but there are many cars out there and that Volvo wasn't the first to start. Perhaps it's not a miraculous feat, but I don't think a Walmart brand battery will be doing this any time soon ;)

@thelegendbullet937 It doesn't take much out of a battery to start a car. As each car didn't have a battery in it, there was only a couple seconds of load on the battery each time a car started. In the end, it took roughly 20 seconds to start all of the cars one after the other. You can pull the fuse for your fuel injectors and hold your key in the start position for far longer than that without worry of hurting your battery. This is no different.

I didn't particularly care for the commercial / video, however, if you pause the video at exactly the 0:33 mark, you'll get an ever so cool shot of Gary with the smoke effect blowing past him and catching the light inside the illuminated cube.

Sort of reminds me of ghosts slithering on past Gary as he gets ready to tickle the ivorys with the iconic opening notes of "Cars".

before i say anything else let me point out I'm a Numan fan but it does him no favours to say he invented electronic music, because this is clearly untrue. and John Foxx didn't either while we're at it.

the likes of Kraftwerk, Jarre, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream etc were making electronic music in the whole decade before........and they didn't invent it either!!!!

1 car starts all cars? Of course this is just for advertising purposes! The horn and lights can be hooked up to any remote device manually, but there is no way to "link" all cars engine start because they use different OEM data protocols, and some they didn't have too much data control. Unless they used a "linked" RF controlled remote starter devices.

they didnt' all start at once, and when one car is started, it will start the alternator which will recharge the 12 volt battery at 14 or so volts

then if once the car is started, then that means for ever car that is started after that there will be an extra 2 volts, so its not like they are all started indiviually with one battery.

thats just my thoughts.
