Zoot could play! Could play fluidly on the cool, fast tunes, but he was at his greatest on the slow ballads like this one. No one could top his ballad playing. A genius who was with us for all too short a time....
Yes, I'd say it's pretty much a fact that he's in the Top 10--at least where tenormen are concerned. Just about the only others with greater name recognition are Getz, Trane, Rollins, Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Shorter and Henderson, etc.--even Ben Webster--are most likely in the 10 Ten as well, though not many folks other than jazz fans & musicians have heard of them. Zoot is one of the true Giants of Jazz history.
Wonderful tone and playing of Zoot!

I agree fully with soulconcern....the names you mention are top 10...but what I miss is Buddy Tate and Richie Kamuca in his small combo's....

Just read a piece saying S. Rollins was the greatest tenor player. BS! Great
jazz musicians respect the compositions and they SWING.
They don't stand there blowing lots of indistinguishable notes.
Don't know where he ranks, but Zoot has always been my favorite.
