Hey, I have a 1999 Dodge ram 1500 5.9 L V8 and its has the same trouble accerlation problems, if you can give me an advise to fix it, it will help me... I hope you can give me an answer...
@musicaromantica1991 Its probably the catalytic converters. You can try cutting them out and see if it helps the problems, although in most states you need them to pass emissions.
A battery pull should work temporarily, enough to pass emissions. The exhaust leak my be causing all the codes, so let me know how the JB weld does for your symptoms. Otherwise, I would put my money on a clogged cat, so I would go ahead and get that replaced.
Also...hit the cat with a rubber mallet lightly and see if you hear stuff bouncing around, if so..that usually means the cat is toast.
it runs great now. Just put a new transmission in it, but its still slow for a truck. Runs great, but slow. If I could get a tuner to remove the "death flash" it would gain probably around 50 hp

What error codes triggered your check engine light?
codyxcaution 2 years ago
It threw multiple/random cylinder misfire codes and cylinder 2,4,6,8 misfires. Nothing besides misfire codes, which made it very hard to diagnose
dothedeww 2 years ago
Damn..
Same exact thing.
My 01 dakota randomly downshifted damn near into first on a freeway, and the RPMs got a bit too high.
And now it keeps getting misfire codes.
Of course, thats IT.
(And yes, all random)

Yea. Just throw a high-flow cat on it...less than 400 dollars. The normal cats run damn near 1000.
I was also throwing misfire codes though when my transmission was on its way out, just had it rebuilt 2 months ago.

Huh. Well there is a crack in my exhaust before the cat (in fact, right on the weld to the cat)
In neutral, my Dak can't go past 4.5K and not "die" if I just let off the gas.
Any misfire, even at very high RPMs, after the tranny and cat work?
codyxcaution 2 years ago
No misfire at all after tranny and cat work.
Mine would rev fine in nuetral...but when under any load I got misfires at 2500-3000RPMs. I would definitly try cat first...doesnt sound like tranny.

Excellent info. Thanks.
One last question though.
I was rear ended a while ago, and I assumed that was what busted the weld on the cat and exhaust pipe.
Whats the likelihood, you'd say, that my cat is just clogged, and excessive exhaust pressure eventually busted the weld?
codyxcaution 2 years ago
I would say the weld busted in the accident....but your cat is probably clogged. Which engine do you have?
dothedeww 2 years ago
3.9L V6, Auto tran.
I reaaaally wanna avoid saying it was the accident, because that happen about a month ago.
The "mini-issues" with my engine, a long time ago. And only the bumper was dented, need a new tailgate and thats about it.
Since the break is before the cat, I was betting the o2 sensor is possibly reading atmosphere. And fucking up the air/fuel mix.
(Ie, idle in reverse, push gas and release just a tad, damn near dies, then comes back to life at a semi-high RPM)
codyxcaution 2 years ago
definitly sounds like cat to me.
Try putting some JB weld on the crack...depending on size..and see if that helps or hurts the problem.
It could be reading wrong because of the crack and causing a lot more problem...flooding the engine and stuff.

Great, thanks a bunch.
The tags are about to go out, and it auto-fails emission tests/smog.
Check engine light. It's constantly on.
So after I try doing a temporary seal on that, and testing it out.
You got any idea how to clear the codes? Will a battery-pull work, or will I have to short some pins on the connector? :P

One final thing..check to see if you have a black ring on your tailpipe end. Could mean oil leak.which would cause the clogged cat.
