I think the response of the elderly woman about whether she is proud to be German was a great example of "typisch Deutsch" that nobody mentioned: a knack for precision. Perhaps "stolz" just isn't quite the right word, for the reasons she mentioned- it wasn't something she had achieved and thus was not "stolz". The same precision that goes into German autos goes into German expression. I'm a germanophile, and admire that effort at being precise.
The segment on pride is so interesting. I've read that, because of Germany's history, which is filled with intense nationalism and some dark periods because of it, Germans can sometimes be really hesitant on being proud of their country. That isn't to say they aren't happy with where they live, but I think "proud" may have become a bit of a taboo. Of course, this is just based on what I've read. Can any Germans respond to this? Vielen Dank!
I think most of what you may have read is true. A german "pride" is not really existing. The generations after WW II were told that pride is "for the others, but not for us". Maybe because it showed us were false pride can lead.
Even modern generations are kinda suffering from the dark shadow of the Third Reich and got the urging feeling of apologizing for the cruelties in the Holocaust, although neither the parents, nor the grandparents of german teens took part in WW II
`proud would be the wrong word.` this is the idea. there are no borders in the world right now and being proud of who you are is something and being proud of being a part of a race is something. im learning german very slowly and i hope one day i can go there!
The part where the reporter asks people whether they're proud to be German really shocked me. I mean why do they hesitate to say " Yes we are proud to be German cause we love our country" ? It's almost as if they are ashamed of their country . Jesus such hospitality towards their own country . This is really sad. I am half Greek half Scottish and I certainly AM proud of being Greek and Scottish. I ,without question, love both of my countries and I would defo not be afraid to express this.
maybe it was good to make this video to get comments like yours. I do agree with you. I'm Polish living more than half of my life in Germany and I'm also proud and in love in both of my countries. And just like you, I will never have problems stating it.
im german and i love my country....but as a german person you have to be careful with things like that...because some stupid people in the world think that we drive to work with a tank and stupid things like that ( unfortunately a lot of american people.... )
@MrMarianna1701 I think we Germans do love our country. But if a German says he/she is proud to be German, there are thousands of people calling him/her a Nazi. That's why we just can't say things like that.
@MrMarianna1701 but that's because of our history, where extreme national pride and patriotism lead to a very very dark place where no german ever wants to go again, so even now we're still in shock70 years after the 2nd world war and holocaust, and everytime somebody wants to say "I'm proud to be german" they feel like they have to say: "and by the way: I am no racist or faschist" . our history still is present, and that's the way it is.
Im american and im proud of other people like myself that are civilized respectful good kind hearted intellectual people like myself that I may have the luck to come across in life from any nation rather than the average violent anti intellectual whores that are majority in all nations
Why not feeling proud of being German? I mean Germany is the best country in the EU in terms of economy, stability, productivity and long etc.. Scandinavian countries are also cool, but they're pretty small in terms of population.
are you proud to be german: no no no no no no yes no no no
if you would ask the questions to americans: yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes even though they are the most hated country in the world (im not racist against americans im even half american myself i just dont get the logical part)
@maxlen234 Well it depends. You can be proud of your countries accomplishments. Though the reason you'd get a lot of yes's here is because from the get-go we brought up in a nationalist and condescending toward other countries environment.
Germany's history surely plays a role in it, but I think the woman's response at 4:04 is the one I share (being Filipino-Canadian, not German). Pride is the wrong word because you don't embody your country. You HAPPEN to have been born in your country, so you say you're happy to live and to have been born there. But you can't be proud of it because you didn't build it. You can't say that you're proud that the US put the first man in the moon because you didn't contribute to it. Happy, not proud.
Now you see how beaten down the German people are. Makes me sad to see. They dare not be proud to be German, they have been systematically reprogrammed. Europe is being destroyed and to be German, Dutch, English is harder and harder each day. The man speaking at 3:54 is 100% correct and one day the people will rise up, it's only a matter of when.
yes :) if you would watch the video closely then you would see clearly: all people are really glad and honored to be German. But let me use a funny parallel picture: if you be a noble person (sort of aristocratic) then you would never say: "I'm proud to be an aristocrat" because it would be really pathetic. You would rather say: I know that my role brings a lot of obligations to me (because you are supposed to be at the top of your possibilities)
And this is what a lot of Germans are doing, they say: we need to think, to reflect, to understand! We need to be able to analyze and to comprehend our situation so that we will be able to act accordingly and wisely. I want to give you an example: I'm really proud that Germany is quiting it's nuclear program.
They could do it hands down and gain a lot of advantage but they are not doing this because they are the best and they take the role of the spearheads of the new regenerative energy solutions. It will cost Germany a lot - but Germany will contribute to the enormous afford to save the world and our future.

It's interesting to see how the older people in the interview were very hesitant to say that they're proud to be German, whereas the younger ones seemed to have less problems with that. I am part of that "younger generation" but I would still never say that I'm proud to be German. I like it and I'm proud of what Germany achieved in the last decades, but I would just feel uncomfortable saying that.
And why should I have to be proud of being German? All that matters is that I like it, and I do!

@Krautfee Erst wenn die Deutschen kein Angst mehr haetten mit dem begriff "Nazi" bezeichent zu werden koennten sie wieder stolz sein und das haetten sie vor 60 Jahre schaffen sollen!
I live in Ukraine (the former USSR) and I can tell, that here Germany respect practically with everything, at a possibility of 60-70 % of people would leave to live there immediately.
Let, that Germans dry and cold in dialogue also speak, but it is better than impudence, intemperance, fervour and bad manners.
Germany is a high quality, cleanliness, accuracy, diligence, BMW, Mers, medicine, beer, Drindl.....
I am a foreigner who lives in Germany. I've been living here for two years now, and I tell you what - to those watching this video - Germany is THE BEST COUNTRY in the world. Clearly, people are still suffering from their past, but if you learn the language try to interact with Germans, you won't find it difficult to have fun and start enjoying their lifestyle. It is a shame they cannot say they are proud without hesitating- or perhaps they're just modest! ^_^
it's a general opinion that saying that you would be proud to be some nation and not the other is mildly speaking outdated and thus naive. In fact only children and simple people would tell you that they are "proud to be German" without any reflection.
@MyMagicalTravels i notice it too: it could be cause Germany's history or just because they think it's nonsense to be proud for what i have no merit. i could be happy to be italian (in my case) but i'm not necessarily proud of it: i'm italian, american ecc that's it! I can be proud only for results i get working, not for what i inherit
If you have heard often enough: "you are german? all German are fucking Nazis!" from people from other countries, it isn't easy to be proud. The past plays a major role in the art, like other coutries see Germany. When I think of what happened once in the past then I am ashamed. But I think it says nothing about Germany today. Our country has many good sides too. I hope someday the Germans are not longer condemned for what their ancestors have done.
@MyMagicalTravels how can you be proud of your country? it wasn't your choice to be born there. its not your accomplishment that its one of the better countries. i can't say im proud to be german. i could have been born in poland or france. who knows. would i then say "im proud to be polish"?. there is no global and true honest answer. to be proud of beeing german would be like beeing proud of the wether. its nonsense and no good.
I think at 2:15, he says (in a typical Northern English way) "those things what they wear" and it's been transcribed as "...that they wear." Funny! (I may be wrong here)
Nice video... I thought the sincerest comment was the girl that said it was cool to get help from the state... and the woman who said she is proud of the own doing so she couldn´t be proud of being german... I lived in Germany... the people were very open and tolerant... but being a south american I don´t think we communicated on the same level, ever... german is a hard language very different from spanish... I would love to go back again and have another crack at it though... nice work!
I find it really interesting that many of them said that "proud" is not the word to use for this situation. I used to talk to a german boy and he explained that to me. I think that they are right when they answer this question saying they "are glad they had been born there". Germans are clever people. I wish I can learn this language fast and be able to communicate better and learn from them. Thanks for all these videos :)
Tolles Video, so was ist immer total interessant! .. für Ausländer und auch Deutsche :) Und obwohl ihr so viele verschiedene Menschen befragt hat, kam letztenendes doch überall etwas ähnliches raus!

They aren't proud because of their past history, a lot of my German friend said that!!

@MyMagicalTravels
