I was watching this film recently in its original length, not cut for Commercial Television, i was suprised about just how dark and brutal it was.
In many ways it was far more ambitiouse than the series.
As for it being "Americanised", it was made by Amicus at Sheperton Studios at a time America had no idea what Dr.Who was - the principal venue to see this would have been at the Drive - In, it wasn't made for America.
I LOVE these old movies - I just wish they'd gone on to produce the 3rd and final film in the series. Peter might not be 'canon' but he was one cool Dr !
Peter Cushing was the only Doctor Who because when he meets the character played by Bernard Cribbins in Invasion Earth 2150 he introduces himself by stating: "I am Doctor Who!" No other doctor ever called themselves that... they just referred to themselves as "the doctor!"
hey good vid where did u get the full theme for the 8th doctor ive got it but i only got the 2 seperate ones, the one and the start of the TV movie and at the end
.... Some people think that Sara Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) is the Doctors longest running assistant. But PC. Tom Campbell / Wilfred Mott / Bernard Cribbins
has been with the Doctor on and off for twice as long.
I always felt that Cushing's Doctor was never really given a chance, much like Paul McGann's. But just like McGann's, his version of the Doctor is a joy to watch despite so little screen time!
@TheCohagen Blimey dude calm down, if you didn't like him, fair enough. That's your choice. I'm not willing to get involved in an argument over something so trivial, so good day.
WOTAN in "The War Machines" referes to the doctor as doctor who but this was acknowledged as an error by the writing staff. Too many writers are responsible for slight mistakes in continuity such as this.
If from 1963-2010 that was the only character to refer to him as Doctor Who it is safe to say it not his name.
I am running on this "doctor who" is an aged metacrisis doctor some time after Rose dies (maybe with his daughter also) leaving him to care for barbra and susan his grand daughters. Longing for his younger days and lingering memories of travel he builds a makeshift tardis that at first test takes him back to the 1960s. It is in the 1960s he is able to get access to parts to finish his tardis. Remember Bad Wolf bay world had cybermen but no Dalaks as of yet.
this would make the whole two movies fit into the cannon story line. But take this one step further, the Peter Cushing doctor's earth does not encounter dalaks until 2150, this means no one remembers them. COULD this also be AMY PONDS Earth also?
And one further point the "new" Dalaks from VOTD look like the Dalaks from these two Movies... The Eleventh doctor said the cracks were from two realities never ment to touch.
there's no question in my mind that success of Peter Cushing as Doctor Who convinced the BBC that british viewers would accept another actor(besides William Hartnell)as The Doctor and that he didn't have to look, act or dress like the original.Peter Cushing after all was the 2nd Doctor before Patrick Troughton and just as wildly different.
I herd there was gonna be a 3rd film and there was gonna be 2 doctors in it, as by then Patrick Troughton was the Doctor and a lot was known who the Doctor was by then. So a film with 2 Doctors in it was an idea to be made to explain how the Doctor regenerates
All you have to do is pretend that the Doctor was protecting himself when he said he was an inventor as no one would have believed him if he said he was from another planet as well. The Tardis was enough to try and believe in, let alone the Doctor as well.
So what if this film was, as someone hinted, Americanized? Perhaps less focus was put on the Doctor, who he was, etc. however, this was still great. The Daleks were made larger than life, the spaceship very erie, much action, the money spent made a difference. It helped make the Daleks a household name. Commercial success came as a result....and underneath it all, I'm sure it was desired by the originators of Dr. Who.
this (and it's former 'doctor who and the daleks) was an unoffical movie made by ammacus films. peter cushing doesn't count as a doctor as the films wern't made by the bbc.
@chronozoan And that's if he could stay, ahem, focused long enough to pull off an entire movie. He was getting pretty irrascible towards the end and flubbing lines like nobody's business. Bless his hearts.
ive just had an idea. I know the human 10th Doctor cant regenerate, but what if he did one day, built a crude version of the TARDIS at work in Torchwood and went off to the 1960's, had another family and stuff, then met the Daleks?? Imagine that was him!!! Peter Cushings Doctor!!!!!!!!!! That would be cool, i mean, they are both on Parralel Universes. Just something i was imagining but i like the idea of it
To be honest, it wouldn't be difficult to fall out with Rose. If I was the Doctor and had a baby with her, I'd be applying to the Jeremy Kyle show to prove it wasn't mine.
@OwenDWF I thought what could have been interesting is the episode where the 11th Doctor when he meets Nixon if someone in the White House called UNIT and found out from them that they knew of a odd person known as "The Doctor" but it was a rather short fellow with a Beetle's hair cut. :)
How does one get their hands on this film?

Oh, how primitive we were back then
Still Peter Cushing does a very good job as the Doctor.

The woman Loise (Jill Curzon) is about the same age as PC. Tom Campbell. (Bernard Cribbins)
As we all know, later PC Campbell had to change his name and leave the police force, as a gang of international criminals put a ransom on his head.
After leaving the police force he became a news paper seller and change his name to Wilfred Mott.
His granddaughter Donna Noble, later reintroduced him to the Doctor 40 years later.

Lovely jubbly.
The films were the American producers' ideas on dumming down the concept of an alien Doctor and making him more family orientated.
Hmmmm ; ) Still very watchable though and the Cush did a good job with the material he was given.
Check out the "Christmas Cracker Dalek" in eBay's search engine.
