  • I think the name should be changed to Kendo in a Prison Gym.

  • Would you consider re-doing the off-voice? It's really low volume compared to the background sound. Some words aren't intelligible

  • To be honest 90% of it isn't audible...

  • I wish I had their enthusiasm when I was their age! Those kids are great! Thanks for the upload ^^.

  • "...the children request to spar with him..."

I remember teaching karate to kids. 95% of them were unenthusiastic. During sparring class I'd spar them tournament style. The winner would have to face me. The whole class was fearful and I barely used one-tenth of the effort on them that this man used with his students. Funny how different the mentalities are. I'd rather teach these Japanese kids.

  • As opposed to what? kids stoning in the california? going to schools with gun detectors in new jersey? doing meth in arkansas or stuffing themselves with burgers and kfc?

  • The concept of Kendo is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the Katana (sword). Kendo teaches me how to become a better person. I really appreciate it.

  • Someone said kendo is selfdefence.. Do you actually walk on the street with bogu on and shinai on your hand?

  • In Japan, it is often said that kendo's armor that is called "bougu" smell.

    So they must smell,too.

In fact, many Japanese dislike kendo.

  • @49fy9jlzdahr

The worst thing about Bogu in Japan is it never dries because it is so humid. The good thing though, is that shinai don't break as often because of the humidity. The bogu doesn't stink THAT bad though, especially if you keep it well cleaned out. The kote (Gloves) are really the only piece that get super super stinky

  • future of japanese kendo champions, they have to do this in order to stay on top in kendo. devotion to the sport, culture and japan. imho.

    loved the video!

  • Wow! Kendo looks like alot of hard work! But it also looks like alot of fun!

  • tried it yesterday for the first time for like an hour, now i couldnt raise my right arm,and whole body is sore. its a very serious sport

  • you shouldn't hit with your right hand. your power should be in your left hand. If you can't raise your right arm it's not good!! ^^

  • will be better when you cannot raise your left arm...

    Bad, bad right arm! ;)

  • I believe its a beautiful thing for a child to learn martial arts as long as the teachers are teaching moral and self defense. Not violence. (Intent of doing harm out of selfish means.) It saddens me many people believe self defense and violence are the same thing. The diffrence is what is the intent of the heart or soul. I'm all for self defense but I despise violence.

  • @taoistwarrior Well Kendo isn't really a self defense class.. In my opinion it's a more intense version of fencing because of the multiple strike points you slash at rather than jab. It's more for dueling situations than self defense.. Aikido is more self defense if that's what your looking for.

  • kendo is hard sometimes

  • id like to try it, but no idea where to in my area lol

  • try in university clubs

  • it would have been interesting if an instructor was a prison inmate haha

  • that would have been hilarious.

  • i would love to learn kendo someday

  • go find a dojo neer you, even far, you wont regret

  • I love watching little kids do kendo. It's the cutest shit ever.

  • lol they bully little kidz -.- hilarious

  • You should try it out. It is a very subtle and evolved art form. My major comment would be that wacking someone with a stick is a bit different than slashing.

  • Now, I want to make clear that I know nothing about MA, and that also goes for kendo, so I will be most likely be speaking straight out of my ass..

    -But isn't is kindda shit?

Been watching many kendo movies now on youtube, and while I see it can have a great offense (Judging from my view it always goes for the head, and therefor a quick straight kill) but lacking defenss so very badly? It seems to me that they always leave their torso weide open, and their hits are always blocked. Am i wrong?

  • matenne2, i would assume because sport kendo is, as you said, mostly revolving around going for a quick straight kill....

if you want to learn more practical japanese sword fighting though, learn some kenjutsu under a good koryu...like kukishin ryu for example. that covers more of the stuff your asking about.

  • Yes and no, I have trained Kendo for over 20 years to have an effective "Do" torso cut is hard to do and takes skill and timing, it is hard to really appreciate kendo if you have not trained in it. It wold be like if I had to describe figure skating, I sure what I would say would be shot down by someone who does skating. You should give kendo a go its fun and very hard.

  • Damn I'm not half as good as those kids. Then again I've only been at it for about 7 months.

  • maybe its my computer but the narrators audio seems really bad, is it just my speakers or are other people getting this too?

  • Same here buddy.

  • Been doing Kendo for about seven months, its hard, and the training is tough. But found that Kendo is more about knowing yourself and how far you can push yourself to the limit!! Its fun and a great way to make new friends!! Great vid!!

  • Yeah. Kendo hurts a lot. Lol.. just came back from kendo right now and got like 4 bruises. D=.. But Kendo is great, Its how i stay fit and its really fun.

  • hehe, i'd say the only spot you've gotta worry about bruising is your wrist; kote bruises can last awhile! ^^

  • don't forget your side

remember those do uchi that missed it's intended target lol

  • loll theres this girl (russian) shes really vicious.. she cant control her hit and she hits some random spot on my body without the armor (bodu , hogu).. she hits my arms when i dodge her kote. she hits my neck or my shoulders when she wants to hit men and she hits my legs for do.. i come back with like 20 bruises from her every time i go to kendo.. lol

  • someone once advised me, on a shiai, to always hit girls slightly above the regular DO area.. (yes, on their breast).. cause shinpans tend to favor girls.

hahaha Kendo has an obscure side.. definetly

  • and you are crazy.

  • dirty tricks don't belong in the a good shiai.

  • yup.. lets save them for keikos..

  • these kids are half as old as i am but already as fast. depressing, somehow. however, i think it's a good thing for children to start kendo early.

    thanks for uploading.

  • This is a great video, thanks for putting it up. I've always liked Kendo but never had either the patience nor the funds to learn, oh well maybe next year lol

  • it's the funds for me..=_= aish... but I WILL learn this!

  • I wonder if this guy has any idea that he is watching ai kakarikeiko And not a raging battle...

  • awesome stuff, i wish we had budo activities in our schools

  • awesome but i think the dude needs his voice dubbed

  • subbed I think

  • Nice video, thanks! Unfortunately the voice is a little bit unclear... like run through some low-pass filter.

  • Kendo made up much of the best of my memories from when I was a teenager as well.

I really would like to go back. :)

  • why don't you go back if it's not too much to ask?

  • As an American teen myself, practicing kendo was one of the greatest life changing experiences I've had so far. It just makes you realize how our society (young people in general) are really just plain rude and shietty sometimes.

  • I know what you mean man, kendo is really something else, a discipline like no other you know

  • ???? so you do practice? im sure i just replied to a comment of yours stating kendo holds no insight into actual defence and combat. I now feel a little stupid for telling ya not to answer questions without knowing the answers, sorry bout that. But now my interest is peaked. I know all to well Kendo is about self growth and those who see kendo as "fighting an opponent" miss the point all together, but do you really think there is no combat skill to be learned at all?

  • Reminds me about how on average the Japanese kendoists are usually better than the American kendoists.

  • what? it sodoesn't suggest every japanese kid goes through this

just how many kids do u see in this vid

  • This video gives the impression that every Japanese kid goes through this and it's some sort of grueling challenge. Not that it isn't challenging. But the kids do it because they want to. Because it's fun.

  • I was first under the impression these children were in the Japanese prison system, though it's not a bad idea. We should have these prison children dojos here in the United States.

  • good! we mollycoddle our kids in North America way too much. We could learn a thing or two about facing adversity etc.

  • Hoooly dang, those children has got some good stamina... :o

  • i think the title "prison" a little bit exaggerating. Personally, that video actually reminds me of my own training session. The sensei that showed how to do men-uchi reminds me of how i teach my kouhais.

i could hardly say their training session was as harsh as in a prison. it's quite normal.

speaking of "killer" sensei, one of my sensei sometime went on a tsuki frenzy when one his pupil did a tsuki on him..lol...

he had his pupil nailed to the wall lol

    don't tsuki ur sensei..especially 7 dan

  • it's hard to train in japan , but you know ,, i sometimes have to do this training too , maybe not that hard but it only makes you better , you don'tc have to say prison ,, back in the times of samurai it was even moooore hard

  • It was a prison. Why should I not call it one. Wouldn't that just be lying?

  • so, the children were prisoners ,, look how young they are

  • Listen again. That is not what I said. It is always good to understand before commenting.

  • Hy! I was training there. This dojo is in Fuchu Prison (Tokyo). When my sensei said that we will go to training a prison I was amused. If you want to be a policeman or jailer in Japan you must practice Japanese Budo (Kendo or Judo). That's the reason police stations and prisons had a dojo. Kids started Kendo in 5-6 years old than they training every day in school at morning and in the nearest dojo of his house in afternoon.

  • @fightjapanrc more hide videos man he is the man

  • the term prison kendo gave me the impression of tough prisoners totally roughing eachother up , i think that's what he meant

  • kendo isnt for the shallow minded. I would see no point for anyone who doesnt have a sense of truth ti take kendo.

  • a prison as a dojo... sounds pretty ominious... but its pretty big... i like it! ^_^

  • this looks like alot of fun...too bad i live so far away from any kendo club =(

  • I actually really like the building that they practice in. I would like to run a dojo like that one day.

  • Martial Arts does have a good effect on the young. I recall in my early Tae Kwondo training, I learned discipline and politeness, things that have carried on with me for some time. When or if I have a child, I think I would definitely enroll them into a martial arts training. Heck, I'd enroll them into Kendo, as it looks so fun and brutal. A good combination to train up a strong little soul into a good, honorable person.

  • Not only on the young, but also on the older ones... :) I started Kendo when I was in my early 20's, and it has definetly developed me into a more balanced, disciplined, determined and calm person. My recommends!

  • OGkrs ,have you missed out on your spiritual training? Have yu ever heard the saying " It's not the dog in the fight ,It's the fight in the dog". Kendo trains the spirit as well as the body. It is a strong spirit that will see you through any kind of conflict. We learn many things in kendo that one could apply to a "street fight" . Generally speaking we don't go around getting into street fights . If that is why you study martial arts be very careful.

  • wear a sword with you

  • lol

  • Man, people practice kendo for other purposes than ass-kicking in the street. Go ask a foot ball player how he would use his ball in street fighting.

    Jeez

  • yah seriously, if your practicing something only for the ability to hurt someone, just buy a gun. The practice of Kendo is for much deeper and much more significant things.

  • Or for someone who loves to compete.

  • Mentally they're much better prepared for a fight than most people, including most professional fighters are. Kendo is excellent for developing mushin and fudoshin.

  • Why train an unarmed MA when I can just get a gun OGkrs? You don't need to do a MA to be able to use it on the street, some people actually ENJOY what they do. Kinda like you know, having fun playing football, baseball, or any of those other things that are "useless".

  • My kendo sensei can scare you by just staring at you. That is definately very useful.

Ya Kendo is not for the weak minded either.

  • Hey! We get to see Jindra again! That's great:)

  • Robert... How were you able to meet all these great people? You are very resourceful... I like the theme of your videos...

  • Thanks for the support. Interesting people are normally connected to other interesting people so I don't actually do very much!

  • Thank you Robert. Don't you speak Japanese yet?
