Hey Gritgirl...I don't support the Conservatives or Harper's handling of the crisis. However, this work is completely unfair and partisan. No economists were predicting the major fallout of Wall Street, but a recession was likely, the government didn't even deny that in early 2008. No one was predicting the collapse of financial institutions seen in late 2008. That event, which has made this recession so difficult, was never predicted.
Thank GOD for the liberals when they secured our banks! It's really the only thing Harper is proud of and he had nothing to do with it!! They are pitiful arent they! Especially this nut!
Is anyone really surprised about one of Harper's people lying? That's' what Adolph Harper's government does, lie and sell out Canadians to foreign interests and banks.
No Canadian tax money to the banksters and the International Mob Fund!
Ive never laughed so hard. For some though, the recession works in there favour. If you take a look at american history more millionaires were formed in the great depression then anytime in history. Check out our videos, gives some insight as to what were doing
In all do respects all those economists only said something till late 2008 well into the collapse. Jims failure was in not understanding US economics and how there economy would effect us so much.
The real warnings were made by the controller general of the united states (head accountant) or global investors like Peter Shiff of Euro pacific capital , DR. Ron Paul who have been telling us this since 2005.
yeah right. the economist predictions are all after the start of the market collapse and recession. those aren't predictions those are weather reports in the middle of a hurricane.
castorcanadien, you keep saying that Iggy is not a true Canadian because he had to spend a couple of decades outside the country to improve his career. Does this mean that Wayne Gretsky is not a true Canadian either?

Liberal CrapFromHell attack ads .... because they have that adscam stench to them. Must have been paid with brown envelope$.
If the government is so bad, then it's Ignatieff's duty as a true and loyal Canadian to defeat the Harper government at the first opportunity, and have an election to give Canadians the opportunity who they want to govern the country .. Harper or Ignatieff.
But why did Ignatieff force the Liberal-controlled Senate to pass the Stimulus Budget? Is he a "Blue" Grit ??
Keep going to the AdScam well, but I'm afraid that you'll find that the well is quite dry now. If the Conservatives try and use it in their attack ads, I'm sorry to say they'll get eaten alive because no one besides the Tory true believers actually care anymore.
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!! Ignatieff was more pro-American, pro-Bush, pro-Iraq war, pro-Republican than Harper ever was ... and Iggy proved that when he was a "we Americans" Harvard professor sucking up to the warmongers.
Now the Liberals have made Ignatieff their great new leader and will be trying to sell him as a "Canadian" ... that's like putting lipstick on a pig ...LOL
funny - not one of those quotes has the word "global" in it. Does being a Grit mean not being able to read English as well? Or are these videos being made in Quebec office of Mr Iggy and Mr Kinsella, in that part of Canada where English is verbotten (pardon my French)? Curious minds want to know.
Anotherroadkill: Not one of those quotes has the word "global" in it? Not even the very first example, that reads "we believe the global economy..."?
If you look closely, you'll see that the fourth word is "global". While you, laughingly, are hamfistedly criticizing others for not being able to read, and lashing out at Quebec, perhaps you might also consider some remedial coursework in your (apparent) first language. Haha, you must feel like such a tool! Oh man, too rich. "Funny" indeed.
Global economy, not global recession, which seems to be GritGirl's issue. Same TD report (page10) says Canada GDP will grow .7% and economic activity will expand at 1.2% and world recovery will tak ehold in 2009. Not that gloomy is it? No sky falling according to the TD at that time.
Bear Stearns needed federal cash in March '08 followed by Lehman Brothers going belly up in Sept '08... so predicting a recession by that point was not surprising. This vid amounts to a cheap shot at Mr. Flaherty which will work on most people who do not read the newspaper.
The last election was a sham. The reasons for calling it were non- existent as Mr. Harper passed as many things through the house as he could introduce. He was never defeated, he walked away or rather 'jumped ship' as always with the hope of greener pastures . By doing so he knowingly hung Canada out to dry.
Yeah but they(Jim and Steve) accomplished what they set out to do, get another mandate, by lying and having an election before things went wanky.
Problem is this time around, people have the bad taste of Jimmy and Steve in their mouths and ain't going to swallow what they say quite as easily as before.
Not to mention the opposition can can now talk in two official languages...
Your point is valid, but let's remember it was not difficult for him to accomplish what he did having walked away from a minority government & to spend $300 million on a needless election while predicting - another minority government..
Is it any wonder we are $15 billion in deficit even before uttering the word 'stimulus' with spending habits like this?
Uh, you think predicting this 'global recession' in October 2008 counts? You can't be serious! Half of the world's stock markets had already plunged >50% by then. Anyone with an IQ over 50 would have suspected that we may have a future recession at that point in time.
In 2006 the USA was showing signs of a housing bubble, Flaherty relaxed credit standards in Canada and introduced the 40 year mortgage to Canada. 40 year mortgage ended 1 day before the election, October 15, 2008. Coincidence? Bush, in 2004 bragged about the largest rise in home ownership. Re-elected, he's become the president responsible for the largest amount of foreclosures, ever.
When you consider 75% of Canada's exports go to the US, Jim should have seen what was on the horizon.
Don't forget those Portages were $0 down and fully insured when they go belly up by CMHC( Central Mortage & Housing) .They are a Crown organization so TAXPAYERS are on the hook for potenially BILLIONS over those two years.
It's a small wonder he was so quick to 'buy' the banks 'toxic loans' because this Government under wrote them with our tax money.
i dont thing sept of 08 was a prediction ,i knew the economy was going to shit in the summer, and so did most people keeping up on world events.tell me who predicted this recession in 2007 or even summer of 08 if u want to impress me!,not the liberals, ndp or green party ,nor the bloc
Let's be fair and objective here, Flaherty did say that it was a "global recession", and the only one of your quotes actually predicts that.
But there's also the case to be made that Flaherty was clearly just using an colloquialism when he said "no one", even if he did drive the point home. Most people when saying "no one" in this way, actually mean "very few people". :P
Regardless, he was and is wrong, I just think there are better (and less partisan) ways to show that to people.
You decide to put up quotes which were from the time when it was actually realized that there was going to be a recession? You Idiot. The stock market crashed in october 2008 you dont think everyone after that would have said there is going to be a recession?!?!
yes he's lying but those quotes are way to close to the recession. It's way too late by then (Spt-Oct 2008??) We needed someone to predict this way before this.
No. I'd say legalize marijuana, then see what the open market would do for it. Don't try to tax it, because then it will become just like everything else that the government taxes..... RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE! gasoline, cigarettes, income tax.....

It is a shame that Flaherty had to waste time in front of an unelected Senate. Rubber stamp the legislation from the elected body and let's get the stimulus out the door.
You didn't happen to read the other economists who scrolled on the video by who said nothing about a minor recession?
I've got to say though it takes a great deal of chutzpah to still say that Flaherty was right when he was so clearly proven not to be correct in this claims in this video.
Can you explain the "world of difference" between Dion saying we are going into a recession and Harper saying we are going into a recession?
I'll give you a hint: one ridiculed the other for saying it during the election, then promptly regurgitated the exact statements following victory.
Conservatives have no brains and no balls; all they're good at is manipulation and spin. You know something's wrong when a party that champions itself as "economists" don't know what "economics" is.
Right on, the two at the top are running the economy, both "economists" by trade, and can't figure out if the USA runs out of $, that our economy based on 75% exports to them ill hurt our bottom line.
