@roberaith Nah its done too often plus ill risk getting fined by the cops. not worth it really. not to mention someone will hunt me down and kill me if i destroy their ear drums.
One time I was behind an S-10 pickup which had a Leslie S-3L under its tonneau cover and a full air suspension; he irritated me with the horn and constantly raised and dropped the rear of his truck while it was going down the road.
@douro20 that would be frustrating im sure. this would be classed in my opinion as deliberate misuse of a locomotive horn. and im sure air suspension also
@ww5rm Well, tell Amtrak about the K5LA thing, because all of their equipment has that horn.
BTW: His use of K5LA is NOT misleading, your use of it is misleading. The title clearly says "K5LA LOCOMOTIVE HORN"! The FCC should have never put that call sign out for someone, because it's just begging for trouble. Trains aren't going to disrupt HAM radio crap, and in my opinion, HAM radio is the dumbest thing ever created.
K5LA is a Ham Radio Call Sign issued by the FCC to a Ham Radio Operator in Elpaso, TX. Don't get caught using it over the radio or the FCC will fine you for it because nobody else in the world can use it but the person it was issued to!! Do as you wish as this is only just a warning and a heads up so you know. I tried to post a link showing who it was issued to but you tube wouldn't allow it. =]
@aussietraindriver Think again I talk to people in Aussie on my Ham Radio all the time. The International Telecomunications Union governs world wide communications and people cause Harmful Interference from all over the world here in the USA! China has broadcast stations that run on Ham Radio frequencies but they could care less and most likely do it on purpose. But the countries we have agreements with or are our allies we work with each other and comply with each other. =]
@ww5rm Oh and just so you know I have also talked to Astronauts on the International Space Station. Why you tube wont allow links I don't know but do a search for NA1SS which is the Ham Radio Callsign of the ISS. Tons of things to do and people to talk to over Ham Radio. Watch the you tube videos on it if you get time. The world is alot smaller than we sometimes think mate. =]
@ww5rm Randy, calm down. I don't think any of these guys are running around pretending to be Floyd. Seen you a couple weeks ago on APRS when you came thru McAlester,OK heading North. Stopped here for dinner right? I agree, the world isn't as big as we think.
Airpowered erection if you ask me. I do compresses gases for work. Thinking about runnin mine off of Compressed nitrogen with a regulator. 2,500psi in the cylinder. Regulator. Lever ball valve.
@5kcsqt Dont go over 150psi, also i have heard the density of nitrogen over oxygen through these horns changes the note also. just be careful with pressure's or you will damage the horn.
@RDCattleRancher Unsure of colours, were painted 2 years ago, but was auto touch up spray packs and baked in oven at 80c, paint will have to be blasted off now if i ever repaint them as it is baked to the aluminium. similar to painting a car with 2pac
@aussietraindriver ...no not this one, this one is very nice....I'm talking about the ones we have here in Victoria Australia on the V/Locity passenger trains, they are just one single pathetic honk like you would here at a football match from a spectators hooter.
@rhondaw1 yeah they are pathetic. i hear they asked for a high and low note horn, ie a main horn and a workshop horn like loco's but they put a high pitched horn and lower pitch horn on instead thats why they are so squeaky. not iseal for high speed, lower notes travel further ahead of the train, thats why the multi chimes were introduced, to cover various frequencies in one blow.
@cactuarizamoron As far as im aware most of them use K5's in various frequencies, usually the LA version. i think some also use Nathan P5's also in varous configurations.
@claimless No because the horn was originally a K3HA from Union pacific railroad, and the other 2 horns and manifold were bought later ad no idea where they are from.
@claimless No because the horn was originally a K3HA from Union pacific railroad, and the other 2 horns and manifold were bought later and no idea where they are from.
@aussietraindriver Ohh, Okay. So everything's just this random mix of bells and manifolds? If that's the case, it sounds really good and pretty much in tune for something with mixed components.
@claimless well yes and no, the extra 2 horns were tuned to american 3A and 5 to sound the original K5LA notes. its as close to original as ill get it without any more mods.
I work at a operating railroad museum and we have a lot of trouble with these very expensive horns getting stolen off of locomotives. Not only are they very expensive to replace, but when they are stolen the locomotive is inoperable. I very much regret the popularity of horn collecting.
@WBDE You cant blame horn collectors, its the thieves that know thier value that steal them, genuine collectors get horns the proper way!. they need to be mounted with tamper proof bolts, security cameras are also a cheap and effective security measure, I once stole a horn off a tourist locomotive when i was 16, i felt so bad i replaced a single chime horn with a 5 chime that i bought. but i got to hear it, and i bet they still wonder where they got that horn. I never stole a horn again.
@Redbirdfan33 Locomotive horns mounted to vehicles for use in road traffic is pretty much illegal everywhere world wide. But in saying that they could be mounted to a vehicle for display purposes and sounded at the correct location. using these horns on the road would more than likely get you into noise violation trouble of some type.
are those real locomotive air horns? if so, where can i get them? ill pay top dollar...but the ones i would really like if i dont get teh K5LA are the ones thats on the MP36-phS...i forgot the series
@bonnevillessei Yes they are real locomotive horns, I sell them at my website or email me at railchime@hotmail.com and let me know what you want. where are you from?
@aussietraindriver i reside in illinois. i have to wait to get my money right to get one because the site i saw yesterday...wow, it was a nice grip...but its well worth the price for that kind of noise. im waiting to purchase my truck first then ill email you the info. but yes ill check out ur webpage.
@bnsf4 Im not sure of its exact tuning but the number 3 and 4 bell has been machined to play the correct notes, as per original tuning which was, B major 6th: (D#,F#,G#,B,D#). do you have a video of your horn? I will do a run by soon. need to get my camera repaired.
@jbwebster The spot im at in this video is the site of an old rail yard that is now closed, has not seen a train since the mid 80's there is still rail line in the grass.
Nice to hear some Aussies appreciate good, loud train horns. Not like those poms and their pathetic little tooters, right? They don't even sound them for each crossing by standard practice. I live along the WSOR tracks in Wisconsin, USA, and BNSF4 is right they do use a lot of K5LAs, but they are only one of many RRs that does so.
I agree with you, some of our newer diesel rail cars and electric multiple units are fitted with european horns that are 2 notes only and can only have one note sounded at once. not a pleasant whistle by any means. compared the the U.S multiple chime horns.
All P3 have a squeal at low pressure. but in modern rebuild kits they include 2 stainless steel diaghrams which eliminates this early P series squeal. i bought a rebuild kit but left the second diaghragm out for the classic squeal.
no no WSOR is Wisconsin And Southern Railroad. i was just sayin because that horn is tuned exactly like all of the WSOR engines! check it out the video is called WSOR train JMR
In the U.S.A they are used in various form on nearly all railroads. In australia they have only become popular on the east coast in the last 5 or so years. they have been on iron ore locomotives for many years as they are directly shipped from the U.S and are factory fitted with K horns or P horns.
Thats what I was intending to get at. For BNSF4 to assume that this horn came from WSOR by the way it was tuned would be ludicrous, when dozens of railroads throughout North America have the K5 varient of horn.
The A200 is only a single note horn. although i have never heard one in person i blelieve they are sweet. The leslie S5T's are a great old horn too. i am rebuilding one now.
