  • I took my cat to the vet after I saw this video and doing a bit more research. He's been having problems for a year off and on, and had been misdiagnosed. He's been on medication for two weeks and I see a DRAMATIC improvement. Thank you for posting this!

  • How much is "Predizone"? After reading these sad kitty/cat stories!? Does anyone care to share the info. I have had friends have these problems and they couldn't care for their cats because of the expense. Must be real hard for less Rich in this world who adore their cats! My Blessings to them all! and their owners that they get to KEEP their jobs, since they are needed for family and pets to live happily. BLESSINGS!

  • My siamese cat, Pearl, is 12 years old. She suffers of asthma and I will try Aerokat to help her. I love her so much...

  • omg I had no idea about this.... I had a cat who use to wheeze all the time and I joked saying damn shame my cat has asthma too.... OMG! he past away on the 9th but not due to asthma... but damn I feel like shit now joking about that...damn...my poor baby probably did have asthma

  • So how do you cure it

  • My cat died right in front of me on the floor in just a few minutes, i watched helplessly, I didnt know what was happening. it was only the 2nd time i ever saw it happen to her. Please if you love your cat do something about it before its too late,

  • @angenesia I'm really sorry about your cat and how she went. I took my cat to the vet today and got her a shot to help her until the meds are here.

  • our cat has ashma we hav to get an inhalor which looks a bit like a gas mask

  • I have just had my cat diagnosed (abyssinian) and they've given her a systematic steroid injection which will last 3 days and then she's going onto an inhaled preventative.

  • I did heal my cat who had asthma for 2 years with REIKI.

  • how can we stop that ?

  • Thanks, Now I know what's wrong with my kitty!!! :O

  • Aww my cat is a measy and has asthma too. We have to give her vet-prescribed Predizone from time to time. She was really bad at one point where we were giving her almost 2 pills a day but then we changed her litter and she got better. Quality litter is key since for asthmatic kitties.

  • @emx2artgirl *Quality litter is key for asthmatic kitties.* Sorry about the typo on that last sentance. I was going with 2 different thoughts there :p

  • @emx2artgirl what cat litter did you change to? My cat has the same problem.

  • @reddawn55 i switched to arm and hammer, less amonia smell

  • @emx2artgirl did your kitty have any side effects that you noticed, because of the pill ? For example, extreme thirst equaling extremely large pees. And when the cat's taking his/her cat nap, actually peeing the bed ? Does anyone know anything about this ? It's not Predizone that our kitty is on, instead right now he's on VANECTYL P and also on NOVOHYDROXYZINE. What a disaster for our poor cats bladder. We're meeting with our vet soon to re evaluate.

  • @BrandNewToYou No unconscious peeing, but she gained weight on the pred.

  • Poor Kity!!

  • There's not very many good vets. I've can easily see my cat has asthma. He is exactly like the cat in the video. I've had him to two vets. One wanted to pull his teeth after looking at him for 30 seconds. The other one wanted to sell me some antibiotics. Neither suggested asthma.

  • @notlefnai the antibiotics helped my cat only for a few months. its now back sadly :(

  • Comment removed

  • okey, I saw my cat doing it couple times last year..what does it mean? her blood work and anything else is fine....

  • My cat does this exactly when she coughs, but she doesn't have asthma. She might have fluid in her lungs though... :(

  • Build cat nebulizer

  • Is this mild, moderate, or severe? The vet today (December 27, 2010) said my Aby has probably has mild asthma as she still runs around and is generally crazy, but this happens to her at least 3-4 times a day, everyday. I trust the vet, but I don't see how having these attacks everyday is mild.

  • @Buffheart go to another vet and see what they say. thats my sugestion. may help to see what someone else says if they say the same then thrn you know ya ok. if not look mor into it :)

  • @AngelBabe2233

There aren't many vets around here, so we just started treating her with an inhaler. She is also on Medrol for another few weeks. It's funny that I never noticed how much she was sleeping until she started feeling better. I actually thought that the medications were causing her to be hyperactive, but no, it was her old regular active.

  • @Buffheart Awww well i Wish you and your Kitty all the best. My cat had astma and We had him for 13 years. :) May he R.I.P

  • oh wow my cat started doing this we thought he was just sick

  • Stop the contradiction here, for the record this is a classic feline asthma attack.

  • oh, umm, my cat has asthma then, she.. she does that all the time.

  • ='( and lazer59882 your a fucking asshole

  • this is very annoying.

  • @laggerish

Are you a clinician, veterinary or human? If so, I suggest you go back and refresh yourself on asthma. If not, thanks for the troll.

  • Very informative.

  • My cat did this quite often, but ever since I moved to a smaller place and left the window crack 24/7 he hasn't been doing it at all, except for some rare occasions. I'm guessing the air quality may have something to do with it, either its too dusty or what not. This is the reason why I crack the window -- fresh air all the time!

  • @myahele My cat had the same problem. It has A LOT to do with the cat litter. Clay cat litters are no good for them. They swallow the dust when they cover up their pee and poo and over the course of time, it develops astma. I changed the litter to 99% dust free Nature's Miracle brand. It is AWESOME!!! Now, she hardly ever coughs. It is almost gone! Plus, I love it too. It has a natural wood smell into. And, it clumps great.

  • Oh yeah...my cat does the exact same thing. For a year and 6 months. Is there any possible way the vet can prescribe something to help her?? I really don't want to see my kitty like this anymore :-/ who knows, it could be putting her in pain (like hurting her chest each time she coughs hard like that), which i don't want. What is the cause of feline asthma?? are they born with it? or is it something in their enviroment?

  • @ccmayo Like I said to myahele, it has a lot to with the cat litter. I use Nature's Miracle brand. My cat almost stopped coughing. Because, she doesn't swallow the clay litter dust anymore. Trust me on that and give it a try.

  • @ccmayo

Take you cat to the vet, and ask them to perform a physical for your cat and if they diagnose asthma they can administer an inhaler that will be prescribed for your cat.

    Hope this helps!

  • My cat does this, too. It never occurred to me that he may have asthma! I just though he had hairballs but swallowed them. He hasn't done it in awhile though.

  • my cats does this from time to time. i dont have enough money to fully investigate. he seems happy enough...

  • My cat has been doing this EXACT same thing for 5 days, he almost never has hairballs so I knew that it wasn't that. I took him to the vet today; they diagnosed him with asthma and gave him a steroid injection. If he doesn't get better in this next week he will have an xray. After doing some research and seeing a vet I'm confident that it is asthma, and anyone who says otherwise is ignoring the facts in front of his/her face. It's a stupid argument.

  • My cat is doing this daily the last few days and swallowing hard. I do not think it is hairballs as she chucks these up occasionally with absolutely no problem. She is about 15/16 (i took her on for someone at uni 3 years ago) She is an indoor cat, but likes to sit on the balcony when I let her out so I know she hasnt swallowed/eaten adnything dodgy.

  • This definitely is a feline asthma attack. My cat has had these all her life--I just thought they were hairballs. I talked to her vet about it and he said she is asthmatic, however she does not require treatment at this time. He said if she becomes short of breath after exertion that then she may need medical intervention. So not all asthmatic cats require meds, and not all vets will push medication on you!

  • This is asthma I had a cat that past that suffered from feline asthma so my suggestion take her/him to vet and they will treat it with meds for asthma. Hope kitty feels better!

  • That's not fucking asthma. My cat does this alot like most people are saying.

  • @twilightdivamidna You're a moron

  • @dtoma555 And you're an ass.

  • This is bull crap

  • Being so fat did not help, either.

  • This is such BS. My cats have done this over the years and even my Moms dog does it from time to time. It has to do with hairballs, being indoor cats, and yes, it is clearing the airways. But it is not asthma like people get. Yeah, we need to give our cats MORE meds and steroids! Vets get rich enough as it is. My cat is doing it now, he's fine, I just keep an eye on him.

  • you are a dumbass

  • @jetsetjenny02 Unless you are a veterinarian, I don't think you are qualified to know if a cat does or does not have feline asthma. My cat was just diagnosed this week with feline asthma after x-rays, blood tests, and urine tests confirmed that he does. At first we thought it was a hairball too, but after he continued to cough and wheeze for 2 months and it progressively got worse, we figured it was more than a hairball. Don't dismiss something you don't know anything about.

  • Dang my both cats r doing that!!!!! Is it pretty bad??? Can a cat infect another cat?

  • i think my cat has this...:(

  • my cat was doing the same thing UNTIL I STOP FEEDING HER THE PURINA CAN FOOD. after she stop eating that, over two years now...NO MORE ATTACKS...it was the food!

  • @ werecatgirl, same here. our cat does this exact same thing and i thought he was trying to cough up a hairball that just wouldn't come up. i'm going to have to get him to a vet.

  • oh my god....

allt his time I thought she was having hairball problems.

    Crap...

  • same

  • Certain clinical signs can indicate a number of different conditions during a differential diagnosis. A cat coughing like this MIGHT have hairballs, but it might also have a severe respiratory infection. The animal could also be having an asthma attack. Kind of cruel to assume that you know more than a DVM and just pass a case of asthma off as "just hairballs" when you are obviously ill informed in such matters.

Way to neglect your responsibilities as a pet owner. Poor cats.

  • my cat is not throwing up hairballs when she's having fits like the cat in this video. she's wheezing not coughing. it's asthma tard. you're not a vet

  • Cretin.

  • @insertbadname Cunt

  • poor cat.

  • My cat does THAT eXACT same thing...my mom is a vet and says that's what she has...

  • Maybe that's from scents, like a fabric softener, like Bounce. Scents are the waste product of the petroleum industry. Febreze is like rat poison to cats. The ASPCA says that's an urban legend, but I don't believe it. I have gone all unscented, and personally feel better (unscented safflower handmade soap, Borax, baking soda, table salt to clean). Check out the EWG video "What is Fragrance?" /watch?v=sN5IiaOaIt8

  • "lalungenuicdestens", your comment is uncalled for!

  • Treatments: When dealing with feline asthma, there are 3 main forms of treatment; injection, oral, & inhalants. Many vets will start by either giving your cat an injection or sending you home with pills & have you monitor response to treatment, which is a huge form of diagnosis and is what I opted to do for my cat. However, I also had blood work, x-rays, and a heart worm test done. It needs to be known that there are significantly less side effects in long term treatment with the inhaled meds.

  • Common tests for diagnosis: X-rays which could show inflammation around airways & lungs(often referred to "doughnuts"), blood testing, heart worm testing(can have similar symptoms), & a Bronchoalveolar Lavage which is considered the most definitive test but can also be risky. There is also the option to try response to treatment for diagnosis of feline asthma.

Also, you will want to call around your area to find a specialist vet who is experienced and informed when dealing with feline asthma.

  • Hello, I just read through all the comments to this video & thought I would offer some more information. I am not a vet, but I have a 3 year old male cat who was just diagnosed with feline asthma.

First of all, if your cat is showing any of these symptoms and is obviously having difficulty breathing, take him or her to the vet ASAP. It is very important to get the symptoms under control as asthma can be life threatening.

I will post another comment on common tests for diagnosis & treatment.

  • Hi

I think that the litter is exacerbating my cat's asthmatic coughing. I am going to switch his litter to a much less dusty one.

    B

  • Hello,

Switching litter is a great first step in helping your asthmatic feline & is one I took myself. I switched from a heavy scented, clay based litter & am now using a corn based litter called "World's Best Cat Litter". It is a tad more expensive, but it has little to no dust & lasts longer than most clay based brands. I have also heard good things about "Yesterday's News" & "Swheat Scoop" cat litters.

Just try to stay away from litter that is clay based, dusty, & fragranced.

    Good luck!

  • my cat has these now too :(

  • Hi Kbelotto, my cat use to get one shot "Dexamethazone" and 14 Dexamethasone (1,5mg) pills and he stopped coughing within 3 days....NOW they improved the Dexamethazone "shot" in which they no longer require the pills. This shot lasts 4-6 weeks (or longer). My cat stopped coughing within 3 days and has not coughed once for 2 weeks now. By the way, my cat will be 8 in April and has had this yearly cough for the last 5 years. Wishing you and your Kitty the best!!!

  • There is a shot given called "Dexamethazone" which now lasts 4-6 weeks (or longer) where NO additional pills are given. My cat gets it every year around Jan-Feb and once he gets that shot, he stops coughing within 3 days and doesn't cough the rest of the year. Be advised that every attack not only damages their lungs more and more, but also shortens their life expectancy. Good luck to all the kitties and doggies out there with this nasty condition.

  • My cat does this a lot..I always thought it was a hairball. I wondered why she never coughed anything up.

  • There is an over the counter hairball treatment that comes highly recommended, called Laxatone. As sunthief79 already stated, it will not hurt your cat to try this if you think she has hairballs and not feline asthma.

However, if she has never coughed anything up, it does sound like feline asthma. Please see a vet ASAP for testing to help pinpoint the problem.

  • my cat has this and gets an asthma attack every... ehhh 125-30 minutes :(

  • This was a very helpful video. I have been concerned about my cat who is part Siamese and is having these attacks. Now I am more educated and can get her proper medical attention.

  • :( I had to take my cat to a new vet because after 2 years of him getting these "coughs" and sneezes, all he would give me were antibiotics... at least now I feel better knowing what he has

  • Yeah my cats (1st) vet did the same! Kept telling me it was a throat infection or hairballs. I told her over and over that I thought it was breathing because I have asthma myself and his chest sounded weezy and his stomach spasmed. She kept telling me I was wrong. One day my cat got very ill and nearly died from it, I tried another vet who treated him straight away for respiratory problems. What worse, the 1st vet was over twice the price of the new vet and that wasnt her 1st misdiagnosis!

  • I hate this, I get asthma attacks from my cats but they dont get asthma attacks form me.

    So unfair.

  • lol

  • ????\????

  • What is your confusion NXFOL?

  • Shut up man, you got my laughing LMAO!

  • How can you tell the difference between this and a hairball?

  • lol

  • From what I read a hairball looks very simular, but with asthma they never cough up anything, just foamy fluid. No Hair. You can just treat for hairball as it's just a laxative anyway and very safe and see if it helps.

  • THANK YOU! These are the symptoms that my cat has been exhibiting and I haven't been able to figure out what it has been! I can take him to the vet and get him the proper help he needs! THANK YOU SO MUCH! ~Love Darcy

  • my cat has this , so watching this video makes me want to cry. i deal with it every 3-6 weeks. we go to the vet a lot.

  • Thanks for this! I think more people should do this to identify problems in their animals (or people for that matter).

  • Thanks, it is a really valuable information. I have a cat of11 years old and I discovered one month ago he is allergic and he suffers of dispnea and respiratory attacks. Now I feel better to know there are so many cats suffering of this desease!

  • Thank you so much for posting this--We have had our cat at the vet 3 times in 3 weeks--and the vet said it was hairballs--this video showed us that he does have asthma--Thanks showing this has saved our cats life!!!

  • poor cats. i just to the hospital yesterday because of my asthma attack.

  • You're a cat too?

  • haha! no I'm human.

  • That you very much for this valuable information. I was interested in finding out whether my little kitten has asthma, and I think she might. This video explains/shows some similar behavior.

  • Thank you for sharing, this will help a lot of people & cats.

  • very helpful. Thank you for posting!

  • hey my master blacky cat who is 17 yrs old & he has been problem with asthma since he was 8 yrs old & i took him to vet every 6 wks for taking a shot that called steriod that really big help him alot.. help him being engery peppy... i took him 2 wks ago for steriod shot to relief his asthmas.. i hope one of u did take ur cats to vet for steriod shot to relief them so they wont be suffer. poor them..

  • has anyone ever tried colloidal silver for a cat's asthma attack?

  • My cat used to have occassional asthma. I did some changes: I got rid of her fleas. I also gave her a light leather collar. I've suspected that cats are possibly allergic to vinyl and nylon collars (I think this is overlooked). Every two weeks I also give her a light shower in her travel cage for 2-3 minutes.I advocate experimenting by taking off the vinyl/nylon collar and see if you notice a diiference for a few days. Also, make sure the cat is flea free.

  • does a cat ever throw up saliva from an asthma attack?

  • yeah that happened to my cat

  • I've had a cat with Asthma and one with HCM. I'll take the HCM over the asthma any day.

  • i just had an asthma attack yesterday at football practice. scariest day of my life
