  • very interesting, its very different and its cleaner , less people!! peaceful

  • I remember all these photos, the beach, the city. Was 13 when I left in 1974!

    Fond memories.

  • wow subhanallh its was soooo clean! LONG LIVE LIBYA!! inshallah the libyans will be free from this Monster!

  • Very beautiful place. It is the first time I have ever seen pictures of Libya, outside of the news.

  • Chatalaine thanks for sharing. Lived there from 60-69 with my big bros and sure enjoyed seeing memories of my childhood! I wished I could go back. But then most of us kids from OCS do. Thanks again. DSchoenewald

  • i am astonished!! i know very well Libya in nowadays ... my god it's so different ...

  • Brings back many great memories from our family's time there 1966 - 73. Good friends made and kept from those days. ~D. Harms

  • Brings back many great memories from our family's time there 1966 - 73. Good friends made and kept from those days.

  • @CDonnaHansen

Donna haven't seen you or Ruth in 20+ years. Nice to see yours, Doug Wagner's and Greg Seipel commenting here. I sure loved the memories too, wished I could go back!.

  • Please pray for the Libyan people.

  • @chatalaine we do and our hearts are bleeding seeing all the horrors Gaddafi's family is able to do...TAHYA LIBYA HORRA!!!

  • It sure brings back memories........the same beech in 1963 as an 11 year old where i shattered the silence by cutting my foot on a broken pepsi bottle....!!

(where the scouts are sitting near the steps..)

  • NICE GREEK EARTH

  • Lots of memories from 1969-71 and 1973,,I was 11 years old, would love to see pics from the american school and any year books from school

  • it was cool but now it's better cuz it's free and Libyans well above the outsiders well, i'd rather to die than to see an outsider abuse our freedom...thnx for sharing

  • @hytemabusnina I don't think the people of Libya are feeling very free today. I pray for them...

  • @hytemabusnina: The "outsiders" where *minorities* according to the United Nations ratifications also signed by the Libyan Arab majority upon Libya's Indipendence in 1951. They worked hard for the wellbeing of Libya, and loved Libya just like any other Libyan. If you kept us instead of savagely expelling us (and confiscating our houses, business and belongings) to pursue an ethnic and (pseudo)religious "purification", Libya today would be a culturally rich, democratic and prosperous country.

  • It was nice Libya but with a severe enemy, now Tripoli is free but with worse than before

  • Beautiful pictures chatalaine, I love the Turkish fort and the pictures of the sea bring back memories big time. I was raised in Libya from 1958 to 1977, we lived way out of town at kilometer 9 then moved closer in to kilometer 7 near the teen club. My father, who was a petroleum geologist stayed on into the 80’s. It was the best place on earth to be raised if you get a chance read “A Nest Of Corsairs” by Seton Deardon, the book brings libya’s big thick, rich history into perspective.

  • Thanks for posting. We lived in Tripoli from 1969-1984. Your video brings back great memories!

  • Brings back lots of memories. Was stationed there in 1954-55. Was assigned to the 633 AC&W squadron as a radar operator. I was only 18 years old at the time. It sure is a long way from Michigan where I was born and still live. Thanks again for the video.

  • fucking leader

  • fucking leader

  • Thanks for bringing back memories of a great country. I was born in Tripoli in 1945 and in 1953 went to school in England. My father worked for Barclays Bank and I returned every summer until he retired 1967.

  • Thanks for the memories. Our first overseas was three years at Wheelus. We could even be somewhere in those beach pictures!

I've tried to spot either of our two off-base digs on Google Earth but can hardly recognize anything, Tripoli has expanded so much into what was fields in the '60s.

    Thanks again!

  • I lived in Giorgimpopoli from 1963 til 1966My father was a meteorologist at RAF Idris who trained Libyans. We went to the Army School at Prinn Barracks. The Extra Butcher was near where we lived. I have very fond memories of Libya, but I havn't forgotten passing the shanty town, where Libyans lived in houses made of corrugated iron, without toilets and running water every day on our way to school. It would be nice to go back some day, but I'm afraid British citizens aren't so popular.

  • What a lovely video. Lots of memories. We lived in Garden City from 1962 to 1970 Tripoli was a great place to live. Even though my father was not in the services. (Barclays Bank DCO) We belonged to the Officers Club and I seemed to remember that as a teenager I was laways there swimming. A lovely trip down memory lane. Thank you

  • Brings back memories I was very young

    Thanks

  • I was stationed at Wheelus AFB from Feb. 1959 - Feb, !961.

It was hot and a long two years. I guess I enjoyed it looking back but not during my tour. I was in the 7272 Cams. Had great friends and great Pinochle players.

  • My stepdad was stationed there too .. 1956 to 1960 and loved pinochle .. enlisted .. electrician .. we lived off base though. His name is John Pallino.

  • Comment removed

  • looking for anything from 1978 to 1982

  • My family was stationed in Libya in 1960 and I was born in 1962 on the AFB. Of course I do not remember any at all, I was only a few months old when we left. There are very few pictures so this was a wonderful thing to see. Thank you very much.

  • I was in Libya between January 1967 and June 1967 based at Timimi, then Derna and later RAF El Adem .. I used to drive for 4 hours from Timimi to Tobruk to collect 300 Jerry Cans of petrol.. I loved the desert and but only saw Tobruk and Cyrene and the War Cemetery at Acroma

  • Libyans used to be happy and live in peace until 1969.

  • it was better than now

  • thanx alot its enjoyabel to watch and it would b much better if u can change da music and put a old libyan song. thanx again with all da respect

  • the music makes me cry guys

  • I hope we will see the beauty of Tripoli and all Libyan cities soon. Thank you.

  • Thank you so much

  • Wow! thank you so much. I was born there in 1965 but left when I was 2 years old. I have no memories and very few pictures.

  • What wonderful pictures. Lots of great memories. I was in Tripoli '65 - '70. Age 9 - 13. Parents taught at OCS. Weekends at K15. Sunday brunch at Wheelus O-Club after services at Union Church of Tripoli. Really good times. Wish I could take my family back. Be interesting to see what I still remember. Seems like forever ago. Sorry I lost touch with so many good friends. Thanks for sharing.

  • Your dad taught me Geography and Speech in 9th grade 1968-1968; he was a great teacher making learning fun. My wife carla Greatsinger was also taught by your father. Good to hear from you and maybe you can attend the Tripoli Reunion in Houston this month 17th to 19th.

  • How nice to hear from you, too. Thanks for the invitation to the Reunion. Would have been there had it not been for another commitment in Phila. I seem to remember Dad mentioning you and your wife. Now I'm going to have to dig out the yearbooks and look. Where did you end up settling? We're near Orlando, FL. Sure hope to hear from you again.

  • I had Mr. Wagner in the 7th grade...I had Mr. Carter in the 6th grade, when I first found out I had his class, I was worried, he ruled the halls (walkways) back then, he turned out to be a nice teacher. OCS 67-70 nunnmic

  • What a small world. I had Mr. Carter for 6th grade, too. He also taught me piano. Remember the spiral notebooks we did of the continents. I have a great story about my Asia notebook and Libyan customs. Funny now - not so much then. I'm sure we crossed paths at some point. Sure am glad you remember my Dad. We had a great time at OCS. So many memories.

  • @dmwagnersr

We were classmates Doug. I remember the play you rehearsed the male lead daily in Mr. Carter's math class. Your mom was our chaperon on the Christmas cruise we took in 68, that was fun! Had breakfast and a nice visit with Mr. Carter in July 07 at the reunion. Seems I have only missed one of those reunions in 30 yrs.

  • thank you indeed i do like your photos, and please if you can find more do not hesitate to put them in the youtube

    Thank you again

    OSAMA / SURMAN-LIBYA

  • libya will becom free again very soon insh allah

  • I remember watching the city burn in 67from the rooftop of our apartment and being evacuated back to England. This video has brought back the better memories and my days at Tripoli college

  • Thank you so much, enjoyed the sites and recognized so much. I was there with my family from 63-66. Lived in Georganpopuli for the 1st year, and on base the last two. Enjoyed the show..thank you again!!

  • wow tripoli in the 60..what a fantastic place its very clean and tidy....do you know ....?they use to give parking tickets there...

  • really thanks for this nice show of Tripoli before...if you go to Libya now..you will think you are in war zone!!!!

  • Do u know thw owner of the owner of the shop in 2:06?

    Is he tunisian?

  • chatalaine , Wow , Tripoli in the 60s . I enjoyed them . What a romantic place .

  • طرابلس ليبيا thank you very much

  • By the way, thank you to whoever posted the video.I lived in Tripoli & attended OCS from 71 to76 then away to boarding school for another 3 years. The memories of such wonderful experiences & friendships are missed greatly.Summers in Tripoli were the best! I wish to come & walk some old dearly missed footsteps once again. Please get rid of the man whose name is spelled 87 ways & who probably has as many personalities.

  • Thank you for the wonderful photos, I have found memories of the old city from 1961-1968

  • that time was amazing and the best time in Libya thank you for this wonderful post

  • SELAM,LİBYA

  • Dear All,

thank you for your friendship. Few days ago a very important agreement has been signed between Italy an Libya. Italy apologised for the past cruelty and new relationship started for a future of pace and good economic exchange around the mediterranean. see. If you would like to compare how Libya has changed over the years please pay a visit to my youtube site. I'm uploading short video from 8mmm movie taken between 50' and 60'.

  • thanks a lot for this vedio. i live in UK for long time now i miss Tripoli verymuch, would u PLZ post more about nowdays Tripoli

  • libyan 4 life im libyan but ive lived in england 4 eight yrs cant wait until i go bak der in december 4 ever i mis it so much i nearly cried seen dis coz although im 13 now it looks much beter den now i which it stayed da same but i stil luv it no mater wat

  • tripoli bel suol d'amore, ti giunga dolce questa mia canzon. Sventoli il Tricolore sulle tue torri al rombo del cannon!

  • You must be joking , Libya is full of Italians - they still think they rule the place . !

  • I'm sorry but the reality is that Italian people born in Libya are still not allowed to get the visa to visit the country. I'm personally happy that Libya has finally reached the independence and open issues are only against Italian Government unable to refund our lost. I don't have any resentment aganist Libya and Lybian people. I'm only sad that I cannot visit the country nor the cemetery in Tripoli where my brother and sister are buried since the 60'.

  • Very nice, thank you for posting the photo of the city where I was born and as italian still not allowed to visit. I've also loaded a short video.

    Max

  • Wow .. so many memories! I have no photographs from the time I lived there, though my stepdad probably still does. He was stationed at Wheelus and we lived there from 1956 to 1960. I was in the 4-7 grades there .. so long ago. We lived off base and I would take off and wander around the city by myself .. no one ever knew I was gone. Sometimes I would catch a garry for 10 p. because I loved to ride in them. I was scared of nothing. I've never stopped wandering .. Thank you!

  • Very very nice shots, I was 12 in those years. You make me feel again a young boy, Tks,

    Paolo

  • wow...I almost broke in tears watching this. I wasn't born until 88 but what I remember of that time more closely resembles these pictures than it does today.

Thank you for a beatiful post of my beautiful beloved country.

  • Uhm. Tripoli looks much more modern and clean in these old pictures than now. i am 40years late... Tripoli is completely different now, i don't like it, sorry to say that. what people in tripoli enjoy now is speeding with their cars. hard to believe, at work they are slow as zombies and suddenly they become formula one drivers.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I was at Wheelus from 68-70 in 1st and 2nd grade. I remember that they moved 1st and 2nd graders to the quad from their separate building. In the middle(of the Quad) were two camels (Adam and Eve).

I remember we always used the officer's beach on Wheelus because the family beach was too rocky, and that snack bar at the beach house.

What a great memory that place was and how nice the Libyan people were.

  • Thanks. I was there in the '80s. Ugh ... very different. People were nice though. They deserved more.

  • WoW..I lived in Tripoli in 61-63. my dad was stationed at Wheelus AFB. we lived off base in Scaradava (don't know spelling) then on base. I was 9-11 years old so I do remember

    thanks for posting

  • I just wanted to say thanks for posting these pictures, they are beautiful. I particularly love the picture with the camels walking down town :D

It is sad that some people were made to leave but it seems pretty hopeful that those who remember libya as their first home to be able and come back either to visit or to live their if they like it the way it is now!...I now live in Canada but I go back whenever i get the chance!....gracie again

  • I visited many parts of Libya last lear on business. The country's urban infrastructure has decayed since these wonderful pictures were taken. But the people were wonderful, warm and generous.

    Thanks for the photos

  • thise photos make me cry

  • thanx 4 sharing look @ our country then...we cud b so advanced nowadays bt ther r certain ppl holding it bk

  • thanks

it's nice to see old pix of my home

  • what the hell happened to libya?!

  • Beautiful pictures.. thanks for sharing them with us..I hope Libya prospers like it had during those days..

  • it was the real tripoli in that time nice ,clean every thing was good ,,if u go to tripoli now i will tell 2 words ( no comments )

  • I lived in libiya for 2 years.. Garabuli near Tripoli.. Went there when i was third grade (1992) when the war started in Bosnia and then came back somewhere in 1995 there where 2,000 other kids in the camp with me. Good memories :)

  • You know, the Hotel where you stood is still by the beach in algarabulli, think to come and viste again, i hiope you have agreat memory though

  • Whow!

I was living 1969-75 in Tripoli when I was 5-10 years old. I have lots of fotos and S8 films. Mabe I find some time to digitalize them and put tem inot Ytube too.

  • wooow !! I just got back from Libya after beeing a way for 10 yrs ...if u look at the video and compare it with libya now the video shuld be 2007 ....when a I went back there all I saw is a reverse time machine , destruction , ignorance , no rules , jobs for shabab zay al ward all they do is smoke shisha ...WoW is all i can say..allah yir7amak ya Malik!

  • you must have gone somewhere else.i am sure you did. oh by the

  • hmm... small detail, golf club or nadi al rimal has been destroyed.

  • Isn't that sad news?

  • for me, it's sure that its a sad news.

  • i can't be happyer

  • That's very sad. I have many fond memories of swimming there. We were in Tripoli from 1974-1979.

  • hi edgirl i'm youth libyan plz don't sad now Better than before and welcome in your country

  • chatalaine , wow ! you got the fotos of the golden years of Tripoli ! Thanks ! We want more . I am a Libyan from Tripoli & I know how these days were sweet & lovely . Nostalgia most of the times is a mirage , but in the case of Tripoli , is not ( a mirage ) .

  • Big Big thank you.

  • thanks for the great video.

  • I lived here as a child, I had tears in my eyes to see this video again. Brought back many warm memories. I do not know if the audience of today realizes the importance of this video in the timeframe of 1960. A special time in the history of this city. I do not remember the people as willing to have themselves photographed as I have seen here. Thank you.

  • nice one u can send me this pictures

  • It's a great video which contains many invaluable photos.Thank you because I like North Africa.

  • ياااااااااااااااااااااااااحسسسسسسسسسسسسرة

  • Thanks Chatalaine for a wonderful slide show. I have been visiting Libya since 1987. Libya resembles your photos more today than it did 15-20 years ago. Still lots of trash to remove from the beaches. I'll try to upload a slide show of my more recent photo's of Tripoli. A Libyan friend of mine's uncle worked at the gas station on Wheelus as a 14 yr old and went to the US when the base closed. He lives in the US today after serving in the US Army! Thanks again!!

P.S. Loved the music - what is it?

  • J aime mon pays

  • Thank you chatalaine for this wonderful slide show. Libya was so beautiful then. I am sad to report that the charm and beauty captured in those photos has gone; it was destroyed by the fool Gadafy.

Please post more photos if you have them, especially from visits to other parts of the country.

  • WONDERFUL THANK YOU VERY MUCH. (Ben ashoor ya HASSRA)

  • wow very nice! thanx for posting whats the song called i LOVE it :)

  • So Beatifull

  • wasnt alive in da 60s..looks niiice tho!!!!

  • what is so great about reminding me that at that time I could swim in my beach becasue punch of westerners decided they can not allow Libyans into their beaches

  • I am sorry. I was just a teen age girl when I lived in Tripoli. I had many Libyan friends back then and I would have never hurt anyone if I could have prevented it. I do remember I was only allowed to go to one small beach in GP.

  • Thanks for the memories ! I was a Benghazi 60's teen. It was enchanting.

  • Nice pictures and i am glad to see old history of Libya , but my brother the music is Sad !! sad saxphone ...and nice pictures .

  • I prefer to think the music is sentimental.

  • I love It ... that is Libya allways specaill ... I Really love it

  • I went back there 2 years ago, after 25 years in Europe...and off course it changed, but all the potential of a great med city is still there: the old town, in full rehabilitation, the italian centre, untouched. And new high buildings, the Corinthya Hotel, highways with a hectic traffic, but far more less westerners than in the late 60's early 70's. Very few places to go out, except thos lovely italian style expresso bars, and pizzeria's.

  • emotional journey watching this video as it takes me back and I so loved it there and the music suits it perfectly. a part of me will always be here. thank you for your work in putting this together and for sharing it with us.

  • To be honest I don't understand your comments - I'm in Libya right now and - it's the same like on those pictures. You might not like guy ruling this country (and I'd agree with you on that) but - it's still the good old Libya.

  • Awecz thank you for your comment. You hit the nail on the head. Maybe one day I will be able to see Tripoli again and I can tell gravydavie first hand that there is a good side to everything.

  • very nice video.

    thanx for doing this.

at least we will show the west that Libya-tripoli is still here.!

    and thnx again.!

  • My goodness....where did it all go wrong? Then compared to now - its totally different

  • I guess it's all in how you look at it. You know like is the glass half full of half empty. I prefer to see it as half full.

  • Ahhhh this is the Tripoli I want back. Thank you.

  • How wonderful to find your video. It's like stepping back in time for me because we were stationed at Wheelus when I was six. We were there for three years and I loved it. I remember the dependent's beach, the officer's club on the base. We lived in the city for a short time but moved to base quarters. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together!

  • To all of you that have taken a moment to leave a comment I thank you. I am so pleased that you have enjoyed my video.

    Dana

  • Hello, GREAT video. What is the name of the music that you used and where can I purchase it? Have a great day!
