I.Q? How could that be, given that the first real, standardized I.Q test was proposed by Binet; and that was approximately 3/4 after Herr, Mozart's death.
As I understand, period instruments of the day were less resonant. So tempi were likley a bit quicker in general. I like the clip of this. It's more anxious than brooding.
Agreed - the version of rolldito (trever pinnock) has perfect speed, but allthough the idea of using fluteplayers is nice - sometimes they are a little too loud - and the orchestra is not as good as within the Version of Peter Maag - result: The Orchestra of Peter Maags Versions with the Speed of Trever Pinnocks Version and it would be absolutely perfect! this version allthough very good played is a little to fast for my ears - no time to realize, understand and feel into it
I wish I could give a comment to his songs that would actually suit their greatness and perfection... but only he would be able to invent words that could descripe his works. There is no god to me but the one of music, Mozart.
@LordDarts Yes, i don't like the version of Karajan. It's curious the fact that his conduction of Beethoven's simphonies is, by contrast, absolutely amazing.
@marnikchoto Couldn't agree more. Karajan was an absolute master when conducting Beethoven, but his version of the 40th just sounds wrong to me. IMO, this movement needs to be dynamic and energetic which the Karajan version is so not. I agree wholeheartedly, this is the right tempo.
If memory serves me right, Sir Neville Mariner and the Academy of St. Martins in the Field did a pretty good version at roughly the same tempo.
who can honestly say what exactly is too fast or too slow? playing the piece quicker adds drive and energy, aspects many musicians forget about. yeah slow pieces are nice, and you can add expression to that style easily. what i personally find impressive is adding that expression to a quick style like the one given. in my opinion both styles just add a different presence to the piece, there is no such thing as too fast or too slow, unless taken to extremes of course.
@rolldito good version of first movement. But second and third movements (i am going to raise them soon) are low than this version in my opinion.Nevertheless, both are much better than the version with most views in youtube. Excuse my poor english :(

I don't think I've ever heard a version of this with a harpsichord before. Can't say I like that addition, it makes it sound like an older symphony.

I think its Von Karajan
VodKaLogic 1 year ago
@VodKaLogic Certainly not. Karajan's choice of tempo would have been slower, his orchestra larger and he wouldn't have used a continuo.
