I used to catch this show on late-night cable; I think it was a PBS station, since BBC America wasn't available where I was (and may not have even been operational yet). I used to love this show! Campy and cheesy as all get out, but loads of fun, and some of the stories had some cool elements and twists. To sweeten the pot, Simone Blendix was very easy on the eyes. If I could find a DVD or BluRay of this series, I would grab it ASAP.
This was a lot of fun, this show. I loved the completely outlandish aliens interacting with humans like it was the most natural thing in the world. I'd love to get my hands on the home video of the series.
Elaborate sets, cgi, model work, prosthetics...why doesn't Britain make this sort of high budget stuff anymore? I like Primeval but it is people interacting with bad cgi in every episode. I want more British written space shows, this was brilliant.
@itsdave123 Ok I will give you that but each episode of space precinct had a higher budget than nuwho, without even adjusting for inflation. Also that is one show...where are all of the others? Where is this decades Blakes 7? Or anything to the standard of a Terry Nation show.
@thatguywiththeegg Basically, money. Every one of those prosthetics is thousands of pounds in materials and hundreds of man-hours of production. Sets are big and bulky, models have to be made many times over if you want to damage, alter or blow them up.
CGI means they can change whatever they like at any stage without having to setup all over & re-shoot, or have it there in the first place, cheaper. And the only penalty is it looks crap. Which is fine when all you want to do is churn out pap.
AWESOME!!! Used to watch this when i was younger! absolutely loved and and have been trying to remember what it was called! Thanx for putting this up!!! [=
saw two minutes of this and thought it was hilarious! the aliens were so funny looking! just talked and dressed like regular ppl but wit hilarious alien faces! also found it funny that they just had regular like nypd cop uniforms even though they were in space 2040
I was way older than it's target audience, but I used to watch it in the early evening before I went to work - I really got into it, and enjoyed the earlier episodes most; the wonderfully realised cyborg, and the REALLY creepy snake-like bomber were the two I liked most. An under rated gem. Typically detail-rich design as well, the hallmark of anything created by the God-like Gerry Anderson, whose shows made my life so much richer as a kid back in the 60's. Genius!
@eviltreemonster Can't really compare. They are two completely different shows. I say just watch some episodes and judge for yourself. And don't let it fool you because of what it looks like, it gets quite dark in places. Extortionists, people smuggling (smuggling of people, not people who smuggle ;), hitmen, and so on,
This is not meant to be spam, but good news many of us have hoped for.
From tvshowsondvd(dot)com,
"Beginning November 23rd Image Entertainment will be distributing the complete series of Space Precinct on DVD. The 5-disc set will contain all 24 episodes (1063 minutes) of the U.K. program, presenting them in full screen video and English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio. Cost is $49.98 SRP. Cover art isn't available yet, but stay tuned!"
@nighttraintomemphis because of tvshowsondvd i came looking for the opening, ahhh memories watching this show saturday afternoons on my local NBC affiliate
The show had a reasonable time slot at first in the Memphis area on what became the UPN affiliate, but it was moved to about 2:30 AM on Tuesday mornings, and even then it wouldn't always air at the scheduled time for whatever reasons. It was discouraging to catch the last of the closing credits at the beginning of the recording, or the beginning of the opening credits at the end of the recording.
I loved this as a kid. I had the toy version of their space police cruiser and it was great. Sadly I can't find it :( Come to think of it, I haven't seen my toy Robocop police car for years either. I guess they must be hiding in the same place
I barely remember this show. One thing that struck me about it was that all the humans were white. I guess they finally kicked all the black people off the earth, huh?
@MegabyteUnleashed Naw I think maybe the white guys left voluntarily because they were never able to fix the Gulf Oil Spill and irreparably ruined the planet. So they said, "Well, it's fucked now. Let the niggers have it." (j/k)
Ah, the good old days. Back in England this was the way to spend evenings. Too bad our tv nowadays is full of shit like Big Brother and a million trillion gay ass talk shows.
Long live the 90's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I only saw this once, the last ten minutes of an episode. I said to my 11 year old son, when it had finished - "Do you know what? That was good, really surprisingly good - nice bit of escapism. When is it on again?" Then the TV announcement came "That was the last in the present series". I don't think it has ever been shown in England since. SPACE PRECINCT is class. I looked beyond the gimmicks into the realm of fantasy. Go with it and chill, release yourself.
@FukinMikeAlright Wow! What an eloquent and articulate way of expressing a raw and honest reaction... tell me, have you ever considered writing for the Times old chap, think they could use someone with such a striking command of critique as your good self .... you make Oscar Wilde look positively thuggish with that kind of verbal capacity for wit and charm.
OMG, you are soooooo full of crap! The series aired in 1994 and 1995, if you are 16 years old, you've must be some kind of wunderkind, at age of 1 to understand and watch show...
You must be very stupid person, or just are 16 year old wannabe...
C'mon, 16 years from now (to the past), this didn't exist, or you didn't understand human speech, you were that young - don't bullshit us! You didn't watch it when it was aired!
@MegabyteUnleashed The funny thing is, when I was watching this as a kid, there would be people saying that it was tripe and that TV was much better in their day. And here we are, 15 years on. People saying the exact same thing about the current state of TV. "Much better in my day".
@hcvang Unfortunatly, this is true. Because people these days would much rather eat up the sheer shit that is X Factor, Dancing with the stars and so on. Shows that require no thought into making them, no sense of adventure, no characters to care for and empathise with. Entertainment is no longer about being entertained by stories, it is now about laughing at morons and Z-list celebrities who want a quick and easy way to 15 minutes of fame, whatever it takes. And that, is the true garbage.
@MegabyteUnleashed well, if you want to compare it to cheap shit reality shows, sure it's better - but the second you compare it to modern shows in it's own genre, it falls flat on it's face in a second.
@hcvang The same can be said of many shows. True, it has been ages since I saw any episode other than the cyborg one. Maybe I do have rose tinted glasses. I just view shows based on their own, instead of comparing it to other shows.
Gerry Anderson's shows were always awesome and entertaining. Didn't get to see this show much in the States, but I always watched it when it was on. Loved the blend of CG and live miniature effects, plus the stories & acting were quite good too. This had kinda the same feel as Babylon 5 or Farscape- which were out about the same time. I miss those shows. Thanks for posting this!
i think its safe to say that every boy who watched this thought Officer Castle was hot, and I remember rushing home every week to get to see it in time, lol those were the days :)
It annoys me that i used to really enjoy watching this Show many years ago , and yet these days i cant remember the names of any of the Character in the Series . I'll have to look up the Series sometime soon to refresh my memory .
I loved this show when i was kid, I even remember having a Toy version of that Squad car with the two cops included and the police badges as well, good times.
This show was class in it's own right. It's downfall was that it did'nt really have a target audience. They tried to aim it at kids but some episodes had themes that really didn't make sense to anyone under 16. I think that's why i loved it as a kid. I did'nt know what was really going on, it was kind of disjointed like someone tried to mash an episode of Cops and a sci-fi soap together.
Even though it had only one season, i think it is worthy of a remake. All it needs is a little direction.
hmm.. a crappy police show set in space, or a fantasy series that can be set in any time and on any world in the universe... I know which one I'd pick.
haha i used to love it to for like the first 10 mins of each episode lol get that intro tune (im a geek but i loved it) and some of the start to see if the story wanna gonna be good mwhaha then i found startrek and never looked back :D
No, it wasnt quality - it couldnt even compete with the soaps. Ratings werent there - product was garbage. No thought went into it what-so-ever... Just your average, and rather poor, cop show - but set in space. Who cares?
I remember this show because it marked the point in my childhood when I developed a sense of taste. When it started I was all "Woo! Spaceships! Aliens!". By the time it was cancelled it had dawned on me that it was utter shite.
Thanks for putting this up. A great TV memory that takes back to my childhood. This is the first time I seen this since the original transmission. I always disappointed that they never got repeated during the years. Still, a fantastic title sequence, similar in style to THUNDERBIRDS I think. And Gerry Anderson's/Derek Meddings model work will always be the best in the business.
Space Precinct, as far as I know, is no longer shown on television but as to it's popularity, well I think it speaks for itself, there were 12 volumes in total that made it to VHS. In 2000 the series was released onto DVD.
Alas, it only seems to be on DVD in the UK, and even then you'll only find them from second hand sellers on placed like Amazon and eBay. Bring out the whole season! Why not - they release every other semi-obscure TV series eventually.
Wow! Seriously underrated show. I remember how popular it was at the time; there were a lot of toys available. wanted Slow-Mo. I watched it every week and I had one video, The Snake and The Host, but I seem to have lost it. It was cheesy but fun. I loved Brogan's terminally raised eyebrow.
omg.. brings back some great memories! whats happened to kids tv today? I use to run home from school to see this show every week, was great! and had a huge crush on Jack lol yum yum
Could someone please post the original 1986 SPACE POLICE pilot starring Shane Rimmer? It's a million times more impressive than the joyless rubbish that SPACE PRECINCT ended up being.
Space precinct is a British TV series that was created at Pinewood Studios in the UK. It aired during 1994 and 1995 on BBC2 and SKY1 in the UK and syndication in North America.
I used to catch this show on late-night cable; I think it was a PBS station, since BBC America wasn't available where I was (and may not have even been operational yet). I used to love this show! 20+ years straight on tv trumps what a few weeks?
mybutterpecanbutt 3 years ago
if by intelligence you mean horrible writing lol
both space preinct and doctor who are a bit shit really, but at least space precinct has mother fuckin guns.
philyburkhill 3 years ago
I couldnt care less about characters - it's a tv show, not reality. And frankly, one lousy season vs. 30 seasons kind of speaks for itself

When this show first started, I thought it was awesome. By the time it finished, I realised it was shit. I consider that a milestone in my childhood.

This used to be quality back in the days! Good times!
MalibuSurf01 3 years ago
No, it wasnt quality - it couldnt even compete with the soaps. Ratings werent there - product was garbage. No thought went into it what-so-ever... Just your average, and rather poor, cop show - but set in space. Who cares?

I remember this show because it marked the point in my childhood when I developed a sense of taste. When it started I was all "Woo! Spaceships! Aliens!". By the time it was cancelled it had dawned on me that it was utter shite.

1:01-1:17 sounds like the music from Predator!! Alan Silvestri!

Wow. I've been trying to figure out the name of this show and hunt it down for years! This intro reminds me of good times :)

The music is excellent- really reminiscent of Star Wars and Predator, specially the last 20 seconds.
somethinglacking1 4 years ago
Alas, it only seems to be on DVD in the UK, and even then you'll only find them from second hand sellers on placed like Amazon and eBay. Bring out the whole season! Why not - they release every other semi-obscure TV series eventually.

Wow! Seriously underrated show. I remember how popular it was at the time; there were a lot of toys available. wanted Slow-Mo. I watched it every week and I had one video, The Snake and The Host, but I seem to have lost it. It was cheesy but fun. I loved Brogan's terminally raised eyebrow.

I wish this would come out on DVD in the US.
Is it currently airing on any station or channel anywhere in the world?

A true classic that like Firefly only had one season made before it's demise! Shame!

Thanks for that one! In Germany it was released as "Space Cops - Tatort Demeter City". It is still one of my favourite scifi-shows.

Could someone please post the original 1986 SPACE POLICE pilot starring Shane Rimmer? It's a million times more impressive than the joyless rubbish that SPACE PRECINCT ended up being.
