  • Lol funny as out!

  • How she kept a straight face through that I dont know

  • @pyote5 I saw an interview with her where she said this scene took like 20 takes to shoot cause she couldn't stop laughing. She said it was hardest scene to shoot of any movie she was ever in !!

  • Lolol for a while there I forgot what the hell he was talking about. I love Steve Martin :)

  • Jake Abel brought me here. lol

  • Watching this clip felt like it took about a day

  • Okay that just made me giggle. I gotta watch that movie again I had forgotten how funny it was..

  • i think she was dead ; she died of laughter :D lmfaaooo.

  • she must of had earplugs in her ears to keep herself from laughing

  • How could he say all those lines and not burst out laughing?

  • @phantomowner Because he's Steve Martin. He's a professional man of laughter.

  • I slit the sheet the sheet I slit and on the slitted sheet i sit...

I've never been relaxed enough around anyone to say that

  • this scene is so amazing. true comedic genius.

  • "You look so peaceful you almost look dead...." That line always cracks me up!

  • If that's ok with you, don't say anything.

    Silence

Thank you. You've made me very happy

  • I've been on here at work for 3 hours.....but it seems like 10 and a half days..........

  • Freakin Classic!!!

  • GREAT Clip!!! I Love this movie!!! Thanks for posting!!!

  • Was I the only one who thought Bernadette Peters didn't look asleep in this scene--she looked dead?

  • I can hear his stomach growling at 1:23, haha

  • Steve is the Greatest of his Time (Y)

  • "I know we've only known each other for 4 week and 3 days..but to me its been like 9 week and five days..first day it seemed like a week, 2'd day seemed like 5 days..tgird day seemed like a weeke again..n the fourth day seemedl ike 8 days. LMAO love the jerk!

  • oh man, at like 1:21 you can hear very faintly hear a gesticulation or some kind of guttural sound from one of the actors. It kind of makes something sweet and hysterical a tiny bit funnier still.

  • @woodoven Oh my gosh I never noticed that haha how funny

  • @Berzirk

    That's awesome man

  • One Steve Martin's finest work. Another great film of his that rarely gets any play is "Dead Men Dont Wear Plaid" it's hilarious.

  • OMG LOL SOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!! I've never seen this movie but I am going to especially after seeing this!! :) I love Bernadette Peters and Steve Martin and I can only imagine that they are hysterical together!

  • Steve Carell from the Office often has the same cadence that Steve Martin does in this scene

  • This is a true story. I used this part of the movie for my proposal. I altered it slightly to be more relevant to us, but I actually busted it out as part of my marriage proposal. Fast forward many years later, we've got two kids and living happily ever after...and by the way...the new phonebook is here!

  • I've heard or read that this scene took a lot of shots to get because Bernadette Peters kept losing it. Totally understandable. I just laugh thinking about this scene!

  • does anyone have a clip of when he beats up the guys for using the N-word?

  • Around 1:29 her necklace starts to gleam as if her breathing is going a little funny. That's the only point where I can tell she wants to smile and burst into laughter.

  • Hey you fucking idiots. Great job on watermarking this. Great contribution. Why. Don't. You. Go. Fuck. Yourselves.?

  • @yeahimshrod What the hell is your problem?

  • i could not have gone through that scene with a straight face...

"i have it wirtten down i can show it to you tomorrow if you wanna see it." Classic!

  • Hilarious, and actually mostly ad libbed! Steve is one of my comic heroes. :)

  • Love this film xDD best scene !!

  • I wonder how many takes they needed before they got through it with a straight face.

  • You almost look dead. LMAO

  • BEST CLIP ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

  • I'm trying to find the rap song someone made with the words from this scene...can anyone help???

  • I know this clip is 2 min. and 17 sec.

But it felt like 4 min. and 23 sec.

But the second time it felt like 1 min. and 57 sec.

Now it just feels like 2 min.

But after the ninth time it felt like 5 min and 7 sec.

    But on the tenth...........

  • hahahahahahhah, very good.

  • @MatthiewBaisley Genius posting!!!!! but don't forget we just had a 3 day weekend which made it seem like like another 4 min and 17 sec.

  • @MatthiewBaisley ha ha ha ha ha ha best comment ive ever seen on youtube

  • @MatthiewBaisley Seemed more like 4 min. and 22 seconds to me.

But then the second time it felt like 1 min. and 56 sec.

Now it feels like 1 min.....

  • @MatthiewBaisley classic

  • ahahaha

  • Remember when Steve Martin WAS Steve Martin?

  • Awesome. I love that scene, and Steve Martin, and The Jerk. Brilliant material written by a truly brilliantly, funny man. Also love the 'You belong to me' duo on the beach.

  • when I first saw this I thought she was dead haha

  • I slit the sheet, the sheet I slit, and on the slitted sheet I sit - this sounds quite Relaxing! LOL

  • u almost look dead!!!!!!!! LOLLLL

  • One of my favourite movies of all time. Steve Martin at his genius best. *****

  • My favorite scene in this movie, so funny, I love it.

  • My fav scene in the movie. I near pissed myself laughing the first and second time I saw it.

  • Kevin Mongeon is a first-class jerk

  • This movie has so many good scenes, this one is very funny to redo in real life situations. I've practiced it. People think you're nuts, it's hilarious.

  • They're probably right :) LOL

    Amazing scene...

  • why does nbc keep taking down my clip of the jerk? why is yours allowed?

  • I too have the movie on DVD!!!

  • I have the whole movie on DVD!!!

  • good thing you didnt have only half the movie in dvd!

  • what an acomplishment

  • How the hell she not laugh at him saying all that shit! lol Hahaha Steve Martin is a nut!

  • Others here have said that it took several takes before she could get through it. I've never seen any outtakes, but I don't doubt it.

You can't really see it here, but if you watch the DVD, she's wearing a pendant that catches the light. It gives the only indication of her inner torment as she struggled to hold it together...

  • Correction: at 1:27 you can see her flashing "HELP ME" in Morse code.

  • everyone go to IMDB and give this movie more than an 8 rating . Its a 6.2 now.

  • does anyone have the entire movie

  • just buy it ya cheap bastard

  • best scene in the movie

    fucking funny!

  • "you look so beautiful and peaceful you almost look dead" rofl!!!!!!!!!!!! i love this movie

  • one of the best scenes in the movie

  • This is a 100% true story. My wife and I loved this movie, so much so that when I proposed to her, I had written the whole part out and started reading this off, with a couple of personalized parts. I'm a goof so she still wasn't sure I was being serious until I pointed to a spot on the beach where I'd written "Marry Me" without her knowing. We invited Steve to the wedding, but the prick didn't even RSVP. Haa haa. Good times. We'll always remember this scene!

  • lol did you say the stuff about the days?

so on the 7th day it seemed like a total of 5 days

    XD

  • I absolutely did. I don't remember if I quoted it from the movie or if it was catered more to our lives, but yes that part in some form was absolutely in there. "I have it written down, but I can show it to you tomorrow if you want to see it" :)

  • This is by far the best scene from this movie! So thrilled to see that it is on here!

  • i remember when this movie came out it ruled. & the behind the scenes showed burnadette cracking up each time they started this scene. it took all day.

  • hahaha I cant even watch it without cracking up - I have no idea how she did it!

Any idea where that behind the scenes can be found?

  • i used to have a vhs copy of the movie and extras. on that tape i first saw that behind the scenes clip. but recently i saw a steve martin biography (i guees you'd call it) last fall on tv. the channel i dont remember.

  • This movie is fantastic and this scene in particular is really, really sweet.

  • hahahahahaahahah, this scene is awesome!! this monologue is my audition for a school play soon. though i would be very comparable to steve martin

  • though i would NOT be very comparable to steve martin**

  • I'll bet it was hard for Bernadette Peters to keep still for this scene.

  • this is so funny. love it.

  • oh man this is great

  • "I know we've only known each other for 4 weeks and 3 days... But to me, it seems like 9weeks and 5 days." lolz, I love this scene, and I'm very impressed that she's not cracking up, cuz I woulda been...

  • It's funny you say that. She said they had to keep reshooting the scene because she kept busting up.

  • "Are you awake.....? Good...you look so beautiful and peaceful, you almost look dead." Lol....XD

  • wow! it sure is weird to find you in the comments in a random video.

  • Please refresh my memory, where have you seen me before?

  • we hated each other over some short god argument i think.

  • Hmm....sorry about that! From what I remember I was pretty quick to mouth off when I first started out here.

  • *sigh* ...they took the kitten juggling bit off of utube. anyone know where I can find it? :\

  • apparently the bit when he licks her face, she didnt know he was gonna do that, a real real reaction from her then XD jst sitting here, in silent fits of laughter, love it!

  • Brilliant!

  • "you've made me very happy" lmao

  • One of my favourite movie scenes ever. I always wondered how she got through that scene & even more so now after reading it was ad-libbed. Brilliant

  • This is my favourite scene :P

  • Fun fact: The part where he's explaining how long each day felt was 100% ad-libbed on the spot by Steve Martin himself. They just went with it. They loved it so much after that they decided to leave it in. True story.

  • but how in the world did she keep a straight face during one shot?!!

  • Earplugs.

  • Love this movie
