What a piece of crap. They should really check out this publicity hound more carefully before they put him on the air. Glad they had the FF guy on to balance him out. What is described is something called a "mesh" network. The idea has been around for a while but has a lot of practical limitations. This kind of network is already in the Bluetooth specification. It's going to take a lot more than those little boxes to make a network a government can't block.
@ehbozo The FF are strong supporters of this idea. It's basically the web hosting facebook supplies to you, only YOU'RE the one hosting it. The technical limitations are a small hurdle compared to the technology we have today.
Ya its called a router. It's nothing more then a router. You can already do this by accessing the IP of someones computer that has a web page up, ergo work stations, wireless ad hoc networks, file sharing, etc. etc.
@Arperture2008 Exactly, so why does anyone sign up for facebook for their spying, and selling of information? Why don't we take our data, and keep it to ourselves? This enables us to do just that, in a cheep easy way. It's a social networking, microblogging tool, in a box.
I need to hear more.I smell a rat called the govt. using this to actually monitor people. I cant trust our govt to honor their constitutional limitations.
@cdamauser1963 This would use encryption. The government is already doing this by comendeering your facebook, twitter, youtube, cellphone traffic, and something like this would take away control from the government.
what do you think about Aram Sinnreich's aproach on this subject? he has a vid on TED
