do you use the cine mode? or just adjust the shutter to 1/48? Please reply. the reason i ask is because when i edit using cine mode i get this ghosting effect
Whenever I use my S30 in dark situations I get terrible grain on the footage. A bunch of white speckles everywhere. Though, I notice when I lower my exposure it seems to go away. Is that what you did here? any advice?
Hi, you list "Cine Mode" and "Low Light" ... these are settings in this camera, however how do you do both? You either have to select Cine Mode, or Low Light mode? Can you elaborate? Thank you.
Hey how you doing sir i sent you an email about some questions i had so when you ever get a chance to look at it ill be most greatful (My email is Neil.Belle@yahoo.com) Thank you
@MarcAllins Yes, the WD-H58 Wide Angle Lens will fit onto a 58mm filter thread, HF S21 has a 58mm thread in front of the lens and I'm pretty sure the HF S20 does as well.
@MarcAllins Probably. Also you can just look at the front of the camera to see if there is a 58mm filter thread. I'm pretty sure it does have one, as far as I know the HF S20 is virtually identical to the HF S21 except for the size of the built in memory. But if you want a wide-angle converter lens then check out the Raynox HD 7000 Pro, I think it is a bit better than the Canon WD-H58 wide-angle converter.
@BigOrganPipes You are right the HF S21 is now discontinued, and although it is a great camcorder the HF G10 is much better. HF G10 has a superior sensor that gives much better low light performance than the HF S21, it also has more manual controls and a proper lens focus ring. HF G10 has stereo microphones and gives better sound quality. If you buy the HF G10 then you will own an excellent high end camcorder.
I am looking to buy a camcorder in the next week or so. I am very interested in making movies such as these. Which camera would you recommend that runs to about $800. I understand the S21 is a bit more than that. My question really is what would you recommend for me that will be capable of recording such short films? What do you think of the S30, R21, M41? Battery life is also important for me. What do you suggest?
If you don't mind Please give me advises, I want to buy a camera, I'll use it for filming at night such as in the club or in music concerts.
please let me know the best camera that i can buy at this moment, cause I've seen this video about a year ago. maybe you have the newest one.. please help me, many thanks.
@HiiDefinition Well done, you did a very good job up there :))

How do you manage to get the blacks so smooth? I have a Vixia HF S20 (a slightly older version of the same camera) that I use with iMovie. Whenever I export a project (always at full quality settings), the blacks turn out muddy and pixelated. However, the raw unedited footage always looks fine. Does it have to do with iMovie's exporting tech? Are Final Cut Pro's exporting features really that much better?
How did you get your night shot to look so nice without red or blue dots. Mine doesn't seem to handle dark streets well without some sort of colorful noise?
One question - I have been researching HF S200s and HF S21s and I was wondering if you knew of any obvious differences between the two? Thanks in advance.
@CassieMeder There is a difference between the 2. S200 Has no internal memory and no view finder. The S21 has 64gb internal memory and has a view finder. That is basically the only different.
Hi! Hi! I was wondering how you made the night scene look so crisp and clean. I'm buying the vixia hf s21 and wanted to know how to do that. Normally when shooting at night the iris has to be open all the way to allow all available light in. As a result the video appears really grainy. Does that not happen with the hf s21? If it does, how did you correct it? I'm going to Disney World and want to take a lot of video at night or in dark settings. Can you help me? Thank you very much!!!!
Excellent video. How did you make the "time lapse" effect with the Canon Vixia HF S21? Did you apply the effect in Final Cut Pro or did you do it in-camera?
I am about to buy the Canon vixia hf s20, but i was wondering before i do, is there any significant difference between the quality or features of the HF S21 to the S20?
Yes, I suppose so. Anyway the DSLRS definitely have a stronger sensor and will produce brighter images in low light conditions. Thanks for commenting :)

I have a Canon Vixia HF S200 and a 50mm f1.8 prime lens. Can a wide angle lens be attached to or "on top of" the 50mm lens??? The 50mm lens helps with DOF but I'd like to have a wide angle lens to be able to capture more area in my frame. Thanks for any help.
i hope someone can give me a pointer i just got HF S200 just don't know which setting to choose to get such a awesome video quality i have a iMovie and final cut Pro please help a noob :)
@JerkinIMKidZ the box came with 3 discs. 2 Discs for the PIXELA application. Disc 1 for the app, Disc 2 for registering the HF S21/20/200, whichever u have. and the third Disc is for photo apps. All the CD's seem to be for Windows only. After installing all that junk, I've tried connecting the camcorder straight to the laptop, and a driver/software search window pops up, and when it searches for one, it finds none. That was on PC. As for MAC, I connected the camcorder to it with USB and (cont.)
@JerkinIMKidZ (cont.) it doesn't read it at all. So far my luck has been resorted to the SD Card, which you can record videos into it, and put it into your PC/Mac if you have a SD Card reader on it. The videos are in .MTS format, which you'll need VLC Player to view them. I'm guessing that Final Cut Pro or Vegas Pro can work with these files, but I'm not sure yet, since i use Adobe Premiere Pro and it wont work with .MTS files. Sooo.. yeah. Everything else on tech specs is really good so far.
@TheRmiBoys check the file type on the actual camcorder...it should be recording with H.264 compression which premiere does recognize. Not sure though, I don't have the camera but am interested in it
@coolboarder44 its not the file type that's the problem. its the problem of having the PC/Mac recognize the device when you connect it to it. I plug it in, it comes with no driver, and there's not driver for it available online. so im resorting to recording onto the SD Cards instead of the internal memory itself since im not able to tranfer them from the camcorder straight to the computer.
@vivideos79 use SD Cards. im having the same exact problem. put an SD Card in, then from the standby/record mode, on the screen press "FUNC." then "MENU", then go to the 3rd Tab (Shape of a tool), and scroll down to "Initialize (memory icon/SD Card icon). press the box arrow to the right of it. then choose either "Mem. Card A" or "Mem. Card B", depending on which slot you put the SD Card in. Then press "Initialize", then press "Yes". After that, your SD Card is ready to be recorded onto (cont.)
@vivideos79 (cont. from previous comment.) now press "FUNC." again from the main recording screen, then "MENU", and this time go to the 2nd tab (Film icon), and the third selection is "Rec Media for Movies". select it by pressing the Memory icon next to it. and now pick either the SD Card icons "A" or "B", again depending on which you put it in. recording is set to the SD card now. when you put the SD Card into your computer, the video files are in .MTS format, which you will need (cont.)
@vivideos79 (cont. from second comment) VLC Media Player, which you can find on Google and it's free. To find the .MTS files, put the SD Card in your computer, then go to My Computer> SD Card> PRIVATE> AVCHD> BDMV> STREAM. Just transfer them onto your computer, and you're set.
I like the scene at 1:05, the time lapse with moving cars! I have one questione: if you set the shutter speed at 1/2, is there the possibility to catch long light trails? I'm interested in this kind of effect!
i am planning to get this camera very soon to start shooting more professional looking short films and music videos. the current camera i have now, succ's in the dark and doesn't shot in 24fps to get the cinema look. major let down. can't wait to get it.
You have to understand that even though DSLR's have some strong points, they also have major negatives. For example the horrible rolling shutter, you will never get professional, useable footage without using a tripod. The only way to solve this is by spending another $1000 for a handheld rig. Another negative is that the footage taken from a DSLR will be squeezed down to fit HD, which means you'll loose detail and get harsh edges. If you want the best of both worlds, check out the Nex-VG10.
@HiiDefinition Rolling Shutter only comes iinto a factor when ur panning left to right at a fair speed.
and at that programs have effects to get rid of rolling shutter. Honestly Unless you buy something like a RedOne video quality wont look any better then a DSLR. And i bought a Shoudler rig that would work for alot of Dslrs and Camera for $32.95. Plan and Smiple DSLR's are taken over the Video industry by storm but professional still use camera such as the RedOne
@HiiDefinition Thanks for the info on the continuous feature! I didn't know it had one. Is there is an easier way to make this into a motion film than adding one photo/frame at a time?
Notice how much black is in all of his videos. Don't be afraid of black! That's how you get rid of noise. Since you didn't shoot this, it looks great to you (which it does) but if you shot it you would compare it to what the naked eye sees and try to match that, and that's when the noise comes in. Like HiiDef shows, and I always say, don't be afraid of BLACK!!!
Great quality, I love it :) but I think you can't get this result without the lens ? I'd like to buy this camcorder, but i'm wondering if I should buy the lens too, which would make the price a bit too high ^^
anyways, love it, this looks really professional imo
You definitely do not need an external lens, but it always helps to get a larger angle in landscape situations. However it will help in creating brighter images in low light situations, since the lens acts like a funnel sucking in more light than without it.
How did you get rid of the lines? When I film at night or in the dark, I get these slightly grainy purple lines across the video, and the quality isn't good.
Do you have one of the camcorders in this title? If so, make sure you are using cine mode, 24p, and 24MBPS to get the best possible quality in lowlight. Also play around with the exposure to hide some of the grain.
Is that the most light you could get out of the camcorder for example when you are around the grass on the sidewalk at about 1:14 does the camcorder have anything that would make the b/g at least see able?
You seem a little disappointed, I purposely lowered the exposure in some shots to hide the noise, and on top of that the color correction made the image appear a bit darker than the original.
@HiiDefinition cool, I wanted to buy a camcorder which uses AVCHD. But i heard that AVCHD is harder to work with in Sony Vegas and Adobe After Effects. But how did you make your video run smoothly and get great quality in the AVCHD or .mts format. Did you convert the file or was there something else done.
I imported the filed directly through FCP, which automatically converts the files in quicktime. From there, the file can be used with AE CS5 Sony Vegas, etc.
Well done video...3 cheers. Question, was wondering how a surround sound mic would work for filming very loud auto racing? Would it be better to not use the surround sound mic? i'm aiming for as realistic sound reproduction as possible with the HFS 200. Keep those videos coming!
Well, surround sound will definitely produce more realistic sound over a standard shotgun mic. The sound levels can always be adjusted on the camera, so if it ever gets to loud, you can lower it.
Video looks great. i have some questions. I am looking to start my own fishing show and I am tech. savvy but don't know much about camcorders. I need an HD one that is pretty easy to use but also im not afraid to get dirty if you know what i mean. What would you suggest? Also i have adobe premiere will that be good for editing? Please help!
**Hey please help me out..I am a member of a local band and i wanted to shoot pro HD videos..I brought a canon vixia h10.. I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT...Like can you tell me what settings to put it on to have a 1080p full HD video...settings like auto fucus, white balance and all that stuff...PLEASE HELP
So, how exactly are you getting that "trailing" effect from the cars after putting everything in fast motion? It it just that, by putting the scene in faster motion? AND how are you getting that film look? If you don't mind me asking that is.
Thanks! I'm an outdoor photographer, a far cry from NYC, but I'm upgrading because I need that low-light capability and I've had good experience w/ Canon (I dropped my FS100 in a creek and it still works great).
If you shoot at 24p native what sequence setting do you put the footage in and what frame rate do you export with? And if you shoot at 24p in 60i aka "Cinemode" what sequence setting do you put it in and what frame rate do you export with?
Just curious and I'm sure others are, but did you do apply any special filters or effects in Post to get the picture to look so great? Or did you just simply import the video, add some transitions and upload it?
nvm the video answered a part of my question :p , but if you dont mind answering the rest thanks

nice video but too much self promotion ;)
seems it gives pretty dark image, but there is almost no noise.
however I think that for such a video, without necessity of using a background sound, eos 550D of 600D could be better.
but for a documentary or a portable gear for a video journalist it seems a good choice!
pretty good music too!

@mj12agent Nope, these are the same cameras. The Vixia is the North American name, Legria is the world model

@TheRmiBoys ? how
JerkinIMKidZ 11 months ago
@JerkinIMKidZ the box came with 3 discs. 2 Discs for the PIXELA application. Disc 1 for the app, Disc 2 for registering the HF S21/20/200, whichever u have. and the third Disc is for photo apps. All the CD's seem to be for Windows only. After installing all that junk, I've tried connecting the camcorder straight to the laptop, and a driver/software search window pops up, and when it searches for one, it finds none. That was on PC. As for MAC, I connected the camcorder to it with USB and (cont.)
TheRmiBoys 11 months ago
@JerkinIMKidZ (cont.) it doesn't read it at all. So far my luck has been resorted to the SD Card, which you can record videos into it, and put it into your PC/Mac if you have a SD Card reader on it. The videos are in .MTS format, which you'll need VLC Player to view them. I'm guessing that Final Cut Pro or Vegas Pro can work with these files, but I'm not sure yet, since i use Adobe Premiere Pro and it wont work with .MTS files. Sooo.. yeah. Everything else on tech specs is really good so far.
TheRmiBoys 11 months ago
@TheRmiBoys check the file type on the actual camcorder...it should be recording with H.264 compression which premiere does recognize. Not sure though, I don't have the camera but am interested in it
coolboarder44 11 months ago
@coolboarder44 its not the file type that's the problem. its the problem of having the PC/Mac recognize the device when you connect it to it. I plug it in, it comes with no driver, and there's not driver for it available online. so im resorting to recording onto the SD Cards instead of the internal memory itself since im not able to tranfer them from the camcorder straight to the computer.
TheRmiBoys 11 months ago
helppp meeee!!! i cant download the videoclips to my computer?????
vivideos79 11 months ago
@vivideos79 use SD Cards. im having the same exact problem. put an SD Card in, then from the standby/record mode, on the screen press "FUNC." then "MENU", then go to the 3rd Tab (Shape of a tool), and scroll down to "Initialize (memory icon/SD Card icon). press the box arrow to the right of it. then choose either "Mem. Card A" or "Mem. Card B", depending on which slot you put the SD Card in. Then press "Initialize", then press "Yes". After that, your SD Card is ready to be recorded onto (cont.)
TheRmiBoys 11 months ago
@vivideos79 (cont. from previous comment.) now press "FUNC." again from the main recording screen, then "MENU", and this time go to the 2nd tab (Film icon), and the third selection is "Rec Media for Movies". select it by pressing the Memory icon next to it. and now pick either the SD Card icons "A" or "B", again depending on which you put it in. recording is set to the SD card now. when you put the SD Card into your computer, the video files are in .MTS format, which you will need (cont.)
TheRmiBoys 11 months ago
@vivideos79 (cont. from second comment) VLC Media Player, which you can find on Google and it's free. To find the .MTS files, put the SD Card in your computer, then go to My Computer> SD Card> PRIVATE> AVCHD> BDMV> STREAM. Just transfer them onto your computer, and you're set.

When you shoot in low light do you use manual focus at all?....other than that Great video!
mmsotster 11 months ago
I like the scene at 1:05, the time lapse with moving cars! I have one questione: if you set the shutter speed at 1/2, is there the possibility to catch long light trails? I'm interested in this kind of effect!
gambinifra 11 months ago
i am planning to get this camera very soon to start shooting more professional looking short films and music videos. the current camera i have now, succ's in the dark and doesn't shot in 24fps to get the cinema look. major let down. can't wait to get it.
stevesap89 11 months ago
@stevesap89 NOOOO GET A DSLR SOMETHING LIKE A CANON T2I T3I OR 60D AND YOUR VIDEO'S WILL LOOK SO MUCH CLEARER
IkeyTV 11 months ago
You have to understand that even though DSLR's have some strong points, they also have major negatives. For example the horrible rolling shutter, you will never get professional, useable footage without using a tripod. The only way to solve this is by spending another $1000 for a handheld rig. Another negative is that the footage taken from a DSLR will be squeezed down to fit HD, which means you'll loose detail and get harsh edges. If you want the best of both worlds, check out the Nex-VG10.
HiiDefinition 11 months ago
@HiiDefinition Rolling Shutter only comes iinto a factor when ur panning left to right at a fair speed.
and at that programs have effects to get rid of rolling shutter. Honestly Unless you buy something like a RedOne video quality wont look any better then a DSLR. And i bought a Shoudler rig that would work for alot of Dslrs and Camera for $32.95. Plan and Smiple DSLR's are taken over the Video industry by storm but professional still use camera such as the RedOne

Canon HFS200 or HFS20? For parkour and freerunning and action shots.

Hi. Can you tell me how u did Time Lapse on s21? Im owner from last 2 days and still dont now. Are u use timer remote or something?
midhurstuk 1 year ago
The time lapse can be done with the continuos capture feature where you can either hold down the photo button on the camcorder or on the remote.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago 2
@HiiDefinition Thanks for the info on the continuous feature! I didn't know it had one. Is there is an easier way to make this into a motion film than adding one photo/frame at a time?

Canon Vixia HF S21 Or Canon Rebel T2i ??
IkeyTV 1 year ago
Canon Rebel T2i
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition i agree
IkeyTV 1 year ago
Notice how much black is in all of his videos. Don't be afraid of black! That's how you get rid of noise. Since you didn't shoot this, it looks great to you (which it does) but if you shot it you would compare it to what the naked eye sees and try to match that, and that's when the noise comes in. Like HiiDef shows, and I always say, don't be afraid of BLACK!!!
paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 1 year ago
Great quality, I love it :) but I think you can't get this result without the lens ? I'd like to buy this camcorder, but i'm wondering if I should buy the lens too, which would make the price a bit too high ^^
anyways, love it, this looks really professional imo
Minimus76 1 year ago
You definitely do not need an external lens, but it always helps to get a larger angle in landscape situations. However it will help in creating brighter images in low light situations, since the lens acts like a funnel sucking in more light than without it.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
How did you get rid of the lines? When I film at night or in the dark, I get these slightly grainy purple lines across the video, and the quality isn't good.
How did you change this?
emirsia 1 year ago
Do you have one of the camcorders in this title? If so, make sure you are using cine mode, 24p, and 24MBPS to get the best possible quality in lowlight. Also play around with the exposure to hide some of the grain.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition Yes, I have the HF S20.
emirsia 1 year ago
hey dude, is the wide-angle lens really necessary? is it possible to get the same "wide" look in post?
wonderwall135 1 year ago
The wide angle lens and the widescreen bars have nothing to do with each other.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
Is that the most light you could get out of the camcorder for example when you are around the grass on the sidewalk at about 1:14 does the camcorder have anything that would make the b/g at least see able?
Griffin2301 1 year ago
You seem a little disappointed, I purposely lowered the exposure in some shots to hide the noise, and on top of that the color correction made the image appear a bit darker than the original.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
What class and brand of card are you using? I ask cause I just got the Hf-s20.
hulllewis0817 1 year ago
Class 8.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
I use "Patriot" and it is a class 8 memory card.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
Are you using a class 10 card? Or what kind do you use? I ask cause I finally got the Hf-s20.

Did you use mac or PC to edit? do you know which works best for this camera?

Does this camcorder use avchd or hdv.
Untouchable909090 1 year ago
AVCHD, also known as the dreaded .mts
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
@HiiDefinition cool, I wanted to buy a camcorder which uses AVCHD. But i heard that AVCHD is harder to work with in Sony Vegas and Adobe After Effects. But how did you make your video run smoothly and get great quality in the AVCHD or .mts format. Did you convert the file or was there something else done.
Untouchable909090 1 year ago
I imported the filed directly through FCP, which automatically converts the files in quicktime. From there, the file can be used with AE CS5 Sony Vegas, etc.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
Well done video...3 cheers. Question, was wondering how a surround sound mic would work for filming very loud auto racing? Would it be better to not use the surround sound mic? i'm aiming for as realistic sound reproduction as possible with the HFS 200. Keep those videos coming!
MuscleMaxZ1 1 year ago
Well, surround sound will definitely produce more realistic sound over a standard shotgun mic. The sound levels can always be adjusted on the camera, so if it ever gets to loud, you can lower it.

Video looks great. i have some questions. I am looking to start my own fishing show and I am tech. savvy but don't know much about camcorders. I need an HD one that is pretty easy to use but also im not afraid to get dirty if you know what i mean. What would you suggest? Also i have adobe premiere will that be good for editing? Please help!

quashaun123456789 1 year ago
MXP, cine mode, 24p, auto white balance, etc.
HiiDefinition 1 year ago
So, how exactly are you getting that "trailing" effect from the cars after putting everything in fast motion? It it just that, by putting the scene in faster motion? AND how are you getting that film look? If you don't mind me asking that is.
OneNutWonder27 1 year ago

Wow I cant wait to get this Camcorder cuss me and my friend are doing a movie. now we can get that movie feel without having a high budget
Mikesmooth49 1 year ago
Just curious and I'm sure others are, but did you do apply any special filters or effects in Post to get the picture to look so great? Or did you just simply import the video, add some transitions and upload it?

Well, I've clearly stated that in the video at 0:31 and in the description ;)
