I had just turned 2 when CBBC first started showing 'Brum'. And to think that it's 20 years old this year? That's mad, wish they'd release the classic Brum with Toyah Wilcox narrating on DVD, none of this over PC'ed rubbish that they've done to him now! Bring back Brum!
I remember watching the cbbc September new programmes line up, I would've been 7, seeing this made me want to throw up, tooo many memories, too many flooding back aghhh ! Oh yeah as we all know TV sucks now, thank fuck for youtube
lol, i was just about to say the same thing until i scrolled down and saw this. I imagine T2 had just come out seeing as this was from 1991, but still.. not for kiddies.
As nice as it was to see all the great new programmes starting in the Autumn, trails like that did also mean that it was soon time to go back to school so used to fill me with a sense of dread
yeah, that's cable, not satellite. Don't use the American term for that, as they haven#t bothered correcting themselves. Cable TV - cables under the ground. Satellite - satellites in space.
When I say that Sky was expensive, I'm not saying the rich were the ones who bought it. The poor are always the ones who buy such things, because a) the rich don't watch much TV, b) they see it as a waste of time and c) the programmes on Sky wouldn't really appeal to their tastes anyway. they're different!!!
I am aware of the difference between cable and satellite, but your comment was that most kids wouldnt know who Bart Simpson was because they wouldnt ave access to it. By 1996 a large precentage of people had access to Sky one via either "Sky" satellite or cable.
And when you say the rich dont watc much tv and Sky wouldnt appeal to their tastes is daft...unless your talking about Royalty and those types, but theres a huge difference between people without a lot of money and multi-millionaires.
yeah, now. But I'm talking about *at the time*, they wouldn't have been interested. I know this because a) I've studied this kind of audience and b) at the time I was a child in a traditionally middle class household. 40 houses on our street, just 3 of them had satellite in 1997.
@blackdice23 yeah good point, those days apart from simpsons MTV and unheard of american comedies (later Premier League) SKY wasn't that great. SKY represented Thatcheritre materialism, more is better. BBC had programming quality over quantity of channels, and gave health people space and time to live outside the telly box. Which couch potato kids of the 2000s miss out on.
I agree. Sky didn't really take off until 1992 with the Premier League football rights. Even then not many people had it. We got cable in 1994. With regards The Simpsons whlist I had not seen an episode on TV until 1994 I had seen them on video in 1991. I knew who they were because of The Simpsons arcade game also. It was odd as not many people had really seen it but we knew who they were because of merchandise sold at the time.
I had the opening of one on the old channel, someone else has got several segments posted of the final episode, same one as I had recorded. I remember the mousetrap game aswell, fantastic.

I bet most of the viewers on this didn't even know who Bart Simpson was - The Simpsons wasn't shown on terrestrial TV here in the UK till 1996!!!
AidanLunn 3 years ago 4
Yeh but most people had sky by this time...the simpsons were huge here well b4 1996
suthes 2 years ago
That's not true actually. Sky was launched in 1989 and was expensive.
It didn't become popular until around the mid-late 90s, especially with the introduction of Sky Digital.
So only a few people had Sky at this time, which of course was on the old Sky Analogue system.
AidanLunn 2 years ago 2
Well i had cable tv in 1993 which had sky one and we were poor! and i had a bart simpson tshirt way b4 that

We had 4 channels and a crummy telly because we spent time outside as a family, not watching TV all day like poor bastards on income support.

Don't agree with that, Sky was expensive and limited. Only worth having for The Simpsons and the football.
blackdice23 2 years ago 2
@AidanLunn
oh yeah. you're right. It was broadcast on Sky until that then. Simpsons was pretty popular though.. the merchandise, a No. 1 song in charts aswell
