@comicalley5 you played on Beginner mode which only lets you play the first 3 stages and when you die you retain some power ups but you loose some everytime you die

its really stupid to run out of fuel in a middle of a fight.

Yeah, and perhaps the most stupid part is that the ship exploded. I mean... think of how many accidents we all would have suffered if our cars blew up when it ran up. Overheated lasers could do such thing. And well... boredom can be very lethal too. Maybe it ran out of fuel because it expected to kill or be killed by the ship fast enough. Maybe master brain (the last boss) executed it for making a phail out of itself.

All bosses in Gradius blow up on their own within a certain time.

Big Core MK III shoots from the rear in the SNES version as well, and used more extensivly in Gradius V.

But I think that because of the overal difficulty revamp in 5, the self destruct timer was taken out.

Hmmm interesting. Do you know why at one point it moves all the way forward and starts shooting at you from its rear? (on a side note, the centre laser doesn't have any visible gun...)

I think it was a part of it how it was programmed, if you played fair with no tricks, it would eventually do just that anyway.
