Firstly, symbolism isn't about the practical effect of the hour itself you moron. It is not good enough to say that it symbolically failed because it uses more power. That is a practical complaint.

Earth Hour is a symbolic attempt to get people thinking of ways to reduce consumption.
Reduced power consumption doesn't necessarily mean less technology. It just shows an awareness that we need technologies to consume less. This leads to advancements in technology, driven by an educated market.
Energy saving light bulbs and hybrid cars are just 2 examples.

The "symbolic" act of Earth hour is by virtue of the definition of the word, Symbolic, (I think the definition is so powerful it doesn't need mentioning here), implying that EH doesn't actually save power, but is aimed at increasing awareness of the NEED to save power. Technology is wonderful and amazing but shouldnt we always strive to make it more efficient ? Do you turn off your monitor when your not using it Rick ? Or do you leave all the lights on in your house during the day and leave the TV permanantly on ? If so... why ?
