  • What the fuck is an "islamist"?

  • surely rick has been cleverly conjured by a rival party to discredit ACT? because it's clearly working, ACT delivers big on facepalms

  • How many people here use petrol powered candles?

No, I joke. But the most common types of candles are made from beeswax or soy wax.

  • @hspopple Doesn't change the fact that they are more pollutant then energy sources in NZ

@RisingStarPaintball Geothermal is the second largest source of energy in NZ, first is hydro, both of which are renewable

This guy is right in the first half of the video, second half he is a tosser, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Overall he is twat

  • Dumb ass why don't you look around I don't know were you get these ...uh facts from by the world has evolved from that so why don't you open your eyes and see what earth hour is actually about

  • one on NZ's biggest generators of electricity is geothermal, and hydro does have a big impact on our country... spoon!

  • Is...is this guy serious?? I'm lost for words...Global Warming != the Apocalypse. Wtf man

  • The whole point of Earth Hour is to raise the awareness of our ever increasing consumption of non-renewable resources and to try and make a change so that this so called 'apocalyptic end of the world' never happens. The point is not to stop using technology. It is to find a better way of using the energy we have to promote the creation of new technology that will help us in the future when our energy reserves run out. Because they will run out. It's just a matter of time.

  • he misses the point completely - conserving our resources means we're less vulnerable in the face of disaster - and we can continue to develop technology etc etc.. SIGH

  • Comment removed

  • I think the point of earth hour or what ever the term is, was not to take out electricity all together. It is to reduce electricity as it would help prevent climate change? I don't think a candle is going to be the first thing we use. Why not use one light instead of three? Catch my drift... because i don't think your ever going to understand LOL

  • sorry, what is your argument? Because you don't seem to be explaining it.

  • What a hacking Tard! I want to stab you in the eyes with used tampons

  • Your by far the worst thing i've seen on the internet.

  • Are you serious? Tries to explain that the symbolism is rubbish, then brings up completely unrelated points that have no relation to the symbolism.

  • How can democracy be the best possible system when he has an equal vote?

  • i clicked on this video just to downvote.... you are a moron

  • What a twat.....

  • @johnstubbs2010 Couldn't have said it better....

  • DEFINITELY A VIRGIN

  • U SIR ARE AN IDIOT

  • NZ is fucked if Genghis Khan's hordes come after you guys. Just saying.

  • On three fun loving levels this guys a retard.

  • You are a fucking twat

  • Everything you said is wrong..Everything

  • Comment removed

  • I think my IQ just dropped by 15 points.

  • Tomorrow, Hiroshima, the Islamists, all of Genghis Khan's hordes, are coming, tomorrow.

    Wait, what?

    Something about power saving?

Those Genghis Khan dudes, we best watch out!

    Also, yeah, stop the video.

  • wow this guy is by far the dumbest person i have seen in a long time he is so simple i cant help but feel sorry for him. its like a retarded kid working out how to post a video on youtube

  • I'm glad you're so passionate in what you believe in. Rodney Hide must be so proud.

  • Firstly, symbolism isn't about the practical effect of the hour itself you moron. It is not good enough to say that it symbolically failed because it uses more power. That is a practical complaint.

What the symbolism is actually about is showing that there are a bunch of people on this earth who care about the environment. This sends a symbolic message to government that the public is interested in the issue. Can't believe how much you missed the point.

  • @thethe6

    Cut the shit man.

You sound just like the politicians that have been talking about this shit over and over for the last decade.

We already have the technology tto harm the environment less we just need to implement it.

Here's what the government needs to do: put words into actions.

  • i remember when I was a university student who thought I had the answer to everything, too... fortunately i graduated when i was 23, got a life a haircut and a far better taste in T-shirts.

  • Candles may be hydrocarbons, but they aren't made from petrolleum at all. they're made from the same stuff as soap. there is no way that they can have an impact on the enviroment, because they burn cleanly.

Also, computers and fridges use the same amount of energy when turning on as they do in any other case.

As for the rest of that, PLEASE stop masturbating in the corner behind your laptop and look around you. you may be shocked.

  • Strange according to wikipedia 32.8% of our power generated is fossil energy, and yes, that includes coal. Fo real?!?! Hiroshima, the communists, the Islamists and all of Ghengis Khan's hordes! sound more like a FAIL than an Armaggedon.

  • What. A. Prick....

  • He's a very disturbed little boy....

  • Rick Giles needs to be sterilized. there, i said it.

  • Rick Giles, you are one STUPID FUCKING IDIOT!! What a moron, not an active brain cell in that ego-sized head of yours I bet.

    DICKHEAD.

  • couple of cans short of a six pack that man!

  • I hate it when they turn off my stop-bank for earth hour - it would suck if it flooded right then - we would be screwed and have to become communists....

  • RICK GILES YOU'RE RIGHT... We need smart thinking and better technology to beat climate change. However the ability to think is something that you clearly lack! No one is suggesting we shun technology. Creating technology that consumes less is vital for our future.

PS: Your a hilarious douche! You even make left wing politicians look smart.

  • "Hiroshima, the communists, the Islamists and all of Ghengis Khan's hordes are coming in Global Warming Armaggedon" you are a deluded idiot. You are also missing the point of Earth Hour's existence completely. It is "raising awareness" of how peoples excessive consumption of our finite resources, such as electricity, is putting the planet and humanity at risk of collapse. From the looks of it you've already consumed more than your fair share of resources, quit while you're ahead douche

  • I think this just proves how much of a complete fuckwit munter you have to be to be affiliatted with the Act party.

P.s you make Karl Pilkington look like a genius

  • substitution effect! dude thats so economics 101 - considering we are only talking about 1 hour comparing energy used within an hour to "the ecological crisis" or as you said - genghis khan's hordes arriving is VERY STUPID. Go do some maths rick - learn how to calcutate watts of energy used/generated for differing energy types over time - cos actually if you did your homework you might contribute to a robust debate - which would ACTUALLY BE USEFUL

  • your a mofo idiot!!

The world isnt going to end in an hour?

No one is going to listen to you, you dum shit!

  • Why is it that the real geniuses in the world are all right-leaning? Bush, Palin, this guy, they're all morons!

  • Fuck your stupid...

  • I've never seen so man people on youtube with the same opinion. Everyone hear knows that this guy is an embarrassment. Upper cut yourself Rick, and go have sex for the first time.

  • @helpfuljoe apparently he has a kid....i feel for that kid!

  • wat a knob.

  • Lol 101/109 thumbs down. I think this guy just likes to hear the sound of his own voice! I have honestly never seen someone spout so much shiat!

  • THE POINT OF EARTH HOUR IS TO RAISE AWARENESS YOU DUMB FUCK not to save the earth in one hour . IGNORANT FAT AND UGLY

  • rick giles.. you're a dick.

  • He's a narcissistic nut job but very entertaining :D

  • I just voted (thumbs down) on this clip and youtube asked me "Would you like to report this video as inappropriate?"

    Yes, Yes i would...

  • some truth in ya but ur bloody ignorant. act will never have my vote.

  • Quit politics or I quit this country.

  • I am definatly not voting ACT next year.

  • @mknzwoot Im never voting act ever! (Because of this guy)

  • I think this guy must work for the Labour party or something...

What you call the "Earth Hour" approach is completely based in science. Ever heard of ecology?

I can't even begin to shoot holes in your argument. We'd be here all day (or year).

But seriously, keep going. It's great comic relief!

  • seriously, keep going Rick. I too think that electricity will save us from the communists!

  • hahaha oh my gosh. a 12 year old could pull apart your sad excuse for an arguement and flush it down the toilet. this is fantasticly stupid.

  • This guy is the greatest comedic talent of our generation...

  • I'm certain that in a few years from now in Rick's autobiography, he is going to reveal how he was actually a a mole planted by the far left, who's sole ambition was to wreak havoc and disharmony amongst Act's grass-roots organisations.

  • Communists? Islamists? What does that have to do with global warming? What does he think global warming is?

  • @imperialmoose I agree. He says that his disbelief in global warming can be conceded but it just can't. His idea that global warming doesn't exist is probably what drives him to think that we should be using more power, because he doesn't think that doing so will have an effect on the environment and can only benefit for us.

  • Communists? Islamists? What does that have to do with global warming? What does he think global warming is?

  • Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. He doesn't understand it at all... What a fool.

  • I appreciate the extent of this guys flawed logic. If he were preaching this on the street I'd give him a dollar out of pity

  • I thought it was so powerful that you didn't need to talk about it?

  • Is it just me or is he blue? Like literally.

  • I can't believe that people actually follow what this guy says, he's such an idiot.

  • Is he real??? If not then good job. If he is then he is not sharing his thoughts, he is rather trying to regurgitate some of his lecturers ideas, rather unsuccessfully too.

  • It was funny when this guy said to Oliver Driver that he had conceded it was crap when it didn't say it at all haha,so funny.

  • LOL!

  • You have no logic at all. I hope you're taking the piss. Go get an education. Oh and some manners. Gosh.

  • Lol you honestly are a fuck. You are one of them people who acts like nerd but you really arn't smart enough to be one. Get a education and some common sense.

  • "I think my argument is so powerful that we can concede all of that"

Ahhh no. And yes we understand you now...

We understand that you and logic were separated at birth.

  • After you said that your argument was so powerful that you didn't need to talk about it, I was with you. I respect pope-like levels of infallibility. However, then you opened your mouth and tried to explain. It turns out you lied to me Rick. You lied to me. It hurts.

  • @edosan1983 There, there, it'll all be ok, you just cry yourself to sleep

  • This guy is the biggest dumbass ive seen in a while. And Im sorry, but when was the candle ever classed as a "non renewable source"?? considering its wax and a piece of string. It doesnt suprise me at all that he is with ACT party. This guy is just full of shits and giggles.

  • I'd never heard of this fella before so I suppose he achieved something. Too stupid for words is he a comedian?

  • Oh Bro, get some brain.

  • He sounds like a future Prime Minister or at least, one like his present master "tail wagging the dog" thingi ... I only thought that we had these ones back in my home country but NZ is competing with some of its own version with my home versions. Thank you for making me feel at home.

  • "Ok tomorrow Hiroshima, The communists, the islamists and I don't know, all of Genghis Khans hordes are coming tomorrow to crush us all in global warming armageddon."

Well they would be if it was a well-researched fact. Climate change is. You can call it global warming armageddon if you want to be cute.

    Option 1:

"You play possum, you turn your lights off, your power down, you blame technology for the state that we're in"

    But that's not their posistion.

    Option 2:

    Use up resources? Nice.

  • Wow. What is incredibly sad here is that he is even wrong about turning lights on uses more power. Electricity doesn't work that way. He is regurgitating a myth that came from those old flouescent starters that would hum. As I said though, thats a myth, electricity doesnt work that way.

  • Your parents must be so proud.

  • @nicknztw aw shit lol. sarcasim ftw. his mum was prob thinkin while watching this " Fuck it, why did I have to smoke pot while pregnant"

  • knob

  • Do you understand global warming? The point is that it isn't too late yet. If it was coming to an end tomorrow, it would be utterly pointless turning the lights off, but it's not. Leaving your lights on and watching TV isn't going to stop it. And that science and technology thing you were talking and about? The solution they have is to reduce consumption, not some magical make-it-all-better machine.

  • Rick is tool on three fun loving levels. Let's do a whip around to get him deported to, oh I don't know let's say America. Hey Rick would you go to America again? Or would you be deported from the states like the last time you were there. Douche bag.

  • @nikadma The Rick and Ray Comfort show!!! Love it, great idea.

  • this is HILARIOUS.

    you're an idiot.

Why would the Muslims and Genghis Khan's court be coming in the apocalypse to take the world over?? I don't understand your logic in the argument at all whatsoever. Probably because there is NO logic in your argument whatsoever.

  • 1:15 "All they can say is that it raises awareness" Hence it being symbolic to raise awareness, dumb ass!!

  • i bet this guys from the south island

  • This is what NCEA has done for our educated youth. In a true argument both sides have the potential to swing opinions when they provide supporting evidence. Unfortunately, Rick Giles' arrogance and complete inability to provide any concrete evidence to support his claims shows him up for the complete muppet he is. ACT should be ashamed to have him represent them.

  • @teknewton

Actually, Rick is like, 30. So he did Bursary, not NCEA. But other than that you're totally right.

  • Symbolism: Representation of a concept through symbols or underlying meanings of objects or qualities.

    Get it together.

  • Give it up you tool

  • three fun loving levels hahaha

  • boom....rick your a fricken weapon hahahahaha

  • that is honestly some of the most logically flawed diatribe I have heard come out of anyones mouth in a while.

And I'm not saying that because Rick also portrays himself as an embarrassment to humans, but because I actually study logic.

Hopefully ACT takes him on as a high profile member as he will really open people up to the right wing agenda.

I wonder if the tea party movement in the states will get him over as a guest speaker.

  • lol "genghis khan's hordes" you go girl

  • You Sir, are an idiot. What an arrogant display of utter contempt to a fine cause ie. raising awareness to the EXCESS consumption of non-renewable energy sources.

Your argument is not powerful at all, quite the opposite infact. You've done nothing but make yourself look like an ignorant, obnoxious, show-boating little dickweed.

Word of advice: Think before you speak.

I could go on to argue every point that made up your nonsensical rant, but I'm running out of characters.

  • I shall contribute just like everyone else. You are an idiot that can't make an argument. Not even an economic one, assuming that's what you do. Notably, those tackling change are largely utilizing technology and therefore do no actively reject it. You sir are a moron!

  • What a dropkick. This is the future of New Zealand politics. We are all fucked. Rick Giles is an absolute FUCKTARD. Where do these people come from? Is this what happens when a kid with no mates and a skewed veiw of the world goes into politics.

  • Has he not heard of Huntley Power Station? I'm pretty sure that uses coal and gas haha.

Also, I think his argument was more powerful when he didn't talk about it.

  • Did he load this video and have his interview with Oliver 3 days too early!

  • MAAAT DAMONNN

  • You're an idiot.

You must give up on having any intelligent discussion with anyone.

  • Vote ACT guys, because they support special needs students like this guy.

  • Im guessing this div kid isnt studying Science....Anyone know what he is studying and how old he is?

  • Earth Hour is a symbolic attempt to get people thinking of ways to reduce consumption.

Reduced power consumption doesn't necessarily mean less technology. It just shows an awareness that we need technologies to consume less. This leads to advancements in technology, driven by an educated market.

Energy saving light bulbs and hybrid cars are just 2 examples.

  • Oh noes, our excessive energy consumption is exacerbating climate change! Let's use even more energy in order to combat the effects of our energy use! Flawless logic.

    NOT!

  • A case study of the logic of how these guys think, with out all them fancy words. Anyone who supports earth hour must want to live in a cave and mutter to themselves about the evils of technology is what he is saying; at least I think...What really gets me is this suppose to be his controlled uninterrupted response, almost made more sense during the interview.

  • This guy has created a very funny political characterization of the bumbling far right. He can't be serious. No one would come online to present such a weird argument to the people on the internet without trying to be ironic. I mean you would almost have to be a member of Act on campus Christchurch branch to be this idiotic...

  • @overwelmingodds hahaha love it!

  • Also, idiot, Thomas Edison didn't INVENT the lightbulb, he merely refined it. You probably also think Henry Ford invented the automobile... you sir are a fool

  • This idiot is suffering from a serious lack of intelligence... it's so painful to see that he actually believes every word he's saying...

  • i dont think people are going to turn there fridge off for a hour bro hahaha

  • pathetic

  • U make me so angry, what idiot chose you to represent them. THE WORLD IS NOT ENDING ITS WARMING UP GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. you go around thinking that your so right without even listning to the other side of the story. Do u even know the meaning of symbolisim?

  • Dude I want want this guy smokes!! LOL Earth hour its for an hour to symbolize that we give a shit about our future but I am very pro technology thus why i use the Internets!!

  • my god what a tool.....you obviously have no idea of the meaning of the term symbolism!!! you argue that earth hour is flawed symbolically as people will use candles etc...the practicalities and efficacy of earth hour to save power in that one hour has absolutely NOTHING to do with the symbolic effect that the event has...

  • you're a tool

  • Your logic is so astoundingly flawed in every single aspect, that no one will ever take you seriously. Everything about you is a joke.

  • @simonimonimon we will turn our fridges iff for a hour ? nice one mate

  • The "symbolic" act of Earth hour is by virtue of the definition of the word, Symbolic, (I think the definition is so powerful it doesn't need mentioning here), implying that EH doesn't actually save power, but is aimed at increasing awareness of the NEED to save power. That's what's symbolic about it.

  • Using the points a) it uses more energy to burn candles, and b) it uses more energy to turn on lights/appliances again would be valid if those who espouse the virtues of Earth hour were saying: do it because it saves energy. But they aren't.

  • My god, man - you are a douche.

  • Im rick giles bitch remix

  • What a Moron!

  • I like you Rick Giles because you are turning students off ACT. You are one big turn off, like earth hour.

  • i agree with ur statement about starting up and shutting down, but since its about an hour there may be a slight reduction.

  • @scavenger894

Yeah but you're supposed to turn you're lights off not you're fridge and and everything else, maybe unplub phone chargers and things like this that just burn away for no good reason

  • @chrizbie right lol didn't really get into the earth hour thing, will no for the future. in that case! this guys is a dickhead

  • @chrizbie

right lol well in that case this guy is a dickhead

  • Ya BIg Tiiime

  • I'd be more concerned with cornbon trading schemes than earth hour, really Edison hour? are you kidding?

  • Nope you still come cross as just as much of a tool as you did on Good Morning.

  • It's just so funny, of all the political things you could have chosen to pick on, you chose the one thing almost everyone felt good about.

  • His arguments power level is OVER 9000!

  • How are you at uni...I just cant believe that...what do you study??

  • GIANT RETARD ALERT...

    CasperStJames said it very well...

  • Bet the ACT party are stoked with this fools antics

  • Water puts out fires, not technology. My argument for that is so powerful, that we can concede all that...

  • You left of the "P" prefix

  • Modern technology ..stop banks? He puts both feet in one leg of his pants. He's at university??? what??? This is what inbreeding in the ACT party achieves.

  • "it's just water anyway" I live in Canterbury, FUCK YOU ASSHOLE I AM COMING TO AUCKLAND TO BLOCK YOUR STREAMS AND TAKE MY MILK BACK.

  • You Rick Giles are an idiot on 'three fun loving levels'.

  • You are a fucking joke.

I've got three fun-loving levels for you:

    Fuck

    Right

    Off

  • This is the most inane arguement I think I've ever seen. It's amazing.

  • This guy is the new Liz Shaw

  • Hoist by his own semi-literate, rambling, juvenile petard.

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

    ha!

  • Fractal guy,

Earth Hour's idea is to ration energy- to reduce, to consume LESS. To substitute away from it.

Embracing, celebrating, enjoying, revelling in consumption of technology and energy is the very opposite to this. And, that is called Edison Hour.

  • @NZB3 We do have many, many coal plants. Some of your other initial points are pretty valid - using candles instead of electricity is a bit stupid - but I also don't think you really understand symbolism.

I think you'll lose many of your viewers right at the point where you say you don't believe in global warming, numbnuts. At this point I think you're just an act branded troll, so it's not worth saying anything more.

  • You arguement still fails to make any sense. The idea behind earth power is not to shun technology, it is to conserve electricity.

Technology is wonderful and amazing but shouldnt we always strive to make it more efficient ? Do you turn off your monitor when your not using it Rick ? Or do you leave all the lights on in your house during the day and leave the TV permanantly on ? If so... why ?

    .

  • You sir, are a royal idiot. Your "logic" is BS. Short arrow from a long bow.

I voted for act once... if you even stand for them I'll never consider it ever again. ever.

    Go give Rodney a BJ.
