I just played it this Christmas holiday and I was flabbergasted I hadn't played it before then. The story was immersive and compelling, the physics engine was amazing (for its time) and Alyx is probably the least annoying NPC sidekick I've ever dealt with from a technical perspective (also a very well fleshed out and sympathetic character from a writer's perspective).

I think the Gman first worked for the Vortigaunts, they were slaved by the Combines, the Vortigaunts asked Gman for help, he found Gordon Freeman to kill Nihilant and break the bind... But then, at the end of Half-Life 2, The Combines made a more interesting offer to Gman, and took him (and Gordon) to their side, but the Vortigaunts showed up and rescued Gordon, so now Gordon is free, and the Gman is pissed off. The employers were the Vortigaunts, and now they're the Combines.
