No one can force a child to be believe in God, but it is the right thing to do to guide him in the right direction. I wish that my parents had done that for me. Finding God earlier would have helped me through all the hard times and away from the bad choices I made.
People get mad about this kind of issue, so I'm not going to answer any angry replies...
@eurasianchica The greater issue is having a support system. My friends have been much more reliable than any religious group I've encountered (and if you're wondering, not one of them is a practicing Christian).
@BoredomCorner I'm glad that you have such a great set of friends, but it isn't the religious group that gives you support, it's faith in God. Unlike any human, God won't leave or die. I think this is why people in rich countries have a harder time believing in God, because everything is so permanent for them. Their house is always safe, people won't die unexpectedly. But for the less fortunate, nothing is assured except for God. Just IMO, though.
Nobody should have to respect any beliefs that they don't agree with. It's the believers who are always crapping on others for not following their dogma.
"Children oughta go to Church when they're young 'cause when they're older they're havin' too much fun to be religious."
XD THAT! IS! HILARIOUS! Wow...I'm 20 years old, mind you, so I've discovered the show through the magic of YouTube--and the Nostalgia Critic--but that's just so hilarious and actually kind of true...
You can't prove God, and the fundamentalists and Jesus Camp crowd need to stop trying to, and youn't disprove God and the Dawkins-ites need to stop trying to.
One infuriates the other with its idiocy, and its a vicious circle that catches up the middle ground--which is the majority--and just causes a lot of unecessary strife in a word that has too much of it already.
If you want to believe in God, fine, and if you don't fine--just let your fellow man make the same choice, I say! :)
This is the first All in the Family episode that I watch, and I totally came across this stuff by accident...I'm only 19, and this is great! it really made me laugh! what the hec is up with modern tv sitcoms???
@DaBearsRockMySox This show was dealing with an ignorant bigoted moron like Archie intent on indoctrinating the Stivic's child with his beliefs. The episode did it in a humorous way, but Mike Stivic was clearly an atheist and had every right to try and raise his kid with an open mind and have Archie refrain from shoving 'his' beliefs down the throat of his newborn. This does not equate to crapping on other's beliefs, more like -keep your religion to yourself!
@SoccerBalbus Most certainly does not mean all. Also, Mike may be Polish, but he was raised in the U.S. There is nothing unrealistic about creating a Polish atheist character.
The one thing I don't get about some people is all the faults that are pointed out about Christians. Yes Christians do many bad things. Yes there are some religions that have had many scams involved with them. But you mean to tell me that atheists don't? Both Mike and Archie were stubborn in their beliefs. Edith was respectful of the Mike/Gloria's wishes. Just as some Chrsitians are in people's faces about their beliefs so are many atheists. Neither side is perfect.
@TheBibleIsLame funny someone would make a name the Bible is lame obviously God is real and the BIble is truth for someone to even make a name like that.

@MelodiesForever sorry not a good idea, That's the reason our country and world is the way it is. Parents don't raise their kids in the truth of Jesus Christ, Which is the only thing that can give them stability in life.

The worst thing with this series is, that Archie Bunker represents the average American idiot. Half the morons here doesn't even understand it's a comedy series, they think he's dead serious. If he'd run for president, he'd easily win. That's because most American presidents were Archie Bunkers.

Then fix your profile dip shit and don't give me that excuse your country limits what you can see. Also, where ON the world Norway is? It's ON the surface...up Scandinavian way. You are a fucking tool, you know this right?
Don't you understand what I'm saying than? You English speaking people should be glad that other people make an effort to make themselves understandable in your simplistic language, because we know you don't understand a word of anything else.
Oh my.... and with your IQ, that would have made it almost impossible to understand that sentence. I'm so sorry I didn't take your handicap into consideration again...

Plenty of stats on liberals and atheists and troubled children, as well as religious hypocrites and bigots and troubled children.
Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he WILL not depart from it. Jews keep a mezuzah on the doorpost as a reminder of our responsibility as to what G'd expects of us in Deuteronomy about teaching our children. Instruction AND example!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Bringing up a child in the word of God is one thing, however, what that child sees in there home and around them will truly determine how they will turn out. Family and home structure will determine the sucesses and failures as a child and will determine how they will behave in adulthood. Some of the most evil people I have ever met were supposedly raised up in strict religous homes.
Typical liberal parents of the era--"Don't want to 'influence' him, make his own decision" That is why so many liberal parents have kids in trouble, they give no guidance to them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Maybe they don't want to just tell a child who should be busy eating worms what his opinions are on all the major questions of life.
But hey, if atheists and/or liberals were raising troubled kids, that would sure be a bad sign. I'd sure like to see some stats on that. I guess what I'm trying to say is [citation needed].
Maybe you'll say "in my experience." Read a little about confirmation bias and get back to me. The easiest person to fool is yourself, and you are the best person to do it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Teaching a child about the "major questions of life" is a parent's JOB. Pure and simple. If you don't think it is right to influence children's ideas, don't have any.
When I say the major questions, I mean "where does the universe come from" and questions of that nature. IMHO it's not good for a kid to be just handed his parents' opinions on such questions.
Obviously parents need to teach kids about the world, but just handing them a religion is borderline indoctrination. That goes for Muslims as well as Christians. It's sad! Democracy is all about informed choices. If your religion wasn't a choice, it's like a spoiled ballot. It doesn't count.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And by the way, if you're concerned about teaching your kids morals, the best advice I can give is lead by example. I know lots of parents who do lots of beautiful talking about morality but show their petty, squalid little souls at every juncture of life. Guess how the kids usually turn out.
You ignorant bible beater...the majority of the children have seen grow up to be thieves and druggies, have been those who grew up going to church every sunday. Learn your facts
You know what I got news for you I am Christian and I am not robbing convience stores Belief in God doesn't cause people to become criminals it is the people that twist and warp the meaning of the religious teachings that mess people Also mindless materialism has turned us into selfish assholes We no longer care about each All we care about now are all the useless fancy gadgets and gizmos we have We all need to change our way We need to care about each and respect each others beliefs
what an absolutely retarded statement. Do you have ANY facts to back up this ridiculous claim? I think stats would show that the majority of kdis that grow up in trouble are more often than not products of single family homes, regardless of religion.
OMG I just realized how much Edith reminds me of my God-given-grandmother, same hair, height, dress wear and body. I asked her to make an 'Archie' call with the high pitch voice and she did it so good.
Archie: "Whose gonna see me crossing the alley; A couple of cats?" HAHA Wise ass Archie. These writers couldn't have picked a better actor for Archies' character. Carol O`Conner. One of the greatest!
Legit question BabyEeyore509. Don't know where all the hostilities came from. If you don't follow the show, you may not know if she was pregnant for real or not. It has nothing to do with thinking, as theshaggyskinhead put it. If you don't know you ask questions. But since many people are nutcases and type first and think second, I would suggest googling it first. That's what I do. Cheers.
yeah because shaggyskinhead a smartass guy decided to be stupid. no but on the fresh prince vivian was really pregnant. I don't know anything about back then thats why I was asking.
of religion than all the other reasons (money, power, control, land, etc) combined historically....
so lotta good preying to false god's has done for mankind
the only reason man invented false god's back in the day was FEAR of just about everything cause he understood nothing... such as WIND, FIRE, RAIN, stars, planets, death, lightning, thunder, and so on...
when are you gonna realize that the word athiest is not a DIRTY WORD all it really is . is COMMON FUCKIN SENSE...good day
That's very egotistical of you to be so sure that no God exists. You can't prove him and you can't disprove him. You aren't gonna change anyone's mind about God. And to say "it's been proven by today's greatest minds", is false. It has not been proven or disproven.
i dont have to prove nothing you do....read what i wrote.....the only thing science has not provin is the big bang theory or any theory that proves how it all started, so untill science can prove what started it all
the idiot (like yourself who believes in god) can still walk around and say god did it
which is not fair to put the bourdon on science like that, they have figured it all out at every turn except the origin. But trust me it aint no imaginary god that started things
Did I say I believe in God? I don't know what to believe. But to be so sure of yourself, that you definitely know there is no God, is egotistical.
You are the one who question whether God exists, you need to prove it to yourself that God doesn't exist. Obviously you have. Nobody has to prove to anybody else if God exists or not. And to say that anybody who believes in God is an idiot, shows how "smart" you really are.
People should really be able to choose any religion they choose. Or if they want to have religion at all. Real talk. People say lack of religion causes problems. Please. Common sense:Christianity's popularity has been an American staple from day one. And things have steadily gotten worse and worse. It's not the religion itself but the need by fundamentalists to shove it down people's throats.
im a lil mad moy mom got me baptizewd when i was little cause now im an atheist just unles jesus comes out of the clouds breakdancing, but whne i have kids im goin to let them decide when there older
"Going away, ya look like the back end of a zebra.." George Jefferson said that, also. George and Archie are more alike than either of them cares to realise.
If someone is never exposed to a thing, he can't decide about it. You might as well not expose him to good manners, so he can make up his own mind whether to have those or not. And no school, so he can decide at 18 if he wants to read & write. Keeping children ignorant about their humanity-mind, body & spirit-makes them unequipped to make INFORMED choices. It's neglectful parenting. The '60s generation was just plain stupid. The Meathead was the poster-boy for '60s generation stupidity.
good manners is universal. religion is something ppl choose or are born into because of their culture etc. I don't think I'd want my child forced into something they weren't comfortable with or become a sheep that follows whatever a specific religion'sss doctrine. ppl can be good and honest citizens without subscribing to a certain faith. as long as the family instills decent morals etc. from an early age
thats why religion exists..cause assholes expose kids to the bible when their heads are still soft...and thats wrong, if children were not exposed to the bible until they were 18 and then read it and formed their own educated opinion, organized religion would not exist........and the world would be a better place.....darwin is the way to go..not false god's

Watch "Fiddler On The Roof" sometime.

Bringing up a child in the word of God is one thing, however, what that child sees in there home and around them will truly determine how they will turn out. Family and home structure will determine the sucesses and failures as a child and will determine how they will behave in adulthood. Some of the most evil people I have ever met were supposedly raised up in strict religous homes.
italobambino43 2 years ago
Amen Srd Agreeds 100% the bible says train them up in the way they should go and thats in the word of God =)

Typical liberal parents of the era--"Don't want to 'influence' him, make his own decision" That is why so many liberal parents have kids in trouble, they give no guidance to them.
Srd1126 2 years ago
They didn't want to influence the baby in regards to religion. That doesn't mean that they are going to ignore or be permissive parents.
Mastamoose 2 years ago 2
Parents that give no guidance on religion tend to be lax in other areas as well.

Teaching a child about the "major questions of life" is a parent's JOB. Pure and simple. If you don't think it is right to influence children's ideas, don't have any.
Srd1126 2 years ago
When I say the major questions, I mean "where does the universe come from" and questions of that nature. IMHO it's not good for a kid to be just handed his parents' opinions on such questions.
Obviously parents need to teach kids about the world, but just handing them a religion is borderline indoctrination. That goes for Muslims as well as Christians. It's sad! Democracy is all about informed choices. If your religion wasn't a choice, it's like a spoiled ballot. It doesn't count.

And by the way, if you're concerned about teaching your kids morals, the best advice I can give is lead by example. I know lots of parents who do lots of beautiful talking about morality but show their petty, squalid little souls at every juncture of life. Guess how the kids usually turn out.
simplic10 2 years ago
You ignorant bible beater...the majority of the children have seen grow up to be thieves and druggies, have been those who grew up going to church every sunday. Learn your facts

what an absolutely retarded statement. Do you have ANY facts to back up this ridiculous claim? I think stats would show that the majority of kdis that grow up in trouble are more often than not products of single family homes, regardless of religion.

What is more likely?
a) She goes through all the trouble of being pregnant and having a child just to shoot some episodes for a TV show.
OR
b) She has a fucking fake pregnant stomach under her clothes.

Cheers.

of religion than all the other reasons (money, power, control, land, etc) combined historically....
so lotta good preying to false god's has done for mankind
the only reason man invented false god's back in the day was FEAR of just about everything cause he understood nothing... such as WIND, FIRE, RAIN, stars, planets, death, lightning, thunder, and so on...
when are you gonna realize that the word athiest is not a DIRTY WORD all it really is . is COMMON FUCKIN SENSE...good day

oh its fact.....and as proven by today's greatest minds (scientists, the law of physics etc)
its not up to the athiest to prove its fact that a god does not exist.
its up to the believer to prove that a god exists...the burdon is on YOU.
ever wonder why people across the world believe in some many diffferent gods, there are dozens and they KILL over it day in day out
its because MAN created god thats why there are so many...its NOT REAL-deal with it.
more people have died at the hands
