An idea for alternative lighting......White Cold Cathode Computer case lights.
They have low current draw and are 12 V. Each set is about 9 dollars shipped and has 2 tubes with output about 350 LUX.
I use 2 sets (4 twelve inch long bulbs) for lighting my computer room. 1 set is sufficient however when I want to read a book I turn the other set on. They claim to be 5 milliamp at 12 volt. although I have not verified it at this time.
Try "Woodgas" or alcohol in your backup generator. "victorygasworks" has a youtube channel and a website. good stuff and proven "Old technology" Peace
great stuff guys, can't wait for more. bout to get off the grid myself soon. me my wife and two kids. we've been lookin at teepees. not sure about a permanent location. what is your opinoin on choosing a location?
I am going to Alaska soon,, will be off grid,, choose to be near a good lake with lots of fish. Ill also be using a rain catchment system and gravity for watering my garden and will be purchasing an atmospheric water generator,, yep looking at one that will produce 20 liters of water per 24 hour with 30% humidity,, works sort of like an air conditioner condensing water from the air,, thats the best way to make sure its pure and kills all bacteria
Excellent vid. We hear politicians and people in the media constantly pay lip service about alternative energy and conservation and here you show someone who is actually living it, and walking the talk. Thanks for this 5*****!!!
US DOE: "A) Peak solar array alternating current (ac) efficiency (assumed) = 11.25% B) Surface (active) area per KW ac peak array output =96 square feet (...) Average US daily electricity consumption in 2000 in kWh =9,975,342,466 J) Total array surface area to equal daily US electricity consumption given the above assumptions = 6,429 square miles. If at least double that area is needed for spacing between rows of modules, etc., total surface area covered by a solar PV power plant would be 12,857
Everything the media tells you. Florescent (or better yet led) lighting, unplug anything with a remote. One key is to get the inverter to TURN OFF during the night cause it takes some wattage just to run itself. So if you have a wall wart plugged in for your monitor, unplug it.
And if your running pure solar, forget about toasters, heaters, electric ovens, blow dryers, anything that produces heat.
Awesome vid, you're dogs look maybe a bit too well fed though - I'm just joshing ya, they look really healthy. Do you feed them standard pet food or fresh kill from the bush or both?
If you don't do it before you "have to" then it'll be too late. I say that because of all the surprises i've encountered up here. Ex gardening. It takes a couple of years before you learn enough to sustain yourself.
Also; If the outside infrastructure were not there to help ie: home depot etc, it would have been much more difficult. That it not to say it would be impossible to survive, it would just be much more unconfortable.
ok so I have a question??? how much was the cost of your set-up of solar panels and inverter? I wanna know how much it is for a person thinking about living off the grid a is to set-up.
@celluloidcypher they're different prices depending on your set up. this was just the one greaserig set up and it has been a work in progress. Upgrades like the batteries and the inverters etc. A little research on the net and you can find all sorts of solar options.
dude, that view looks awesome.and weather you are 100% off the grid dont mean shit to me, it is all the sincere effort and desire you put into it.if i m ever back in the states or on the west coast, i would love to see it.but i dont think i m coming back while obama is prez
I got the solar components from "beyond oil solar" (on the web) They have the best prices i could find, and the guy there, Daniel, is very well informed and cooperative.
I got it piece by piece as needed to expand. It was easier for me that way as i learned what i really needed and for budget reasons. I bought only what i needed at the time and designed and assembled it myself.
How it was funded? It was self funded. If you would like to give us a grant i would not refuse!!
Try converting the gas generator to alcohol, and make yourself a still. If you have a carburated vehicle, That also can be converted to run on alcohol.
The problem i have with an alcohol still is that (from my understanding) it needs a constant source of heat over a long period of time. Something i do not have up here. A solar powered still would be great if it were feasible.
Keep warn up there this winter. I hope you have some, polytunnels for growing good vegetables, your extra KWs will work well for you all year round.. I will e mail a link today have look it maybe of good help to you all up there.
Holy crap, us city slickers are in for A big surprise. It looks like it takes some $ to get off the grid. Cant I just stay in my house, use the power, water and internet and just detach mentally from this said grid.

Hi Joeweed...yes you are right some places I think in B.C. are fairly warm all year around....but I have to confess I am illiterate when it comes to the country even though my relatives and ancestors are farmers from Sask.....I have much to learn if I ever have to head for the hills....I must say I have a lot of admiration for people that can live off the land....one thing great about Canada is that there is so much space and so few people....
Hey Change,I'm up here in Saskatchewan,Canada and it's -30 right now. Can I pay you guys to shave and send me the clippings? I need to insulate my house.
