I saw Big Jim doing a Fender guitars Demo at the White Swan Sheffield in 1977. He had a stage full of all the latest Strats Teles etc but did the whole demo on a semi acoustic Fender Starcaster, he announced to the audience that it was the only guitar out of the whole bunch that was playable. Fender got their act together soon after that.
Jim is a Legend!! He's probably played on more hits than any other guitarist in the world considering he was the abbey road session guitarist back when they had full time session players. James bond theme tune, beatles, bowie, to name but a few apparently!
Jim was a big influence on my guitar playing back in the day. I use to watch Tom Jones show just to catch a few seconds of Jims playing at that time. He always had a spot featuring big Jim.
Mmm not so sure it was Henry, as even though the head was missing from the shot, the hands were of a contemperareous older person at that time than Henry, and it has to be said the guitar work was not approaching Jims standard, so it probably was not him.
There must be some more clips somewhere Guys.............surely !!!
There was a Bay City Rollers program in the 70's (shang-a-lang)and Jim had a 90sec (approx) segment where he showed viewers how to play the guitar, the one I remember was him using a Talk box, I seem to remember he was James Lasts guitarist too
Yeah I've got an episode of Shang a Lang on Video. When Jim does his spot, he looks seriously pissed off and says "If the Children would stop screaming, I'll play this piece" He's playing a Natural Thinline Tele and Eric and Woody are playing rhythm behind him very badly. Not surprised he quit, he didn't need that shit!!
I know that he has not been well of late but I would echo the earlier comment - if you have the chance to see him 'live' GO SEE HIM!! The guy is brilliant!
Yes, me too! I always waited for that little spot where he'd come on and dazzle for 12 seconds...I'm still looking for some clips from the Jones Show.
Big Jim the Uk's best ever session guitar player, with over 1000 hit chart singles to his credit I think? Keep it up. Cheers for the posting, Got anything else?
More people should know about this bloke! This is a pitifully short piece by an astonishingly brilliant guitarist. I've seen him umpteen times, his playing is incredible, not that you'd know it from this. This is from his website, if anyone's got anything else with his playing, PLEASE put it on YouTube!
Yeah Big Jim!!!

I feel some clarification is in order.
Jim walked out of the Shang-A-Lang show !
I'm not sure that the Joe Cocker clip from "This is Tom Jones" featured BJS. It was almost certainly Henry McCullough.
It was removed for copyrighted reasons.
