The musical reference to Keith Jarrett's 'As Long as You Know You're Living Yours' is unmistakable but Donald Fagan and Walter Becker didn't have to worry about protecting their reputation as songwriters. The body of Steely Dan's work is some of the most creative in the history of rock/jazz music.
Keith Jarrett is also one of the most creative musical geniuses around. Too bad they had that conflict.
@barneez1 hehe i know what're saying but according to copyrights protections laws as far as i can remember it is 7 bars of a similar music that can be recognized as i plagiarism. And in case of this song we do have a long intro that totally resembles keith's "'long as you know you're living yours ". It is the same grove, same key and tempo, the sax line is very similar to keith's and even the sound and the timbre of the sax it a copycat of the the one from kieth's. (pls see 2nd part my reply blw
besides, Becker and Fagen did not pay Keith out but they were forced to add his name to the credits and to include him in the royalties.
I do know that keith could be a dickhead even at his own concerts but i dont personally care as he's still of the greats still leaving and i do idolize him
@MzEspionaj In defense of morthomme62, I agree this is definitely "West Coast" in its style and theme, in the same way "Aja" and "Glamour Profession" are and a song like "My Old School" is not.
the first two chords of this song are a vamp that is extremely common in music. cant believe keith jarrett sued them for this. his song is weak in comparison really. what a dickhead.fagen and becker probably just paid him cuz he was annoying
This song was stolen from Keith Jarrett's song "Long As You Know You're Living Yours". Jarrett sued for copyright infringement and eventually settled for a sum of approximately one million dollars, the deal stipulating that Becker and Fagen keep the songwriting credit. Fagen later told the press that maintaining their reputations as songwriters was an important factor in the decision to settle for such a substantial sum. "
I keep putting videos of this song in my Dan playlist, but they keep getting deleted. I hope this one stays up. I think it has more to do with Keith Jarrett, his label and his people than it does Steely Dan. You'd think that 30 years after the fact and the settlement and everything that Jarrett et al would lay off, but I guess not. Such a beautiful track.
Special Friend (you don't think to understand) I don't care what you do alll ...do you care to Explain? Steely 4ever, high in the Custer Dome...my God what lyrics!!! Do I understand these lyrics ...heck not!!! but they draw me to Steely 4ever.

One of my favorite Steely Dan songs. The sax melody is pure gold and the drums are genius!

"Steely Dan" is from New York, respectively...so that's East Coast!

@plimbuff Only the vamp (keyboard intro) arrangement and beat are the same. The song is Donald and Walter's
