They are a thin piece of foam, that could easily be cut through by a skate. It has nothing to do with "being too cool." It has everything to do with it is an extra piece of equipment that doesn't work, why would someone wear something that wouldn't work?

Football might be a rough sport but I'll never believe NFL players are tougher than hockey players. Malarchuk has his throat cut, nearly dies within minutes, & yet skates off the ice almost under his own power.
