The amount gained is determined by the value of the Endurance/Stamina stat. MP works the same way in that the character must use spells, but it'll be the Magic stat in control of just how much MP you gain.
random battles are evil when i want to go somewhere fast i encounter random battles then when i get there i dont want to play cause i get tired of random encounters
Yep. The DoS/FF20 versions were tweaked in many ways to make them easy enough for the tween crowd; I would think most would be bored if forced to grind as role-players of my generation are so used to doing. That, and hard play isn't exactly portable; your handheld, whatever it is, only goes for 6-12 hours on a charge, so long RPGs don't really fit well in that arena.
