bought this about 2 years ago.. maybe a month more or less.. and still i am playing any game i want...combined with a HD5770 and 4GB ddr3 ram.. medium settings or higher most of the time 1080p sometimes 720p with 2xAA. no oc-ing nothing, amazing =D
i am totally happy with a cpu for 100 euro's.. never expected to still be playing games at fine settings and fps.
dont wonna sound stupid but im going too lol, my pc has a ASUS m2n68-am se2 mother board, 4gb ram, 500gb harddrive, palit gts250 1gb, Amd athlon II x2 250 Processor 3.01 ghz, i did a benchmark test on gta 4 and discovered that while my gfx was only using 60% (not max settings on game but still) and my cpu was running at like 93 percent average, so i would like to upgrade just my cpu for the moment,i want the AMD Athlon x4 630,not sure if compatible with my motherbard, anyone know ?? thanks.
Guys, if you are looking around for the best cpu for you check out the my unboxing of the amd athlon II x3 450, its a brilliant processor! Thanks :D /watch?v=DsL9QHNY-yg
Totally surprising how much performance you get from these extremely cheap quad cores. I got an X4 640 and it's performing like a champ in every single thing I throw at it. If you're into gaming it's perfect as well, you can overclock it fairly well (up to 3.8-3.9). Gaming is also more about the GPU rather than the CPU.
Amazing performance for the price you pay. Brilliant CPU.
overclocked my chip is doing super pi 1 million digits in 23.3seconds, compared to my X2 5000+ black that did 27.8 seconds, compared to 5000+ non black at 35 seconds (crappier motherboard for that chip)
a phenom II X4 entry level super pi's around 24 seconds, if your waiting for the new AM3+ boards / chips but need a cheap quad core system to play black ops and other recent games but dont want to get a chip for 200 bucks that will be phased out very soon drop 100 bucks on an athlon II x4
i have the 640, its a bit lacking in FPS in intense games like arma2 (but its no doubt my video card slowing me down too)
its the poor mans phenom II, it lacks the extra L3 cache so it doesn't do as good in the games as its bigger brother but its not THAT far behind, for the $ spent i am very pleased with the performance for about 100 dollars!
should be able to get 3.3ghz stable on stock volts (1.38v on my 640) and 3.48ghz at 1.420-1.456... results will vary.
I laughed when he said its great for your parents who casual game and watch some movies. Last time I checked a single core could do that. This chip can run any game and works on older boards so you'll get more life out of your system. We all know their not the fastest but their price is great and you get to hang on to your motherboard and ram instead of a whole new system. Considering this you will certainly spend much less money in the long run.
@GamerAndReviewer Athlons aren't as good at overclocking as the phenoms, and if you caused it to crash by Oc'ing it, where's the logic in blaming AMD? And it's not likely your mobo if the crashes consistently happen when you reach 100% load.
@crazykirsch It broke down even when I had it at 2,8 GHz! There was no much difference than 2,6! :P
And yeah, the crashes happen when it reaches 100%! I tested it with a program! But even though I play games at 2,6GHz, sometimes it lags very much and that's not the video card's problem! Now instead of the Blue screens, it lags!
Mine broke down!!! FUCK AMD! I was a fan and now I hate it! :P
It works only at 2,6GHz! When I Overclock it, even though I have Cooler Master V6 GT which works fine,. when the CPU reaches 100%, Windows 7 show a Blue Screen and then the computer Restarts!
@makani18 It depends when you got the motherboard. If it's new, I think it will work without updating BIOS cause probably it's already updated. But if you have this for over a year, then it's good to update BIOS first! Watch PCWizKid's video on how to update BIOS! =)
I was planning on getting a new CPU and mobo I currently have a Q8300 @ 2.5Ghz, There's a 3Ghz Athlon ii quad for about £75, the intel version costs over £200, and my multiplier is locked at 7.5, so 14.5 is a huge difference with this CPU, and it's a lot cheaper!
There really is no debate after going over the different options.
I cannot see ANY argument for going for anything other than a quad core right now unless you only need your system for the next year or two at most before upgrading again.
I cannot see any argument for going for anything other than the following 3 options:
I think this review was made to satisfy AMD a little bit because my 640 @ 3.0GHz benchmarks almost identical to the Phenom II x4 940 @ 3.0GHz and I can OC it to 3.6GHz on the stock cooler and outbench the Phenom II x4 965 @ stock speeds in about 70% of comparisons. (The *lack* of L3 cache actually helps in a lot of real-world apps!)
And as someone who builds about an equal number of Intel and AMD systems (no bias - I use who's best) there's no arguing Intel's top end. SB i5/17

I'm a hardcore PC gamer and I need your advice. I have 6GB RAM (2gb usable) I have Windows 7 home premium. I have a AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 620 Processor 2.60 GHz. My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce GTS 250, but I get EXTREMELY low frame rate in a game like GTA 4. Is the problem my graphics card or my processor? Whatever the problem is, please tell me what I can buy to improve the frame rate!
@sonicdaguy 1) since 2 of your 6 GB is usable I you are probably only using a 32 bit operating system instead of a 64 bit one. 64 bit recognizes more than 3.4 GB. 2) Most likely your BIOS is still set to use your built in graphics on the board rather than your GPU. Ok WizKid... Heres my question; im building a system and it will mainly be for video editing / web design. I do alot of simultaneous heavy apps and want to know which is better and why. The Athlon II X4 or the Phenom II X4 the difference in price is roughly 50 so will it be worth the money, again and why... Thanks for the imput and your reviews are great btw...
So, u recomend this prossesor but does it work good with Dell Insipon 570:
-> AMD Athlon™ II X4 Processor 630 (2.8GHz, 2M, 4C)
-> 4GB DDR3 SDRAM a 1066MHz- 2 DIMMs
-> 750GB Serial ATA (7200RPM) c/DataBurst Cache™
-> ATI Radeon HD4200 Graphicos (onboard)
I'm not a pcgames freak but i like some pcgames, would this be a good choise? maby in the future I can buy an ATI offboard video card. But what do u think about this comp?
I'm building a new PC, with which I want to play manly games on (the newest ones, with very high detail and so on..). Now my problem is, that I can't decide between the AMD Athlon II X4 635 and the AMD Phenom II X4 955 ? I am only a student and only have a tight budget. So is it really worth getting the Phenom ? I read some comparisons between the two and the Phenom only ranked marginally higher (for my eyes). It would be great if you could help, thanks ;) Phil
@menuuzer I have the X4 620 and it runs all my games fine except for Crysis. I am not sure if it is the CPU (the stock speed or lack of L3 cache) or my in-game settings are too high (I run an ATI 5870).
Better save the cash and go for the 635 and use the xtra change for other things, its not worth investing on something that is a bit expensive as a student.
@Nanogrip I'm not sure but I think this CPU makes the 5870 run slower... I have this CPU with a 4850. And I don't think the 635 will run the 5870 good... If you can afford it, get a Phenom.
It won't affect much really, I don't get crazy amounts of FPS but if it is enough to surpass the refresh rates of my monitor then the CPU is enough for me. I haven't had any slow FPS outside of Crysis, this is when the lack of L3 cache for the Athlon X4 is felt, un-optimized coding will need a CPU with lots of cache.
But still, I agree with you on getting a Phenom if you can. For me, I wanted to use the leftover money for something else like heatsinks, fans, etc.
@Nanogrip If you could unlock the L3 Cache of the 620, it would be fine! My motherboard sucks balls (ASUS M4A785T-M) and I can't unlock it! I think many people have problems unlocking Cores or Cache with the 785 chipset...
I was hoping my board supported the feature but darn, it uses southbridge 600. And even more sad is that it has no BIOS update to support the new X6s. Grraaarrr. Mobo is Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5, which bogs my mind because it was relatively high end at the time. Anyway, it works just fine.... for now :)
Please help me, I got a huge problem. I got this cpu and the fan noise is Terrible. It's @ 2.6ghz stock and the sound is so loud i didnt even know a small fan like that could produce it. its unbelievable. its around 7000 RPM under full load. and normal around 5000 RPM. and the themps are incredeble high... 50 celcius! on my old athlon iix2 240 it was around 30! with 2000 RPM fan? did i do something wrong? please help me? and can i replace my fan with the fan from my old one?
hey man, i oc-ed my 620 to 3.1ghz also. my temp is around 52*C at max load. cant help that much coz i live in a tropical country (room temperature around 25-27). humid and all. but its quite ok right? my cpu cooler is coolermaster hyper tx3. will it be possible to oc even further?
im currently running this processor on my hp pavilion a4316f-b and it performs spectacularly i definatley recomend it for casual gaming/computer needs but for more seriousness in gaming or computer needs the phenom II x4 black 940 derfinatley delivers
i know this cpu is for casual gaming but if i want to record gameplay using fraps will i be able to get 50-60fps at least while recording??????? (disregarding the graphics card) anyone?
i have a question about the BIOSTAR TA790GXB3 AM3 AMD 790GX ATX AMD Motherboard w w w . n e w e g g . c o m / P r o d u c t / P r o d u c t . a s p x ? I t e m = N82E16813138163R if a ddr 2 800 pc2 6400 is compatible with this

@DimebagCFH4Life If you have a AM2 / AM2+ motherboard, all you need is a BIOS update first before you install the new CPU. Check your motherboards BIOS updates and see.
@PCWizKid i have a question about the BIOSTAR TA790GXB3 AM3 AMD 790GX ATX AMD Motherboard w w w . n e w e g g . c o m / P r o d u c t / P r o d u c t . a s p x ? I t e m = N82E16813138163R if a ddr 2 800 pc2 6400 is compatible with this
Im just building a new pc, and a bit confused, im a bit more than a casual gamer but not that hardcore one. Can't decide which one should i chose, x2 250, x3 425 or x4 620. I know games using vga more than cpu, but the only part i cannot pick for sure is the cpu. Any advice will be appriciated.
@n1hilus allweys pick more cores for the buck , future games will be using cores , and u spend 60% of your time in the desktop and a 4 core will do the trick for you and for all people, people still think that dual is the way to go but no as much cores as u get for your buck;;)
i am going back and forth from this and a phenom cpu..
i am trying to see if this will be sufficient for a crossfire configuration..i am thinking perhaps not,i may have to go for a phenom. Just curious if anyone has used one of these in a crossfire configuration, like two 5750s or two 5770 radeons.
I was plannin on getting this but idk now you said casual gaming...which I game a lot but particularly on like World of Warcraft starcraft and other rts's. My friend says non casual gaming would mean something like having a 35 inch screen and 2500 resolution that kinda jazz. My friend prolly doesn't know shit but do you think it would work for playing those kinds of games on ultra settings or should I go bigger if I can afford it?
@Marlfox70 your friend is right. When I mean causal gaming, I mean games from last year, running at lower resolutions and not on High maxed out detail. You can still play recent games dont get me wrong its fine for the average gaming use, your older games will play fine, its the video card that you need to do most of the processing anyways.
Oh I see, well since I heard it from you, that's more than great for me, thank you very much. And thank you for your super quick response, I actually had a hard time trying to figure this out and I was afraid I would spend money in the future because right now I'm broke, haha, I really appreciate it. You really just saved me time and MONEY!!! Hahaha... Thanks again!!!
PCWizKid, I know you said that this AMD II X4 620 is not for 3D cards; however, I have this same one and I do not want to have to buy a Phenom or better simply becuase I do not have enough money, so I want to know if this CPU could be used with a Geforce GTX 260 Superclocked? I have Win7 64 bit Home Premium OS, 8RAM and 1TB of memory... oh and a Corsair TX 750W... I certainly would appreciate your help!!!
@miguelonucr Noman its good for 3d gaming, no need to buy another CPU, I just recommend you overclock this CPU to at least 3Ghz+ if you can so it does not bottleneck your graphics card thats all. You have a really good system for gaming in 3d.
@karolis4ever it is depending on how do you want to use it for gaming i recommend the phenom ii x2 550 if not you can try athlon x4 but i dont really recommend it
i tried II x2 550 it is very good processor especially with oc to 3.8ghz
This is my new processor, with it and my new ATI Radeon HD 4670 several of my "heavy" games (GTA IV, Team Fortress 2, Crysis...) are a little smoother than how they were with my AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core 6000+ processor :O
Hey - you can upgrade the Athlon II x4 620 to have 6mb L3 cache! Only works for those with a deneb batch though, there is vids here on youtube for it aswell...
@PCWizKid will this work in my pc? I have a dell inspiron 531 desktop, I don't know what socket my mobo is, but its the stock dell. I currently have an amd athlon x2 5000+
With a HD 5770, would this be able to do some gaming? Like the newer Call of Duty's maxed out at at least 50 fps? Or crysis at high? At 1280x1024 resolution.
Why don't you look at gaming benchmarks on the internet? It's really not as bad for gaming as PCwizkid makes it seem. You will get a little bit of a framrate drop compared to a phenom II (only buy a few frames, however the margin is even less prevalent once the cpu is OCed) Personally, I don't think the 620/630 will really limit the 5770. Even with a 5850 or so you wouldn't see too much of a bottleneck.
Oh boy, the old days are so much better. I got this and showed it off to my friends... Now its like garbage...

-> AMD Athlon™ II X4 Processor 630 (2.8GHz, 2M, 4C)
-> 4GB DDR3 SDRAM a 1066MHz- 2 DIMMs
-> 750GB Serial ATA (7200RPM) c/DataBurst Cache™
-> ATI Radeon HD4200 Graphicos (onboard)
I'm not a pcgames freak but i like some pcgames, would this be a good choise? maby in the future I can buy an ATI offboard video card. But what do u think about this comp?

Hey,
I'm building a new PC, with which I want to play manly games on (the newest ones, with very high detail and so on..). It would be great if you could help, thanks ;) Phil
menuuzer 1 year ago
@menuuzer I have the X4 620 and it runs all my games fine except for Crysis. I am not sure if it is the CPU (the stock speed or lack of L3 cache) or my in-game settings are too high (I run an ATI 5870).
Better save the cash and go for the 635 and use the xtra change for other things, its not worth investing on something that is a bit expensive as a student.
Nanogrip 1 year ago
@Nanogrip Okay, thank you very much :)
menuuzer 1 year ago
@Nanogrip I'm not sure but I think this CPU makes the 5870 run slower... I have this CPU with a 4850. And I don't think the 635 will run the 5870 good... If you can afford it, get a Phenom.
WolvesDominationGR 1 year ago
@WolvesDominationGR
Nanogrip 1 year ago
@Nanogrip If you could unlock the L3 Cache of the 620, it would be fine! My motherboard sucks balls (ASUS M4A785T-M) and I can't unlock it! I think many people have problems unlocking Cores or Cache with the 785 chipset...
WolvesDominationGR 1 year ago
@WolvesDominationGR
Anyway, it works just fine.... for now :)

Im just building a new pc, and a bit confused, im a bit more than a casual gamer but not that hardcore one. Can't decide which one should i chose, x2 250, x3 425 or x4 620. I know games using vga more than cpu, but the only part i cannot pick for sure is the cpu. Any advice will be appriciated.
n1hilus 1 year ago
@n1hilus well to add the your confusion, I'm review 2 more CPU's form AMD that are new. Stay tuned.
PCWizKid 1 year ago
@n1hilus allweys pick more cores for the buck , future games will be using cores , and u spend 60% of your time in the desktop and a 4 core will do the trick for you and for all people, people still think that dual is the way to go but no as much cores as u get for your buck;;)

Marlfox70 1 year ago
@Marlfox70 your friend is right. When I mean causal gaming, I mean games from last year, running at lower resolutions and not on High maxed out detail. You can still play recent games dont get me wrong its fine for the average gaming use, your older games will play fine, its the video card that you need to do most of the processing anyways.

You have a really good system for gaming in 3d.

tokebokarlsson 1 year ago
Why don't you look at gaming benchmarks on the internet? It's really not as bad for gaming as PCwizkid makes it seem. You will get a little bit of a framrate drop compared to a phenom II (only buy a few frames, however the margin is even less prevalent once the cpu is OCed) Personally, I don't think the 620/630 will really limit the 5770. Even with a 5850 or so you wouldn't see too much of a bottleneck.
Wiifan4life 1 year ago
@Wiifan4life Okay, thanks. Will now really start looking into it as it is so cheap.
