The first time I heard this song was at the age of 13 accidently trying to change from tape to radio on a boom box. It was my sister's tape who loved Elton John ever since she saw him in Concert. The song takes me back to those days when Elton ruled the air waves and living in Brooklyn where music and hanging out was all we had. I'm 50 now and still listen to the old Elton John tunes that made that era a great time to have experienced it.
@LeonardoLestat8w9 'Tis a mystery to me too! Had the opportunity to see him live for all 3 Southern California concerts. Fabulous! Elton...as long as you now have a home here wouldn't you like to add another Hollywood concert??????????????????????????
Wow -- I'm impressed at how well he does this one after all these years. I love the way Bernie's lyrics don't fit neatly into standard rhythms -- especially the "do you know what it feels like to have a graveyard/as a friend" bit.
I'm a vet and initially I was angered about those who only wrote songs about life as a vet, however I've had an epiphany: Elton John (Old Soldiers), Neil Young (Soldier), and the like are artists and their function in life is to create art for the rest of us to freely interpret any way we choose to: both these guys are dead on........kudos to them for putting their words to music and to me for gaining a new understanding of the true artist.
@scribe3s i've been wondering if this or "Goodnight Saigon" , songs about....your experience.....I doubt it's right or true or correct.... to give up your life for my USA!!!!!!!! So to you, and all your friends, I love to live in a country where we've got freedom of speech, lets repeal DADT please....

I listen to this song a lot when I feel lonely. Wonderful song and wonderful performance. Too bad most people don't listen to this great music.
