  • Great, now the only thing I can think about now is dinosaurs with spaceships. Thanks Neil.

  • @masluxx

I'm not positive, but isn't space a vacuum? What force would push the asteroid if there's no air?

  • just use nukes at a distance from it to pulse ti out of its harmful trajectory.

  • @masluxx u must have all the answers

  • @lilchrondog and you no imagination?

  • I wanna surf that wave, Duuuuuude!

  • God I really wasn't looking forward to the end, but now it just sounds awesome.

  • "water doesn't like to have holes in it" lolol

  • NOVA!! XD

  • I must say, those people who say "we will blow the $%# out if it" on youtube really need to watch this video.

  • @thatamazinggeek I'm going to have to refer to my friend to be sure, but I think that may be racist. Imma google and see if it is.

  • The only time it is ok to mention this guy in one sentence with someone like Bill O'Reilly for example is, when you say that it is a good think that your country doesn't just produce assholes and lunatics, but also great personalities on the exact other end of the spectrum. Neil deGrasse Tyson is the proof for it.

  • Thursday the 13th! Coming to a theater near you.

  • "That ablates te whole coastline, wiping it clean of all traces of civilisation...So have a nice day" BEST LINE EVER!

  • @bunaanub You "is" a moron. Tyson is a very well respected scientist, and I'd believe him over an ignorant ass like you any day. Peace

  • OHHH !! :D fantastic!!!

  • I vote Tyson for President of the world

  • @pandapalace11 Only our president? If there ever comes a time that we meet intelligent alien life, I want Tyson to be our ambassador for humanity.

  • Lmao I love thing guy, he’s so eloquent, outgoing, and funny.

  • This guy should be contracted to give speeches in other countries, with translators. People need to hear what he has to say.

  • @moonlightavenger Brilliant idea! But I don't think many people will come in to see. Instead let's translate all NovaScienceNow series. BTW did you see one called,Can we live forever? It'll blow your mind!

  • ROFL so have a nice day :)

  • Well, of course it's going to kill us all, its name is Apophis!

  • next black president

  • Deflection is a practical idea but what if we calculate the direct place where it will hit and the place would be the mecca? We could say to moslems that another magical stone has been sent from Allah to you, so all of you should gather to the holy mecca in april 13th 2036.

  • @nadoeloiskat Ha. Ha. Funny.

  • @nadoeloiskat That's just nasty. It's funny in a way, yes, but I wouldn't wish anyone to die.

  • @viridismonasteriense The real muslim do not die. He will go to paradise where 72 virgins is waiting him =))))

  • @nadoeloiskat Yeah, but who said they were female?

  • @viridismonasteriense just shows how smart he is.

  • @nadoeloiskat Hahahahaha, a great solution!

  • Oh wow . I felt like I was watching a movie hopefully, we keep that one on screen.

  • If he says we're fucked, we're fucked!

  • I still say "nuke it!"

Small pieces aren't a real threat. Because they burn up in the atmosphere.

  • @charlesvan13

yea they burn more easily but not always enough for it to evaporate, and the debree from the asteroid would then be radioactive, also hitting multiple locations...

  • @charlesvan13 Asteroids aren't Comets or meteors. They aren't made of ice. They're made of rock and metal. They will burn very little. I think deflecting is the best option. Or maybe we can just catch it, haha.

  • @charlesvan13 no ofense dude, but if i got to choose between the opinion of NASA scientist experts and yours... i keep with the idea of deflection

  • 6:22 win

  • we didn't name it bambi lol xD

  • lol youtube commenters thinking they know more than professional astrophysicists.

  • I can bet that in few years there will be conspiracy movies about Apophis. That it will hit Earth, and NASA is not telling the truth because we can't handle it.... Just like Planet X, Niburu, 2012 BS.

  • @sebastiansz Hey Dude NASA would tell us All of the 2012 crap is bull. But i do think apophis will either hit earth or come very close and Neil Degrasse Tyson isnt part of NASA and he said 2012 is fake!

  • @KidWrestlingRampage Yes they will tell us that 2012 is BS because it is BS. I didn't say that Neil is part of NASA.

  • @sebastiansz Ya Neil is quite more pasionate about science though NASA is great so is neil.

  • OMG! OMG!! does anybody have bruce willis and ben afflecks phone number??

  • lol pulling the moon in the way is impossible with what we have... the best way right now is to "park" a large rocket next to it and slowly "pull" it into the orbit that we want

  • im 14 years young and i think oboviously it wont make life on earth extinct erm hello DEEP sea likesomesharks are onlyseendieing as they swim up to surfacetodietheyrefore theasteriod could not kill them down in the pitch black sea and anyway our sceince and technology is to advanced i actualy think if we can make a device or pull the moon in theway it wouldwork because we have so much technology, not religious but its always good to know some1 big and powerfull is theyre to help u like god aymen

  • well your first sentence kinda speaks for itself huh? People learn to take a lot of other things into consideration when they age.

first of all, sharks don't go that deep into the ocean, second of all, even if you're in deep ocean you would still be dead, by the following reasons:

(1)the kinetic energy brought by the rock can cause a pressure change in the ocean, and could kill you easily(2)if you're lucky and not around .kinetic energy could also cause a tempature change in the ocean, you die.

  • (3)let's say you're very very far away from the collision takes place, the kinetic energy that's brought by the rock can still bring up dust in the atmosphere(or cause volcanic activity); or hitting a layer of rocks with special chemical compositions that would react under those situations(high pressure&heat) and producing a large amount of CO2 to cause a green house affect that would change the climate, and believe me when i say it's not like changing to rainy days,

  • it would be more like: case(1)ashes:"volcanic ashs, dust would cloud the atmosphere for years, lowering the amount of sunlike that come through the atmosphere, most of the plants and plankton in oceans won't surive, therefore the food chain unstablizes causing other species such as us to die( starving to death). even if you don't starve to death, the climate change could bring us to the next ice age...just do the math yourself.

case(2): green house affect: let's say that very luckily it doesn't

  • cause case 1, instead it causes case 2, the green house affect would cause a climate change as well, therefore changing the climate as well, the same scenario still stands for case 2, collapsing the food chain, ect,ect....

when you turn 18 and you still can't think this way... just give up.... life is a lot harder...

  • and im not saying that everytime some rock hits earth it would cause that to happen, it depends on how big the rock is and also how fast it is traveling, where it hits....etc etc....

first of all, trying to pull the moon is not only super super super(100times) costly(in other words impossible)

and pulling the moon in the way would only cause more problems... the same thing.. you gotta take more factors into consideration.. what would happen after it hit's the moon?

our lunar system and us are in

  • our moon and us are in a gravitational balance, if the moon shifted it would change us and the system, what would happen next? without the moon there would be not much tidal, therefore changing the state of our ocean again, and the next thing....

  • you have to use your own logic and computers to calculate what would most likely to happen next, and find a say to expierment it.that is what scientists do, instead of reading a book called the bible that was written by people who still thought the world was flat.

  • 6:22

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson is an amazing speaker.

  • I'm going to be the astronaut who threads the asteroid INTO the keyhole.

  • @rnvogel05 So, are you saying youre evil like Lex Luthor, or just clumsy like Mr Bean? :)

  • Very entertaining... I saw this movie.. its called "Armageddon" and Bruce Willis saved the day!

  • Well, he's not talking about the end of the world, right? Or is this asteroid gonna make all life on earth extinct?! I didn't hear him say anything like that, so what's up with the title of this video?

  • Okay, Here's My Answer (keep in mind, im in middle school)

    BLOW THAT SHIT UP!

  • good try, but...since you're in middle school and I'm a science teacher, I'll tell you the real answer. Astrophysicists have determined that "blowing up" an asteroid will not work for many reasons. The solution is to "push" it off course before it enters our atmosphere, and they are working on various ways to do that-if they ever need to. Pretty cool, right?

  • @cylencce: Thanks man, i was just kidding really. and, yeah it is pretty cool! It still creeps me out though. haha!

  • So have a nice day! LOL!

  • LOL... love this stuff!

  • He is such a brilliant speaker, informer and educator. I could listen to him speak on any subject! Dr. Tyson is an asset to humanity and his country.

  • I don't want to be the laughing stalk of the galaxy. LOL When who finds out? hmmm.... obviously he believes in extra terrestrials.

  • @jfeltes He could be talking about intelligent life that might form on earth after we are extinct. Kinda like us and the Dinosaurs.

  • Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson Is The Fucking Man! I Love Watching His Video's And Enjoy Listening Everytime He Talks!

  • What is the deal with this Planet X?

  • The old planet X was a mistake.

The new planet X is a total hoax and lie.

  • you should be saying it is 1 out of 45,000. which is considerably high odds considering this can take out the whole west coast. Its better chances than winning the california lottery at 1 out of 13,000,000 and people win that every couple months. Calculating odds just make you feel better.

  • crazycrafte 1 out of 45,000 is not that good of odds. The reason people win the lotto often is because there are more people playing. I don't know how many people play the lotto but let's say it's 500,000. If your number is correctly of 13,000,000 then that is 500,000 out of 13,000,000 that someone will win. This will reduce to a 1 in 26 chance that someone will win the lotto.

Basically your not calculating probabilities correctly.

  • roidroid, your correct, but your overlooking on small detail. In August 5th of 2006 is when it was observed that the asteroid would likely miss earth. This then has to be checked and scrutinized before acceptance. The "1 out of 45,000" chance was calculated in 2008.

This video was uploaded to FORA . tv on 2/9/2007. The lecture is probably from before that date in time. So, considering the time period, his statements are true, honest, and entertaining.

  • ah fair enough

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson is the man AGREED!

  • Neal deGrasse Tyson is the man!!!
