  • i stick by my comment this is crap.

  • it was the right move to bring on board stevens, dude voicals match right up with the whole savatge genre(zhahn/zanra) to keep moving forward. jon's voice has been slowly slipping away, old voice's do get tired. great fuckin band,, miss them. now in a part of "TSO".

    at least i have a few great live uploads to enjoy :-7****** \\\ M /// (<.....

  • This singer is pretty damn good except i hate how he sings up high and switches to his normal singing voice in the same part. i dont know if you guys who what i'm talking about but it's aggervating.

  • No one makes music like this any longer! This is sick and it's live, even though Jon is not singing this dude still gets it on. Skolnick rips as usual. RIP Chris...

  • best video on youtube...period

  • Man you knailed it, I saw him with savatage 3 x i'n Chicago simply awesome. This recording sux as far as the band, WTF !!! It's like there all drunk except zak, even the sound guy everthing fading i'n and out except his vocals, live music, ha..

  • SCREW ALL THE HATERS...THIS IS REALLY GOOD...DUNNO WHY JON ISN'T SINGING BUT THIS GUY IS DEAD ON...

  • Fuck yeah....suck it all u camparison crybabies!"

  • Fuckin shreds!

  • This douchebag is a piss-poor replacement for Jon Olivia.

  • dam this is crap, aweful crap.

  • @lpcsteve you are crapppppp!!!!...you twit,if dont like savatage you're a loser/,,/

  • Pretty heavy shit especially on the eve of the horrible, hurricane from hell good luck to all!!!

  • listening to it with a singer other than Jon is like listening to a cover band.

  • @PoulChuck you do realize jon handpicked him as his replacement right?

  • Hey everyone, if you are interested pay a visit to my instrumental originals /watch?v=Y--ml9VBtPQ and visit my website for more original music aymankhalifa(.)com , waiting for feedback and comments of real rockers like you guys ;)

  • I hate to say this , but this sounds like a cover band. I miss 80's Savatage.

  • @runnerinthewoods out of y'r mind? or rather - out of y'r ears.

  • didn't even know that Jon do play the guitar...he rocks!!

  • 2:39 balistic!!!

  • @runnerinthewoods

You mean the same Phil A who followed Exhorder around and completely ripped them off? Nah, Zak Stevens sounds nothing like them.

  • @IronFury ?

  • @NWOBHM1777

Phil Anselmo of Pantera followed Exhorder around during 1990, then the next year Pantera released Cowboys from Hell and completely ripped off their style. Look them up.

  • @IronFury oh i guess just the "look" kinda huh, the guitar reminds me of a cross between old Testalment and Exodus

  • @IronFury man you are a complete retard if you you think pantera ripped off exhorder . exhorder is badass but pantera = god. goddamn dude zak stevens is a monster!!!! and phil anselmo is a badass mother fucker

  • @333KLAUSE

Listen to Pantera before Cowboys from Hell, then listen to Exhorder's Slaughter in the Vatican. It's blatant ripping off.

It's a known fact that Phil was hanging out with Exhorder before they made Cowboys from Hell. I mean, if you're gonna rip someone off, Exhorder's a good band to do it from, but to say that they didn't rip them off, you're just lying to yourself.

  • @IronFury There's a difference between ripping someone off and being inspired by them.

  • @Slipknotrocksitsic

You're right, there is, but holy shit, they sound too close alike for it to be simply "inspiration."

  • @IronFury Personally i see more resemblance between Exhorder and Slayer than between Exhorder and Pantera.. That being said, i only listened to a handful of Exhorder songs, as i've never really been into them, so my voice doesn't count for as much as yours.

  • bye all the good guitars when the 2 Koreas go to war. Jackson, BC rich, Charvel, Samick.

  • @ZZombyWooff the only real good Jacksons, B.C. Riches and Charvels are the ones made in the U.S. so it really doesnt matter

  • @killtheposers1 it matters to poor people like myself.

  • it's not the same with out Jon singing and Criss playing guitar. Skolnick es good , but not good enough V_V

  • this aint savatage. no jon or chris oliva.nice effort though.sorry, i think i just saw jon oliva.you cant miss him.god damn, chris oliva was one of the best.

  • Thumbs up if you to thinks only Jon Oliva's voice can fit his own songs!!!!thanks Zak ,but jon is tha Real King!

  • Amazing....

  • @Rattmaster86 = fake and gay! (just trollin =)

  • people that talk shit usually suck at playing and are failed musicians, so they take out their frustrations online.doubt this bushwacksit guy could play his way out of a wet paper bag lol..you only see people ripping on bands on metal sites, its a bummer cause I love all metal and have been active in the scene since 94.---- support metal!!!!!

  • @sworn2theblack I think you have nailed the problem here. There are several musical genres that I don't care for, but the musicians that play the music are very good. I give credit where credit is due. I've been playing for years, and i've seen a lot of fakes, and wanna bees. Bands like Savatage are the real deal.

  • S E N S A C I O N A L ! ! !

  • Now that's METAL! awesome shit!

  • I have the whole concert on DVD!!!

  • Metal needs a return for sure. This is awesome!

  • @railroaded32 who said it was gone?

  • Savatage is now tso

  • Ripping off a classical title does little to hide their complete lack of creativity.

    More Godzilla crap.

  • @bushwhacksit You need to have your ears cleaned out you moron. Savatage is one of the most creative metal bands in history. Stop insulting the legend Jon Oliva.

  • @fivestring65 :

History is far longer than the time since "Heavy Metal" purloined its name from the bands of the 70's (Remember the animated movie of that name?). Same with the expression "Headbangers", which took its name from fans of the hardcore punk bands in Britain of that same period. Admittedly, this performance does do well importing the stylings of people like Van Halen (who always struck me as all flash and NO substance), as well as the incessant Godzilla rantings of Blue Cheer...

  • @bushwhacksit Wow, so you think Van Halen is all flash, and no substance huh? Damn, just go ahead and write off metal all together, and find some original music somewhere, and listen to it. I like a wide variety of music, not just metal. I give credit to anyone who can play like these musicians. Like it or not, they kick ass.

  • @bushwhacksit van halen flash you must not listen to alot of van halen...ill tell you who is flash poison there all about the look not music that is flash my friend

  • ...To me, creativity means doing something ORIGINAL, blazing new trails, moving into new territory, not to mention saying something within your art which teaches a lesson worth learning.

Perhaps when you get as many years under your belt as I have had playing guitar, you'll learn that there is more to be expressed within the emotional spectrum than anger and indignation.

I'm always open to intelligent dialogue...but don't be a moron yourself.

  • @bushwhacksit If you want to try to play the experience card on me, then go ahead. I have been playing for 30 years myself pal. As far as your comment on being original, savatage combined classical, and metal music to create a sound that hasn't been equaled yet. If that's not original, then what is. This band has such a definitive sound, that you know it's them when you hear any of their songs start playing. To me, that is the trademark of being original.

  • @bushwhacksit I respect your opinion, but have you looked at the entire Savatage catalogue? They do much more than anger and indignation. There are (and were) some very talented musicians behind Savatage, so don't write them off yet.

  • This song is awesome man real oldschool kickass metal. Let's bow to Savatage and the real heavy metal!!!!!!

  • R : u R the greatest guitar artist ever Criss

    I : I love U as long as i love music

P : Please God,, honor him in heaven,, and in our hearts,,because music production industry bitches didnt,,

  • Der Sänger hat ein nettes Shirt an :)

  • its amazing how one song can achieve such a level of fame

  • that's Al Pitrelli??

  • @metalboy031290 it's Alex Skolnick. Pitrelli came when Skolnick lelf in '95, after this tour.

  • @DTzerb that might explain the awesomeness of the song xD

  • I admit i don't know alot about Savatage, but I've loved this song for the last year, and this live version sounds as good as any version, this guys voice is pretty impressive.

  • Savatage rules !!!!

    This is real metal !!!

  • I love Savatage. Bumped into them with Gutter Ballet and a big fan ever since. MAAAADNESSSS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIGNS... in the hall of the mountain king!!!

  • thats sick...didnt know skolnick was in this band for a bit

  • @fivestring65

I originally got this video from a torrent of the Live in Japan '94 concert. I ended up cutting this myself to upload it.

  • @IronFury

    link please :)

  • ZAK IS GOOD TOO.. GREAT PERFORMANCE!!

  • @fivestring65

This is actually available on DVD now... it's only PAL though. Bonus in the latest Best Of package out. Still the Orchestra Plays

  • @fivestring65 You can get it on DVD from a special edition of their Greatest Hits which was released lately! Best concert ever IMHO!

  • Nobody can touch Savatage. Best Prog rock band ever.

  • Me like, mmwhoaaahahaha, Seriously, this is amazing, just like TheRimeOfcarus said, it is just like the cd.

  • awesome tune the band rocks !!

  • is it true they are reuniting?

  • For Yenlee69:

    Zak Stevens - Vocals

Jon Oliva - Back Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar

    Alex Skolnick - Guitar

    Johnny Lee Middleton - Bass

    Jeff Plate - Drums

I could swear I've seen Chris Caffery here, but it was Johnny Lee Midleton. They were like twins back in those days.

  • @MrsAcecard I'm glad that Skolnick was the one playing hes an awesome guitarist and has one of the best chances to live up to criss's awesomeness

  • @metallicatilldeathhh

Yes, Skolnick is toooo good to handle, look what he's doing in Testament nowadays.

  • DAMN.....this is soooo FUCKING GOOD!!!

  • @Yenlee69 It dosen't get any better than this!!!!!!!

  • @Yenlee69 It dosen't get any better than this!!!!!!!

  • Great singer!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds just like he was in a studio he can scream and make it sound soooo good!!

  • would you please tell me the name of whole band here. I kinda got lost

  • 1 year after criss death, jon and the others made such an awesome concert...hell awesome!!!well done!!!!!\w/!!

  • This sounds EXACTLY like the studio version. If it's actually live...

    Holy shit haha!

  • its obviously live, or at least re-recorded with the current line-up that featured jon oliva on guitar vocals and criss oliva on guitar guitar leads

  • 1000000/5

  • it really sucks my uncle actually knew the guitarist from savatage. (Criss Olivia) He used to hand wit him once in awhile before they got big. He met him when he was kid back in high school. But Criss died before they got big. That sucks. But I love Savatage.

  • OMG!!!!! THIS IS GODLY!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Metal ... I Love Hard Rock, and Prog Rock.........I love it all, it is just honest to good music.

  • Criss was not only a great guitarist, but he was also a great person! I met him in Ohio a couple of months before he died in 93! He took time to autograph my jacket, and talk to my friends and i for at least an half hour after the show before he had to leave!!!!

  • Sorry man, but without Criss Oliva it isn't Savatage anymore....When Criss died so did Savatage. Just my opinion though.

  • @TheKickassdrummer Well to a point. But as long a s Jon is still with us, the spirit is still there.

  • first saw savatage with DIO and megadeth in 87 at the omni these dudes still rock

  • Bom up valeu,não canso de ver o alex tocar, valeu.

  • is tht chris caffery on bass

  • No, that's Johnny Lee Middleton. I can see how he could be mistaken for Chris at first glance, though.

  • Definition of fuckin METAL!

  • yah, not the current storm of rip off metalcore and melodic weak euro power metal rip offs of actually good euro power metal bands.

  • fuck yeah baby I've seen this over and over and still feel compelled to comment...just kick ass metal all around....

  • Is that Jon Oliva on rhythm guitar?

  • Yes, it is. ;)

  • Something you all might not know there has been no Savatage tours because Jon owns the shit and Zak tried to sue Jon over the rights and lost so Jon put in to rest for awhile, Mark my words Savatage will tour again Jon just had to put Zak`s ass in it`s place is all.

Watch for the greatest hits coming soon probably next summer.

  • Oh God I hope so !

These guys kicked some major ass and I'd like to see them do it again !

  • !!! SAVA FOREVER !!!

    THX ALEX GREAT JOB

  • I dont see them making much better albums with criss., IMO. They made A LOT of great albums. Front-to-backers. Maybe it was just meant to be.

  • @kofferotten Go FUCK yourself Dickwad

  • @kofferotten Go FUCK yourself Dickwad

  • Wrong chords at 2:40. It's supposed to be C minor, Ab major, Bb major. Why did they change this? The studio version sounds better right here.

  • Actually, C minor--Ab major--Bb major is exactly what they're playing there. Granted, there are several changes to this version, but that's not one of them. If you're speaking of the chords not "looking" right on the fretboard, they could be tuned differently, but from what I can make out, it looks like standard tuning to me. Pitch-wise, though, those chords are the same as the original. Obviously, the vibrato, timing, etc., is different, but not the pitch.

  • Wrong.

I'm in front of a piano right now. This live version is playing C minor, G minor, Ab major (actually C5, G5, Ab5). Not the same as the studio version. Have your hearing checked.

  • Because comparing a (presumably) perfectly tuned piano, to a youtube (crap quality) video that's of a live show now 15 years old, is going to be incredibly accurate, right?

    Have your common sense checked.

  • You are an idiot. Watch the headbangers ball MTV video on youtube. The chords are at 2:12 on that video. If you can't tell the difference, go back to 4th grade music class.

    Now go away.

  • It's not standard...it's drop C

  • they probably did it cause of Zak's vocal tone....

  • For sure. Jon definitely hits a higher falsetto on the studio version before the solo than Zak does. Zak still did a pretty good job of this though.

  • I dont care, I listen to the origional a few times a week and I dont think so go olivers.

  • the guy with the black ibanez is Alex Skolnick from Testament?

  • Yep. Skolnick was in the band during the Handful of Rain album and tour.

  • @adrianrhoads7 What the...??!! No doubt.... !!

  • @adrianrhoads7 no shit, Thats scolnick??? fuckin awesome, that makes this video that much cooler

  • What the happened to the lead solo at the begining? Wheres the bad ass lead fills?

This ones kinda weak in my opinion.

  • You know Edvard Grieg is turning over in his grave now...

  • Turning in it or banging his head in it... perhaps we'll never know.

  • I know this song belongs to Jon Oliva, and he sings it beyond comparison, but DAMN....I'd say Zak is singing this better than anyone who is not Jon Oliva has a right to! Some of those raspy high notes almost sound like they could be from Jon himself!

  • Its all about Criss and Jon Oliva bitches!!!!

  • This song is legend.. pure metal !!

  • Zak is great, but Jon is better! And Song Rocks!! 5/5

  • Rob is great, but Cliff was better! And Metallica Rocks :P. 6/5!!

  • Why did They Down Tumbs you...

    Cliff was the Best..

    Love This song, 10/5

  • da war ich grad ma ein gutes jahr alt :)

  • This performance is perfection! 100% talent on stage right there! : )

This whole "Alex or Criss" thing is understandable but a bit pointless, imho. What you've got is two extraordinary guitarists who should be appreciated for their own contributions. (Think about it- I am proud to have BOTH Alex and Criss on my own favorite guitarists list. Why ditch one for the sake of the other?)

  • These guys use to live near my home in Tarpon Springs ,Florida The day Criss die was a big lost and a very sad day to us and his brother Jon. Criss you will all ways be miss for ever and ever.

  • You said it, dude. Criss was amazing in every sense of the word, but Alex is as well. Their styles are different, but they are both uniquely talented in the extreme. Alex may not have had quite the impact playing Criss's solos in Savatage, but I'm pretty sure Testament wouldn't have sounded the same with Criss either. It's not like it's a contest though - Criss and Alex are both in my personal top 5 guitarists in any genre. End of story. And Jon Oliva/Zak Stevens make any band awesome.

  • i love how zak makes it so that he sounds alot like jon on this song, thats badass!!! both are amazing singers!!!

  • this song rock !!!!!!! yeah

  • Ilike how Zak replicated Jon's accent on this tune.

  • he did really good.

  • mmmm... fuzzy

  • If anyone wants to see the song played by both oliva brothers then go and search savatage-hall of the mountain king rare. There are not many videos i am sure you find at leat two of them

  • god I love Savatage. there could have been no better replacement for Criss than Alex Skolnick IMO.

  • Except Chris Caffery.

  • except Chris Caffery was already in Savatage. and while Chris is a great guitarist, he can't touch Skolnick.

  • Actually he wasn't. He didn't join until Dead WInter Dead, and this was obviously filmed during the HOR tour. And as for that last bit, this is part of a argument that I have had throught many Savatage videos. I think that Skolnick is a better rhythm guitarist, but Chris is a better lead, guitarist, as exemplified by this video, in the solos, Alex fails, where as in the Tillunberg concert of 2002, Chris nails temptation revelation. But this argument will continue for a long time , I'm sure.

  • who didn't join until Dead Winter Dead? Alex?

  • Chris.

  • my bad, REjoined.

  • haha yeah you had me a little confused. he left after Gutter Ballet then came back on Dead Winter with Al Pitrelli.

  • I also think that Criss was a better lead guitar player, but you're not really being fair to Alex. This is by far Alex's worst performance ever; he was just unlucky that's the one show that got filmed. Have you watched Testament's lattest DVD? Alex RIPS! Plus, search in Youtube for Alex Skolnick Trio. He plays some mean guitar in his jazz project. Alex is an EXCELLENT lead guitar player... Too bad he wasn't long in Savatage for us to hear that side from him.

  • I can't say I am a fan of Testatment, but I do for sure respect the guy's skills. All I'm saying is people want to hear for Criss-era songs, they want Criss-era solos. I suppose I'm taking this (a little too far) a bit seriously for not doing the intro solo correct, but I'm just stating my opinion on the Chris/Alex replacment.

  • alex had just left testament and he didnt want to be a shredder anymore even on the ritual his solos were so different from the other albums so he changed criss`s solos

  • Actually, his solo's aren't awful, but there definately not up to Alex Scholnick standard. Better than Kirk Hammet or Slash anyday.

  • Comment removed

  • Zak Stevens or Jon Oliva - doesn´t matter who of them is on vocals, both are incredible strong voices... a lottof bands would be happy to have at least one perfect singer like this...

  • i like it

    savatage rules

  • no doubt !!!! its like is anyone in this band an original member, i mean they sound good but.....................

  • Could anyone direct me to a video with Criss playing this one, and preferably with Criss's brother singing?

  • METAL!!!!!!!!!

  • I also like how Jon is a fellow lefty :P

  • Classic!!!

    good times!

  • at 4:22 those bass hits are kick ass!!

  • I remember when this band came about... hell yeahh gigga gig

  • In this video you can see the reason why Chris Caffery asked Alex Skolnik to leave and let him back in the band. Because Alex has a very different style, he kept on changing Criss Oliva's solos. Caffery felt the urge to keep all of that untouched, as a tribute to his missing friend.

  • ahhh i fucking love Al Pitrelli

  • Awesome, Jon's on rhythm guitar. I wish these guys were still together. If only Criss were still around. Wouldn't it be even cooler if Criss, Chris and Alex were all playing at once? I can only imagine that.

  • it would be great. i agree. but i guess sometimes things are too good to be true. but it would be great to see all three of them at the same time playing for savatage ans TSO!

  • Imagine what criss would bring to TSO, it would be amazing
