I've been teaching English in the Czech Republic part time for more than 6 years for three people, borrow and lend are still as perplexing today as they were when I first started, as are say me and tell me.
@SvalbardJanMayen1976 Hi, Svalbard! Your comment was very interesting. I am brazilian, many people don't know we are native speakers of Portuguese (NOT spanish!!). In portuguese we have only one way to pronounce and 4 different ways to write "why / because"... in this case, English presents an advantage. I am studying in University Languages to become an English Teacher. Take care.
The teacher means well. There probably wasn't much time for real academic training. Speaking English well enough is always appreciated. Every English speaker has his own accent and colloquialism. I suppose combat English needs only to be as accurate as a grenade. Close enough does the job. Intel English would have to be more surgically accurate. The further the distance of the datum, the tighter the translation. That's just my 2 cents worth.
I agree-she's ok-just not connecting with them. I would've dropped that whole thing and just gone on to more simple stuff-the borrow-lend thing was a little too obtuse for them as brand new as they are to the language. Plus, imo, it was vital they learn stuff directly related to flight and survival only to start.
She's not a bitch...she's Anna Massey for goodness sake, saving a sentimental, overly homo-erotic love story...set in WW2. If only war was so lovely!!!
It may have helped if they knew what they were saying half the time!
