I hate how the internet turned every jackass into an expert critic. Just enjoy if what you see/hear speaks to you. If not, I am sure there is plenty of other stuff around that does.
If anyone is complaining about "cheating" when playing an instrument, there is no such thing. If you can record a piece of music, regardless of how it's done, if the music is enjoyed, you're guilty of nothing. The fact these people can arrange such a series of sounds into something structured like a good song is enough for me to appreciate them.
I've watched/listened to this probably a dozen or so times, as well as everything else I could find of all the greats, and let me say this: I believe, truly, that this is the best metal drumming video on YouTube. People could spend years studying what's going on here.
His trigger samples are actually pretty good, where they sound somewhat natural. A lot of times in other bands in just sounds like clicking and that can get really annoying.
I don't normally listen to this genre, but I can tell you that this is incredible. Really awesome musicianship and playing. Great touch too! Phenomenal shops.
Jamie, you're brilliant, brother. I could watch this all day. Makes me so proud to be a metalhead. What musicianship. Any questioning your chops is not worthy of a response.
hey I just thought of something. go to a dance club and hook up all the lights and everything else to the drum patterns. that would be very insane and yet so sick!!!!
Love how its not all blastbeats and double-bass, but a lot of slow, emotional drumming to :) Probably my favourite drums on any album so far... Nice job!
damn, just listening to the album i knew his play was ridiculous, but watching this just stepped it up a whole nother level. i really need more footage, please, ill do anything
Meh at this laical trigger conversations. Trigger is only altering the sounds of the drums according to inserted samples (not arbitrary)+balances the drum sounds, so you hear the force/loudness of the drum as always on the same level/volume. It doesn't have anything to do with the tempo/bps in which drums are played - that is a common spread myth.
@DecadentFilms Seconded. In fact, a lot of triggers are set up for volume sensitivity. Either way, you still have to "play" everything, therefor it's not cheating. Not at all.
4:50-5:15 is my favorite. "Omens" is fuckin dope!
My favorite thing about this band is that every song on these last 2 albums is over 5 minutes. That shows depth and passion not only to the writing process, but also to have taken to the time to practice to become THAT good... There is really no reason for a negative comment. I have made respect for you.
I love origin, but compare this video to a longstreth vid, and you will see that this guy is just as ( and I think more) talented but gets bar

trigger debates are redundant. dont bash someones preferences. you're entitled to disagree but its as unnesessary as some retard saying, hey chain drive pedals suck or you're gay cuz you use a 10 inch snare. no one would say that normally so why go through trouble to bash something so insignificant. i dont use triggers but the few times i did i enjoyed it. i wont ever switch from a natural sound but its nice when you have clear bass drum notes sticking out in the mix
amazing, somewhat jazz-like arrangements as far as the playing but perfectly interpreted for the music it calls for. and stop making the same big deal over triggers ppl. its a preference and serves beneficial purposes to some. a device like that cant make someone better or cheat. along with other upsides. i dont use them but i have and i had no complaints. i was happy the crowd could distintly hear clear bass drum hits. trigger debates are unnecessary.
how do you remeber every note for such complex patterns? its mind blowing. in a way i see how its comparable to jazz, seeing how you approach the drums with this free flowing type arrangements that still let the music breathe and give it the perfect amount of "ooh and ahhh"...... simply amazing stuff. and triggers are nothing worth debating and arguing over. they serve purposes and who are you to make it a petty, narrow minded, assumption driven argument to bash someones preferences.
Incredible sense of flow and feel for the music, intricate and interesting without drawing too much attention... this man has serious style. Hearing that cymbal work makes me instantly think of Jamie St. and that's a huge feat for any drummer, let alone one working within the modern kids-are-born-knowing-how-to-blast world of extreme metal.

@ReeceRAWR That's the beauty of Ulcerate's latest album. The guitars are playing what is essentially a death metal variation of ambient music with the drums supplying extreme technicality with the control and emotion of a jazz player.
i think there are some bored people watching this video. singles aren't technical, this band is sweet and so is the drummer. and for the guy that hates watching metal drummers... go watch gavin harrison or chris coleman. don't watch metal drummers when you hate'em. get a clue.
@perfectdarkzero9 I would never claim to be able to 'break jazz players into pieces', or any other style for that matter. I'm playing in and around the genre conventions, just like any other style of music.
Quick double bass and blast beats have validity for this style of music, and very little else - and I wouldn't want it any other way. It's not meant to be amusing, or jaw-dropping, and most certainly not 'technical' - it's just a snippet of clips for people that seem to like what we do.
@nonhasthisusername I use Evans heads - snare batter is Genera HD Dry, swear by them! Snare is PDP LXE, Kurillian Birch finish, maple shell. Cheers // J

@JamieUlcerate Personally I love the way you handle this genre. I'm so very picky about metal and the drummers affiliated. I love the extreme sides of the genre (Beneath the massacre, Necrophagist...ULCERATE) and I have to say, it's a mixture of your drumming and the way the other instruments and vocals play off of it that really make your band one that I could listen to for days on end. Don't ever stop doing what you're doing.
@JamieUlcerate Typical amazing drummer downplaying his talents. Seriously though, you have a sick style and I appreciate the modesty and the work it must have taken to make this awesome music. Been listening to the cd's for about a couple weeks now and can't get enough! Also your right full sleeve is really sick looking
@JamieUlcerate well you should claim... you fuckin destroy fuckin jazz bullshit.... you wont say it , so I will. 03:47 - 04:06 is absolute pure fuckin retardation badass dude makes me want to fuckin kill someone and eat some acid at same time
@perfectdarkzero9 You mean drummers that are fast, creative, soild, and play what fits the music they are playing? I guess that says more about you then drummers like this.
@RedOnChrome Being fast is one thing, but blast beats aren't technical what so ever. Those little fills that he does are also not very technical. I wouldn't necessarily say it matches the music as best as it could either. Solid yeah maybe because it's the same shit over and over again. Metal drumming is just not a style I care for. Not to mention they are all obsessed with double bass. In which case, anyone can move their feet back and forth.
@perfectdarkzero9 Haha ok so let's see a video of you doing double bass a that speed or whatsoever. Metal is not necessarily the most technical thing if you play simple, but see some of the most technical metal drummers such as Derek Roddy, George Kollias, Hannes Grossmann, etc etc that are as technical as the jazzers out there... plus they would break them into pieces =)
as Roddy said : "we always talk about versatility for metal drummers, but what about other musicians ?"
@sexypoulpe When I watch these drummers all I see is blast beats, quick simple fills, and some effect cymbals thrown in. It fits the music they play, sure I guess, I just don't think it's that amusing to watch or listen to. If you've heard one, you've heard them all. I'm not so sure they could break jazz players into pieces either, or any other style player at that.
@perfectdarkzero9 Ok so what you're saying is that you don't like to listen to metal music... so WTF are you doing here idiot ?!
Don't comme here and criticize just because you can't even understand what he's doing (maybe too fast for you) and go back listen to music you enjoy... moron
@perfectdarkzero9 I didnt say blasts beats are technical, neither his fills, its you who are obsessed about technicality. He blast and plays fills that accent the feeling the band is trying to get across, and i guess you dont get that feeling.Too bad. But, you come to a extreme death metal drumming video and complain about blast beats and double bass? Thats like going to a video of a blues drummer and complaining about him using shuffle beats. that says more about you than the drummer.
@RedOnChrome No shit it says more about me than the drummer. I said my opinion, way to point out the obvious. If you want to say that one more time go for it. I saw the video and said what I think about it. I play drums, I'm pretty sure I have the right to show my opinion for anothers work. I didn't say that he is bad at playing, I simply said I don't care for the style he plays, or the music at that.
@perfectdarkzero9 lol at this guy "Blast beats aren't technical" he obviously doesn't know shit about drumming then. If he did, he would appreciate it, even if its not his liking. He would know that Blast Beats are very technical, because you have to get the timing perfectly between the snare, hi hat and bass drum. You have to match them (not all the time mind you) but even matching all of them at the right pace and power is difficult. You know jazz uses blast beats right?
@perfectdarkzero9 And jazz is a very technical and skillful drumming style to achieve. And this guy is obviously technical with his playing, and timing to match the weird guitar tempo etc. And the "Obsessiveness" with the double bass is such a stupid statement to come out with. It fits the music, as metal is usually fast and you need another bass drum to keep up with the tempo sometimes. And again, it just fits the heavy music.
Respond to this video... Plus every one cant just "move their feet back and forth". Playing double bass is a very hard skill to do. You have to have stamina and endurance. You have to have incredible timing as well. Im just gonna tell you to do your research before making such ignorant comments. I respect your opinion, that its not for you. But if you were a half decent musician, you'd appreciate it, not slate it.
@Cannibalcorpse55 dude, playing drums for metal period is pure talent. your moving 4 different parts of your body and all separate ways. but what Jamie is doing are owns. just pure owns that no one can touch so far that I heard of.
@perfectdarkzero9 S'all right to dislike the metal drumming style...but maybe one day you will grow into the kind of musician that can appreciate ALL styles of drumming and be versatile! Then you can become a great musician =))
You may have a close minded opinion that "you see one metal drummer you've seen them all" right now but that just shows me you haven't actually listened to a lot of metal drummers...because if you did, you'd realize Jamie is one of the few doing something different.
You people have clearly never heard somebody use triggers as a cheating method. I'm not against triggers. You can have a clean bass drum sound without them though. You people is ignorant.
No. If you come see us live, you will notice that we use two mics in each kick drum. If you take those and use a standard compressor, then you should be able to get a trigger consistency with a natural drum sound."
Straight from the official AILD website under their FAQ link. +1 me
@gabe562 But you can make a hybrid sound of mics and triggers, a lot of drummers do it in order to recover some of the dynamics that are lost when you trigger the bass drums, also AILD is not a band to take a good example of playing extreme tempos with the double bass.
@gabe562 Awesome..but you seem to have ignored the "tempos over 230+" part :P
And besides, not every metal band has the equipment and time to set up mics, compress the sound, eq it etc. etc. at every show they play...these guys aren't rockstars!
Theres no point in arguing about this anyway haha.
@zachf914 Do what? What're you talking about? I never bad mouthed any drummer or any style in any of my comments. You must have read my comments wrong. I have nothing but the utmost respect for these guys.
Jamie is one of my fav drummers at the moment. Definitely in the top3 for me right now in metal.
@TheAnnihilator12 The only one I can think of right now is Steve Asheim of Deicide... There are others, but not many. Last time I saw him play there were no triggers and it was amazing!
i don't even think he's using triggers in this, except MAYBE kick. i'm so sick of the trigger conversations. i will say however that one the only popular drummers that i think "cheats" with triggers is hellhammer.
im so tired of all the noobs who go on here and say that triggers make you go faster, like he said, triggers dont help a drummer play faster or cleaner necessarily, they are a "sample" of a drum sound, that are usually used to give you better sound recording, or in live situations.
@gabe562 no he couldn't, no one could quoting George Kollias "If you ask me,i say triggers are MUCH more difficult to go with......." because everyone can hear you and you have to be spot on and clean
@detulid read the description LOL "Sound replacement for kick drums only, no quantisation."
@ilikeguns Thanks for having my back dude. These haters obviously don't know what they are talking about. It was simply a subjective question, never meant to be trolling or criticizing. It's just rare to hear somebody play that fast with a full stroke except for GK or DR etc...
@ilikeguns Triggers are purely for sound purposes only. Without them the bassdrums at this speed would sound like mud with no definition of hits. No one can audibly play these tempos, not even George or Derek.
But the important thing is is that all these drummers who are using triggers have to be clean and tight otherwise mistakes are easily heard. I don't know why people have a negative view on triggers or even feel the need to ask "could he play this without triggers?" Of course he could.
@gabe562 Triggers do not help a drummer play faster or cleaner... they simply amplify the sounds they are collecting from the drums being hit. ProTools can correct a drummer and his mistakes, but not just triggers.
@sickdrummerdotcom triggers don't really 'amplify' the sound, they are used as a complete sound replacement tool. When you hit a drum, the trigger plays a pre-recorded sound. It could be a keyboard note if you want. Essentially, triggers turns acoustic drums into electric ones.
@sickdrummerdotcom thanks Cap) but triggers are for lazy metal drummers, everyone can play with triggers! yeah! so where's the meaning of making beats here?) get ezdrummer - get the same)
@sickdrummerdotcom I was always under the impression that triggers completely replaced drum sounds. I saw Akira Jimbo play a kit that was entirely triggered; even the rims made unusual sounds. So, in a way, it is possible for triggers to assist a drummer with speed, at least. For example, his drums could be tightened really tightly so that it is easier to to play fast due to enhanced rebound from the tight head. This goes for toms and bass drum. Not that that is what this man did.
@gabe562 Is he using triggers ? Because I don't SEE them. He only use triggers in the kick drum. And triggers are just to make more clear a sound, especially when you play at high tempos. Even you had to play flawlessly, because with triggers a mistake can be heard more easily.
@gabe562 Triggers are actually just made to make every hit sound equal. Unless he has a module while recording, the only trigger is going to the computer recording him. Triggers are also very sensitive. Which means they pick up every hit that is made. And that means every hit! It is very noticable when one hit is made off time. So technically it is harder to play clean with triggers.
@lommalos Actually I'm a 23 year old Mechanical Engineer with a minor degree in acoustic engineering. I also did work under contract for the US military while earning my grad degree at MIT in ballistics. I have a hell of a lot of knowledge regarding electrical engineering and such so I am pretty sure I know what a trigger is. Now can you tell me the difference between voltage and current? Oh ya, it's learned. Not learnt.
@gabe562 You may know what they are, but you obviously haven't a clue how it affects a drummer's playing, because the triggers don't change how a guy plays any more than an effects pedal changes the guitarist.
Holy shit.

MarsHolst20 5 months ago
@JamieUlcerate Typical amazing drummer downplaying his talents. Seriously though, you have a sick style and I appreciate the modesty and the work it must have taken to make this awesome music. Been listening to the cd's for about a couple weeks now and can't get enough! Also your right full sleeve is really sick looking

I cannot stand drummers like this.
perfectdarkzero9 1 year ago
@perfectdarkzero9 You mean drummers that are fast, creative, soild, and play what fits the music they are playing? I guess that says more about you then drummers like this.
RedOnChrome 1 year ago
@RedOnChrome Being fast is one thing, but blast beats aren't technical what so ever. Those little fills that he does are also not very technical. I wouldn't necessarily say it matches the music as best as it could either. Solid yeah maybe because it's the same shit over and over again. Metal drumming is just not a style I care for. Not to mention they are all obsessed with double bass. In which case, anyone can move their feet back and forth.
perfectdarkzero9 1 year ago
@perfectdarkzero9 Haha ok so let's see a video of you doing double bass a that speed or whatsoever. Metal is not necessarily the most technical thing if you play simple, but see some of the most technical metal drummers such as Derek Roddy, George Kollias, Hannes Grossmann, etc etc that are as technical as the jazzers out there... plus they would break them into pieces =)
as Roddy said : "we always talk about versatility for metal drummers, but what about other musicians ?"
sexypoulpe 1 year ago
@sexypoulpe When I watch these drummers all I see is blast beats, quick simple fills, and some effect cymbals thrown in. It fits the music they play, sure I guess, I just don't think it's that amusing to watch or listen to. If you've heard one, you've heard them all. I'm not so sure they could break jazz players into pieces either, or any other style player at that.

@perfectdarkzero9 Ok so what you're saying is that you don't like to listen to metal music... so WTF are you doing here idiot ?!
Don't comme here and criticize just because you can't even understand what he's doing (maybe too fast for you) and go back listen to music you enjoy... moron
sexypoulpe 1 year ago
@perfectdarkzero9 I didnt say blasts beats are technical, neither his fills, its you who are obsessed about technicality. He blast and plays fills that accent the feeling the band is trying to get across, and i guess you dont get that feeling.Too bad. But, you come to a extreme death metal drumming video and complain about blast beats and double bass? Thats like going to a video of a blues drummer and complaining about him using shuffle beats. that says more about you than the drummer.
RedOnChrome 1 year ago 3
@RedOnChrome No shit it says more about me than the drummer. I said my opinion, way to point out the obvious. If you want to say that one more time go for it. I saw the video and said what I think about it. I play drums, I'm pretty sure I have the right to show my opinion for anothers work. I didn't say that he is bad at playing, I simply said I don't care for the style he plays, or the music at that.
perfectdarkzero9 1 year ago
@perfectdarkzero9 lol at this guy "Blast beats aren't technical" he obviously doesn't know shit about drumming then. If he did, he would appreciate it, even if its not his liking. He would know that Blast Beats are very technical, because you have to get the timing perfectly between the snare, hi hat and bass drum. You have to match them (not all the time mind you) but even matching all of them at the right pace and power is difficult. You know jazz uses blast beats right?
Cannibalcorpse55 11 months ago
@perfectdarkzero9 And jazz is a very technical and skillful drumming style to achieve. And this guy is obviously technical with his playing, and timing to match the weird guitar tempo etc. And the "Obsessiveness" with the double bass is such a stupid statement to come out with. It fits the music, as metal is usually fast and you need another bass drum to keep up with the tempo sometimes. And again, it just fits the heavy music.
Cannibalcorpse55 11 months ago 2
Respond to this video... Plus every one cant just "move their feet back and forth". Playing double bass is a very hard skill to do. You have to have stamina and endurance. You have to have incredible timing as well. Im just gonna tell you to do your research before making such ignorant comments. I respect your opinion, that its not for you. But if you were a half decent musician, you'd appreciate it, not slate it.
Cannibalcorpse55 11 months ago 11
@Cannibalcorpse55 dude, playing drums for metal period is pure talent. your moving 4 different parts of your body and all separate ways. but what Jamie is doing are owns. just pure owns that no one can touch so far that I heard of.
Terminal331 4 months ago

@gabe562 Uses triggers...
abacacus 1 year ago
@abacacus" Does Jordan use triggers?
No. If you come see us live, you will notice that we use two mics in each kick drum. If you take those and use a standard compressor, then you should be able to get a trigger consistency with a natural drum sound."
Straight from the official AILD website under their FAQ link. +1 me
gabe562 1 year ago
@gabe562 But you can make a hybrid sound of mics and triggers, a lot of drummers do it in order to recover some of the dynamics that are lost when you trigger the bass drums, also AILD is not a band to take a good example of playing extreme tempos with the double bass.
rapechristian 1 year ago
@gabe562 Heh. news to me. cool.
abacacus 1 year ago
@gabe562 Awesome..but you seem to have ignored the "tempos over 230+" part :P
And besides, not every metal band has the equipment and time to set up mics, compress the sound, eq it etc. etc. at every show they play...these guys aren't rockstars!
Theres no point in arguing about this anyway haha.

TheAnnihilator12 1 year ago
@TheAnnihilator12 The only one I can think of right now is Steve Asheim of Deicide... There are others, but not many. Last time I saw him play there were no triggers and it was amazing!
sickdrummerdotcom 1 year ago
i don't even think he's using triggers in this, except MAYBE kick. i'm so sick of the trigger conversations. i will say however that one the only popular drummers that i think "cheats" with triggers is hellhammer.
acleonard 1 year ago
im so tired of all the noobs who go on here and say that triggers make you go faster, like he said, triggers dont help a drummer play faster or cleaner necessarily, they are a "sample" of a drum sound, that are usually used to give you better sound recording, or in live situations.

gabe562 1 year ago
@gabe562 i'm about 90% sure you just watched him play without triggers.
detulid 1 year ago
@gabe562 Obviously he could, if these drums weren't mic'd/triggered it wouldn't affect how he played. What a fucking dumb question.
TrashedandGashed 1 year ago
@gabe562 no he couldn't, no one could quoting George Kollias "If you ask me,i say triggers are MUCH more difficult to go with......." because everyone can hear you and you have to be spot on and clean
@detulid read the description LOL "Sound replacement for kick drums only, no quantisation."
ilikeguns 1 year ago 2
@ilikeguns Thanks for having my back dude. These haters obviously don't know what they are talking about. It was simply a subjective question, never meant to be trolling or criticizing. It's just rare to hear somebody play that fast with a full stroke except for GK or DR etc...
gabe562 1 year ago
@ilikeguns Triggers are purely for sound purposes only. Without them the bassdrums at this speed would sound like mud with no definition of hits. No one can audibly play these tempos, not even George or Derek.
But the important thing is is that all these drummers who are using triggers have to be clean and tight otherwise mistakes are easily heard. I don't know why people have a negative view on triggers or even feel the need to ask "could he play this without triggers?" Of course he could.
TheAnnihilator12 1 year ago 3
@gabe562 Triggers do not help a drummer play faster or cleaner... they simply amplify the sounds they are collecting from the drums being hit. ProTools can correct a drummer and his mistakes, but not just triggers.
sickdrummerdotcom 1 year ago 52
@sickdrummerdotcom
no they make him better stupid! geez don't you read what's on youtube?
XTXcalVinXTX 1 year ago
@sickdrummerdotcom plus they amplify the mistakes (dead notes, etc). So instead you must think he would have been cleaner without triggers...
anyway incredible drummer : extra clean, fast and creative.
sexypoulpe 1 year ago
@sickdrummerdotcom triggers don't really 'amplify' the sound, they are used as a complete sound replacement tool. When you hit a drum, the trigger plays a pre-recorded sound. It could be a keyboard note if you want. Essentially, triggers turns acoustic drums into electric ones.
yellowmegavidz 1 year ago
@sickdrummerdotcom thanks Cap) but triggers are for lazy metal drummers, everyone can play with triggers! yeah! so where's the meaning of making beats here?) get ezdrummer - get the same)
unhalowedd 1 year ago
@sickdrummerdotcom I was always under the impression that triggers completely replaced drum sounds. I saw Akira Jimbo play a kit that was entirely triggered; even the rims made unusual sounds. So, in a way, it is possible for triggers to assist a drummer with speed, at least. For example, his drums could be tightened really tightly so that it is easier to to play fast due to enhanced rebound from the tight head. This goes for toms and bass drum. Not that that is what this man did.
inimicalODDITY 1 year ago
@sickdrummerdotcom
Triggers definitely help them go faster.
StoneMonkey1119 11 months ago
@gabe562 Is he using triggers ? Because I don't SEE them. He only use triggers in the kick drum. And triggers are just to make more clear a sound, especially when you play at high tempos. Even you had to play flawlessly, because with triggers a mistake can be heard more easily.

@gabe562 I wonder if you could play anything half as good as this guy
GetTheShovel 1 year ago
@gabe562 Of course he could. It would just sound different.
zgates 1 year ago
@gabe562 Triggers are actually just made to make every hit sound equal. Unless he has a module while recording, the only trigger is going to the computer recording him. Triggers are also very sensitive. Which means they pick up every hit that is made. And that means every hit! It is very noticable when one hit is made off time. So technically it is harder to play clean with triggers.
deathcore595 1 year ago
@gabe562 He very much can. Worked with him live several times when he used no triggers. Did not slow him at all.

@gabe562 you're a young asshole that just learnt a new word: "trigger".
lommalos 11 months ago
@lommalos Actually I'm a 23 year old Mechanical Engineer with a minor degree in acoustic engineering. I also did work under contract for the US military while earning my grad degree at MIT in ballistics. I have a hell of a lot of knowledge regarding electrical engineering and such so I am pretty sure I know what a trigger is. Now can you tell me the difference between voltage and current? Oh ya, it's learned. Not learnt.
gabe562 11 months ago
@gabe562 I don't mind your crappy life. And when you'll speak another language: let us know. Stupid arrogant american bastard.
lommalos 11 months ago
@gabe562 You may know what they are, but you obviously haven't a clue how it affects a drummer's playing, because the triggers don't change how a guy plays any more than an effects pedal changes the guitarist.
