John wanted a #1 hit single so bad he asked Elton John to collaborate & if they had a hit Lennon would join his friend onstage. Lennon played a bunch of songs on the piano & wasn't happy that Elton liked this one best (it was one he was least happy with) but Elton heard that sax, their combined vocals, the great lyrics & it went to #1 in the US. When Elton John played Madison Square Garden he brought a "special guest on stage" & they played Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
